Re: What does this shirt mean to you?

love the shirt....and I'm a huge hip hop head

Hip hop fans that get their panties in a bunch over the whole "hip hop is dead" thing are taking it way too personal. How hard is it to understand that the crap you hear on the radio all day now isn't even hip hop? That garbage should be classified as something totally different. Call it hip pop or whatever you want, but its not real hip hop music.

Thats all the shirt is saying.

I know you don't really want to get into that argument.....

Obviously it depends on the radio station and what they are playing....Soulja Boy is pure pop music though. I'm fine with Ludacris or 50 cent on the radio, but you have to draw the line somewhere. When the chances of me turning on the radio and hearing a "hip hop" song telling me how to dance in the lyrics are above 50%, something is dead wrong. Mainstream hip hop is dying....

don't take it so personally dude. I love hip hop music more than anyone I know. But it's a total embarrassment having to explain to people that just because I listen to rap doesn't mean I listen to the garbage music that is on the radio. People who have been hip hop music fans since the beginning now have to deal with all this mainstream dance pop music that is labeled as hip hop on the radio and that simply isn't fair. Start a new music category if you want to listen to that stuff.

Thats the best I can explain it

and that's a good explanation... it IS an embarrassment... to the point where some people won't give any hip-hop a chance... "A Game" by AZ on Undeniable... I put it on, and some kids immediately start trying to **** on what I listen to because the hook sounds like its eluding to another club-themed song that they catch a glimpse of on the radio.

AZ is as far from the "crap" that you can get. So it makes me sad that TOO MANY PEOPLE don't give it a chance... I mean, that will never change my perception of hip-hop and in the end does it all really matter? no, not at all... but then my shirt shouldn't either.

I'm a "NY Cat" and I have to say that all I listen to now is rap from the 80's and 90's w/ a few exceptions from the last 8 years. I'm not going to say hip hop is dead, b/c hip hop s the culture and rap is just one part of it.

Anyway, I've started to listen to more Jazz and things of that nature ...I just dont like whats out now a days

I don't like whats "out" either... but you should check out all the stuff that isn't on the radio... I mean I can't stress this statement enough, but if you really dig deep (and it's not hard to do, check the fans of underground rap thread here on OS), you'll find good/great rap, especially if you like the 80's and 90's... I'm confident to the point where I'd bet my life that you'd like it.

Also since you're a "NY" cat... you would love Boot Camp Clik!

So that's the line? If it's about dancing then it's not hip hop? That makes so much sense.

I'm just tired of the generalization... really, the genre could be defined by anyone... hell, if my next door neighbor decided to freestyle and record it and put it on the internet for others to hear... whether it's popular, crappy, or doesn't seem like hip-hop or not... that can be defined as hip-hop...

I'll just start answering like this...

I still don't get why you don't like Lupe as a rapper. Say what you want about the mans sense of fashion, or the lack thereof....or say what you want about people overrating him...there is no doubt that he is an excellent, creative rapper.

hmmm I disagree... I didn't enjoy "The Cool" like others I guess... I didn't enjoy it at all really. I also didn't like "Food and Liquor"... I wouldn't say they were bad albums... but they were ehhh to me... and none of the artists I've listed made "ehhh" albums or mixtapes on the reg. This is my opinion.

What didn't you like about either album? IMO, they were both artistically refreshing.

I don't have a problem with southern rap music.

I do have a problem with the Lil Wayne/Birdman/Fat Joe/Rick Ross/Jeezy/TI and a few others who can't go a single song without mentioning selling cocaine. There was a time when I thought it was cool, but now I can see how lame it is.
