Pusha called that stuff years ago on Trap or Die II with Jeezy. It's nothing new and I'm surprised folks on Social Media are acting like it is.

And Meek only looks dumb because he backtracked a few hours later basically instead of sticking with what he said.

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

It matters a lot to me because Drake is one of my favorite rappers out right now. The issue is I still don't really know what's going on. They named the guy, played the reference track, I've heard reference tracks for stuff like that before, Kendrick did one for Kanye on All Day. But I also don't really consider Kanye a great rapper so it doesn't affect him as much.

The problem with Drake is that if he doesn't write his own raps, then he's done. And it's specifically because he really hams up the best rapper out and no one can touch me thing. This isn't R&B, you don't go out there and rap other people's words and claim they're your own, it does matter in hip-hop because we judge guys on their skills. If someone wrote Best I Ever Had or Own It for Drake I wouldn't really care because those songs aren't coming at people. But if someone wrote 5AM in Toronto or as Meek said the R.I.C.O. verse or The Language, then yeah he's dead to me. Pretty much, no idea what to think without more information really. Imagine if it came out that he doesn't even write the personal **** like Too Much or You and the 6. All this said, I don't think anything comes of it. The guy is literally listed in the writing credits for the album, this isn't ghostwriting anyway.

"If he doesn't write his own raps, he's done.."

This statement couldn't be further from reality. Done to you? Maybe. But he's still Drake, and he's still going to sell.

And again, the guy is credited and Drake has made it clear before that he brings people in writing sessions with him to inspire and help craft verses. This happens in rap with literally every artist. Some just are too insecure to admit it. Anyone that legitimately has the expectation that all these top rappers are writing every single one of their bars on EVERY record, most likely haven't been around music that seriously. Especially at that level.

Speaking of "Too Much", there was an article/interview written about Sampha before that album dropped where he was literally in awe of Drake's ability to hear a melody/rhythm and craft something almost immediately. Said he was in awe of how talented he actually was, having never worked with him previously.

And again, this is ignoring the fact that Drake has written numerous hit records for countless other artists. Ironically enough, he wrote the record that Meek was featured on on Nicki's album lol As 40 said, no one should ever question this man's pen.

Yeah, that's all I meant. If he is going out saying he's the best rapper and he can't be touched but he's not even writing it, then yeah that's lame to me. I can't take him as seriously. It's kind of like how I feel about A-Rod in a lot of ways, he was the chosen one. Drake was supposed to be the greatest, but now we find out he's taking steroids.

Like I said, it depends on how much of his stuff is written by others.

And did he really on the Nicki Minaj, he isn't listed on any of Meek's featured songs on the Pink Print? I know he's written like Fall For Your Type but again, that's R&B. If he's writing other people's raps, I'd like to see that. I just want to know. I understand it's probably not important to other people, but it is to me.

            Spoiler

Spoilered for size. Don't ever check Wiki. Place is so unreliable when it comes to actual credits.

Names you can ignore there because of the sample in the beat are Cook, Brothers, Jantunen and Redman.

I checked iTunes, I bought the album and I guess they don't list all the writers on the actual album in the Composers section like I thought they did. He's not listed there for some reason.

Either way, even then he could've written the hook, who knows?

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

Meek was credited with writing the hook, via K Michelle, who was originally supposed to get the record. Hence the similarity in name between this record and her album "Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart".

                Drake wrote Nicki's verse.

Yeah I'm not too surprised at that either, I was reading a Reddit post about how he was talking to the girl that helped him write Connect, and it was a poet, and she was just basically texting him lines and whatnot. I would imagine at some point that he just has a phone full of lines that he thought of or heard and he puts them together at some point.

Meek specifically said he didn't write the R.I.C.O. verse. That's the kind of thing I don't want to hear. That's what I want proof of.

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

Yeah, there is rumor that that RICO track was originally for Drake and was supposed to be on IYRTITL, which is why he is saying "Views" at the beginning as a sort of an indication that it was on the way.

Miller is credited so I'm not sure why all of a sudden it is a surprise that he had a hand in the record. Again, did he write the hook, the verse? Who knows, could also be Meek embellishing because he felt spurned.

He did something to this extent to Wale before he went to jail because Wale wasn't promoting his album.

Budden made a great point. When people speak of Drake as a lyricist, and hold him in that regard, it's not because of a record like 10 Bands. And even then Drake still wrote the bridge which IMO is what makes the song and a whole second verse. Again, it doesn't effect my enjoyment of his product. Now if it comes out that he didn't write records like The Calm, Lust for Life, 9AM in Dallas etc, then I would be super upset.

If you are interested, this is a good listen. Starts at about the 7:10 mark:

Honestly couldn't care less about some mediocre lyricists complaining about who's writing whoever else's mediocre lyrics. They need to stop subtweeting each other and get in the booth if they really have something to say about lyrics.

I agree with Crooked that when he hears his favorite rappers don't write their own ****, he gets pissed off. I also agree with Budden about the 10 Bands specifically but I do think when people talk about Drake being a great rapper they bring up his flows and whatnot, but that's not really relevant.

And yeah, Meek obviously looked weak as soon as he apologized.

But it's more or less over.

This is basically the same stuff Jay went thru about 10 years ago I believe when Jimmy and Cam were trying to prove that he had a ghostwriter and back then, the Hov stans were hard at work to try and diffuse that, even though they really couldn't.
