Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

You just never know which Chance is gonna show up on a track: Chance the Pastor, Chance the Afterschool Special Host, finally back in his Chance the Rapper bag. The Free Nationals (Paak's band) put out a song with Kali Uchis and Mac Miller, it's good.

Benny this week, Gibbs next and Westside Gunn dropping 7/5.

There's been a lot of leaks lately. In the snippet era, too often the final product is a disappointment after you've had a 20 second clip on repeat for weeks, but Drake came through with Mask and a Cape (Money in the Grave) and Blame by Travis is perfect.

Plugs I Met came through, the features all killed, I need to go through Jadakiss's discography. I am content, could've used some darker beats, I want every Benny verse over the Fifty One instrumental but this will do.

The new Mach-Hommy is dope too.

This is already the best month so far off of 2 EP's and we get Gibbs tomorrow. Praise be.

They've done it again. The beat switch on Half Manne Half Cocaine, the beat on Massage Seats, the transition between the skit in Fake Names and Flat Tummy Tea (I love when the full album makes the singles sound better), the beat switch on Cataracts (second part sounds like something Dr Dre would've put on 2001), Black Thought, Yasiin Bey, Palmolive SOTY, three of the best deliveries in rap on the same track, almost didn't mind the Killer Mike didn't get a verse. 3 listens in, at least Half Mannne, Palmolive, Practice, Gat Damn, Education all going in my playlist, should be able to clear out the Fetti songs from last year, probably Cataracts too. Fake Names too, probably the whole thing tbh.

Info on Westside Gunn tape Friday, production from Alchemist, Madlib, Daringer, DJ Muggs, features from Raekwon, Benny, Conway, Mayhem Lauren.

Lost Tapes 2 from Nas coming July 19, production from Hit-Boy, Swizz Beats, Statik Selektah, Kanye, Alchemist, RZA, Pharrell, No ID, etc.

Dreamville dropping Revenge of the Dreamers 3 Friday. Not a fan of the Cozz/Reason song, but Costa Rica is great, reminds me of Bahamas from the Cozy Tapes. They made a documentary...This should be fun.

              Spoiler

Random Gibbs feature I missed last month on Wax On by Injury Reserve, dude can flow on anything.

Haven't listened to Dreamville yet. Forgot it dropped Friday and I wasn't around. It's queued up next.

Here's the music video for Ghostface's Conditioning:

Dreamville project is pretty good, lots of JID verses so that's dope. Cole needs to let Earthgang out of the Dreamville sweatshop and let them release their album already, I love Swivel. Could've used more Ari Lennox, and I wish the verses on 1993 were longer but not too many complaints. The Cole verses on Oh Wow and Sacrifices are great, it's going to be interesting to look at his legacy 20 years down the road. Hes really... about the culture for lack of a better way to put it, it's cool to see.

Ari stood out to me, too, on my first listen. Pretty good album on first take. Definitely some bangers and all around quality stuff. I'll probably end up pulling half of the tracks onto a playlist.

Still digging into Bandanas. Did Bey give a reason for dropping his Mos Def moniker?

Something about wanting to be looked at as a person as opposed to a product.

Unrelated, but my mom went to see Meth, Rae, Ghostface, and some others at the Scope (I know AZ was there) and said the show was great but Meth saw someone wearing a Knicks hat and said our owner sucks, they need to give up...not sure if she was serious or messing with me, but there is no escape.

Just saw on Desus & Mero, Deck and U-God crossed over, Masta Killa is the only real one left. Wu-Tang is canceled.

                            That is the worst feeling.

I'm gonna listen to it sometime this weekend, also have to get through the Lost Tapes (just the single actually, Nas is rapping over Dave Brubeck...bruh, this is incredible, am I going down an Al Jarreau rabbit hole...) and Blood Orange's tape. Exquire and the Lion King soundtrack too.

New dvsn songs and Elle Varner album outta nowhere. Maxo next week.

KRIT IZ HERE: Really solid album, liked almost all of the songs, minus the J Cole song and Blue Flame Ballet. Life in the Sun would be a SOTY candidate for me if the hook hadn't let it down so hard, first verse is one of my favorites on the whole project but that hook is meh. Mississippi is one of the best songs he's ever made IMO.

Perfect Ten: Mustard came through. I love this tape, might be the most fun release of the year. Opening sample flip to Nip, loved everything. Nav pronouncing baguettes like spaghetti, Future on Interstate 10, Roddy Rich on top of another sample flip, Mustard recognizing the angelic quality in Thug's crooning... Just perfect.

Video for Distance by Beast Coast is out and worth watching if only for the dope throwback Mighty Ducks jersey and Bernard King jersey sightings. And the song of course.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to throw down money for Krit's LP. I was washing the car this past Saturday morning with KRIT IS HERE, Bandana, and Revenge of the Dreamers. Was a solid morning.

I'm gonna stretch on this, but I'm a little disappointed that my favorite Krit tracks are all the ones he released previously (Energy, Learned from Texas, Krit Here). Still, Mississippi doesn't **** around and Addiction is pretty damn solid. The whole album is pretty killer, though. Nothing sticks out as sounding weak. Not sure how it measures up to his previous albums, but I'm not worried about that yet. Plus, how the **** do you measure against Cadillactica and 4eva is a Mighty Long Time?

Starting to pick some songs out on the new Dreamers - Down Bad, Swivel (fire), Wells Fargo, Sleep Deprived/Self Love, and 1993.

It's been a great month of rap after a quiet Spring.
