First thought that came to my mind is Cube is entering Ice T territory, where he's an actor that used to rap. I don't even know if anyone now cares to go back and listen to his stuff, I've personally never heard an Ice T song. But I was never big on West Coast stuff to begin with.

I feel like he's (attempted) to reclaim himself in the last couple of years or so. He was firmly in that Ice T camp when he was doing all those family movies.
Speaking of. A co-worker (23 years old) came through the breakroom a couple weeks ago and asked if I knew Will Smith made music before he became an actor. LOL.

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread
Talk about dated, I can't even imagine a rapper coming out with a parent's just don't understand today outside of Kids Bop or some weird Al parody.
Finally listened to Ross's album, nothing stands out so this is another Drake appreciation post. I like the luxury rap angle, but it's odd seeing Ross go all in this way when some of his best songs were BMF and Push It, stuff like that.
Anyway, Drake said "Trust when I say I'm never on the **** they assuming I'm on, Tales about me are like carridos in Culiacon, Sashimi from Saito you know that man 2 Michelin star, Postcard from Grace Bay, send him my distant regards" and I suddenly feel the need to find a second job, I was almost too poor to understand those bars. He then goes full Drake with "meaning he'll blast for me like putting the 6 with the God" lol.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread
It’s the stuff that’s coming out over the last 10 years or so whose standing will change over time.
Assuming that’s what you were asking.#RespectTheCultureComment

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread
To your other point it feels weird watching albums you grew up and remember as being "under the radar" now being acclaimed albums and must haves for their time period. Never thought I would ever see the name Viktor Vaughn or Deltron 3030 again outside of the early 2000s.
Speaking of which. Are there any current/semi-recent albums or artists donning "alter egos" and ****? It seemed like there was a bunch of those guys running around 15-20 years ago.

There almost definitely are, but just like 15-20 years ago, I have no idea who they are.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread
The one that comes to mind immediately is MF Doom and all his monikers. I believe Madlib and Kool Keith released albums under different aliases around the same time Doom was building steam. Not sure if I would throw in Handsome Boy Modeling School, though I would certainly consider them a high-concept duo. I know there are some other rappers who tend to rap from different "personalities" (like Eminem/Slim Shady), but nothing comes to mind as far as full albums dedicated to that specific alter-ego.
Just another one of the cooler aspects of the genre to me - especially when they flesh out the concept.

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread
To an extent I suppose, but I was mainly thinking about albums that are already considered masterpieces and major influences of the genre.

That album is almost 25 years old and is still a classic to this day. I think that’s how it’ll be for a lot of those 90’s Albums since that’s considered the Golden Age of Hip Hop#RespectTheCultureComment

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread
Another hurdle is streaming and trying to keep things relevant and in circulation. De La Soul won't let their albums go up on streaming services until Tommy Boy gives them back their masters. I wonder how many other older artists are dealing with similar issues. Or how much of the best music of the 2000s will get lost because mixtape samples can't get cleared?
I just noticed Reasonable Doubt isn't on Apple Music. I'm guessing it's a Tidal exclusive... It's going to be interesting to see how everything plays out with the changes in the music landscape.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Yeah, I don't see Jay letting his library stream on other services until Tidal goes under. If that happens.

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread
Weird. Spotify has nothing from him other than guest spots on other albums.
Speaking of Jay (didn't really want to bring this up in the NFL thread for: reasons), Jemele Hill put out an article through The Atlantic with her thoughts on the pairing of Roc Nation and the NFL. Pretty good read.

Anybody still **** with Murs? I haven't really listened to him since Murs for President, but have been seeing some good chatter around his new records.
