Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread
Yeah.
I've said this already but Gold Roses man...it's climbing the charts as one of my favorite Drake songs (even being a Ross song). Instrumental is butter. While in Drake appreciation mode, it's worth mentioning people should check out Caught Up by Majid Jordan if they haven't already, too smooth, love those dudes.
New Denzel Slowthai is in contention for noisiest song, and song most necessary to play at unreasonable volume levels, it's just loud.
Speaking of loud songs, walking around campus the last couple of weeks and seeing how oblivious people are to what's going on around them, I'm bringing back this classic and playing it at top volume wherever I go:

Should be warning enough, if they haven't moved by the time I get there, activate Brandon Jacobs/Ron Dayne mode.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Oblivious to their immediate surroundings or the world at large?

Their immediate surroundings. I'm not trying to send a message with the lyrics, I just need something that when played loud can be heard like a proximity sensor.

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread
He's probably just taking a break for a while, it's a good feature to go out on.
Skyzoo and Pete Rock go together like lamb and tuna fish, no surprise with them both being as good as they are but this is a near perfect marriage. I don't know if I'm overrating it right now because I listened to it immediately after Nastradamus but it's looking like an AOTY contender for me. Carry the Tradition is magic.
Thoughts on Nas through Stillmatic
Spoiler
Illmatic obviously is the perfect hip-hop album, I'd heard it a hundred times but it never gets old. Life's A Bitch is my favorite song on there, maybe my favorite Nas song overall. Going to It Was Written, I thought it was almost as good but Black Girl Lost hurt it for me. The Message is another one of my favorite songs of his, and I was racking my brain trying to figure out where I've heard the beat so recently before I realized it was the same Sting sample as that ****ing Juice WRLD song lol. Take It In Blood, IGYP, Affirmative Action, Shootouts, there's an album just as good as Illmatic in here, just with a very different sound.
I did not like I Am. The funny thing is coming off the last two, I was obviously excited, and one of my only gripes with Illmatic and IWW are the intros. The intro of I Am sampling all his old stuff, I thought was pretty dope, and had me excited for more additions to the catalog. Starts off dope with NY State of Mind II, I don't know if I like Hate Me Now or I've just heard it a million times but it is what it is, I liked Small World...now we start getting in trouble. I see Scarface, the song starts playing, the beat is ok, Scarface starts it off well, Nas comes in like Nas...but that hook just killed it for me. Not even that it's so bad (it is), but the first verse is half Scarface, half Nas, then a hook. You're thinking it'll be the same, but no, the next verse is just Scarface, then a hook. Then Nas, then a hook. That trash hook 3 times for no reason, not gonna be able to do it. I didn't really like the hook on Ghetto Prisoners either but I did like the verses enough to override it. It's funny because I'm so happy to hear songs with 3 verses and so disappointed having to hear these hooks so many times. Life Is What You Make It is good, Nas Is Like is great, Undying Love is great. Illmatic got every song given 5 stars basically, only thing that didn't is the intro. IWW only real song I didn't like was Black Girl Lost. Out of 15 songs on I Am, we're down to 7 songs I gave 5 stars. In steps Nastradamus...
I'm just going to say I didn't like it. 3 songs out of 14 I liked. Come Get Me, Last Words, and Family. I moved on to re-listening to 1999 by Joey and Retropolitan. But I knew Stillmatic was good so I came back. The worst part of this album is the cover, I can't believe this is the legit cover for this album. With Stillmatic we finally get a legit song intro and it gets 5 stars. Ether is Ether, the Sopranos fan in me immediately vaults Got Ur Self A Gun into my Nas top 10, You're Da Man is great, Rewind is crazy, I've always loved One Mic, the way he amps on up the first 2 verses and then comes down for the third one always is a favorite of mine.
I was reading a Reddit thread on what happened to the original I Am, how it was supposed to be a double disc, got leaked, and the label gutted it, really a shame. There's another one that has a bunch of his loosies/features, a lot of stuff that never made albums. As a Wayne fan, I gained great respect for his unofficial release catalog even though I don't have the energy to track it down.
Favorite songs (in no order): NY State of Mind 1 & 2, Life's A Bitch, The Message, Take It In Blood, Affirmative Action, Shootouts, Nas Is Like, Undying Love, Got Ur Self A Gun, Rewind, One Mic.

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread
Discovered Brooklyn Drill through this Pop Smoke "Welcome to the Party" song, the song isn't great but the beat is good, the movement has some hard **** in it. I thought drill died when it wen to the UK but here we are.

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread
Friendship ended with Chicago. Now Brooklyn is my new best friend. Sucks that I've missed most of the movement but on the bright side it means I can just go straight to the best stuff. Between Skyzoo and this drill I've been listening to nothing but Brooklyn this week, Nets still suck though.
Pop Smoke - Flexin (Welcome to the Party is his breakout, listen to PTSD off his new tape, sounds like he's doing a 50 impression)

And a response to that, this is my favorite one, this is probably the hardest beat I've ever heard in my entire life, producer's from London, is that an accordion? Most evil beat I've ever heard, I need it injected into my veins.

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread
DaBaby's album broke up Brooklyn Week, it was not worth it. His production is so boring to me, even worse coming off of drill. A lot of drill beats have a build up in the beginning of the song which I love and the Undertaker bell, beautiful, I could listen to Suburban on repeat forever. The let down got me back in to finish Nas.

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread
The new Danny Brown is different than his other albums but I still loved it. Theme Song, Savage Nomad, whole thing honestly, dope top to bottom. New Robert Glasper album has Mick Jenkins and a lot of Cordae on it, All I Do (Sir's voice is unreal), the usual Yasiin Bey feature, it made me go back and check out the Black Radios again and I remember this man recreated Cherish the Day with Lalah Hathaway, truly a man of taste. Nothing touches the original obviously, but that first "You're ruling the way that I move" hits with 90% of the feeling that Sade's does and that's all any normal human can hope to achieve. New Summer Walker album is great too, all the samples make it sound like a woman's version of one of the Chixtapes Tory Lanez made. Body, I'll Kill You with Jhene, Come Thru with Usher, great all the way through.
Went through Tupac's discography, and then Biggie. I swear I thought Tupac had more than 5 albums. I feel like Me Against the World, All Eyez, and The Don Killuminati are all on the same tier but Me Against the World is probably my favorite, surprising for a double album. That first disc is S tier, but a 2 hour album is too much. Ready to Die is better than all of them, Gimme the Loot to Machine Gun Funk to Ready to Die is unfair. It made me wonder who I'd give the most S tier albums to, Nas 1, Biggie 1, Tupac none, Kendrick already has 2...I'm gonna go through Jay-Z's stuff when I can get my computer back up.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it
