Reminds me more of Heavy D (which is not bad)

second coming of Pun would be pun's son as far as flow.

Hi, guys. Let me first apologize for sounding like a noob. I've never posted here before because the only Hip Hop/Rap I've ever listened to has been, pretty much, Eminem and Empire State of Mind. Along with everything that has been in all my basketball and football video games. So, I figure this is the perfect place for me to ask questions.

At an auction today, I won a box of LPs for $11. In that box was LL Cool J's Bigger and Deffer, EPMD's Strictly Business, and Run-D.M.C.'s Raising Hell.

When looking these up, I noticed that they seem to be pretty huge albums in the history of hip hop/rap. I mean, I know two songs on Raising Hell, so that's a pretty good sign of how big this album is.

What do you guys think of them? Is there anything I need to know before I listen to them? What else should I look for or listen to after these albums?

Anything from that time period, which is considered by many to be the "Golden Era" of rap, in the 1980's from those three plus Big Daddy Kane, Eric B. & Rakim, Dougie E. Fresh & Slick Rick, the Beastie Boys, N.W.A, Boogie Down Productions/KRS - One, Marly Mar/the Juice Crew, the Geto Boys and many more is a good starting point. Rappin music has a pretty deep history even for a art form that is less than 45 years old.

The 1990's brought a lot more diversity as far as different regions and sounds. I'll just list a few people like a Tribe Called Quest, Bone Thugs - And - Harmony, Wu-Tang Clan, Outkast, Goodie Mob, UGK, 8Ball & MJG, Camp Lo, Black Moon, Smiff-N-Wessun, Black Star (note: these are only groups/duos that I've named) and many, many more.

This current time period isn't as strong overall (lack of great groups/duos is a
big reason why) but individually speaking you have a lot of quality stuff. My three personal favorites are Big K.R.I.T., Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole. Drake is probably the biggest artist right now and if you can get passed all the singing he's pretty good.

Thats the start of hip hop for me. Definitely check out some other great 80s albums like NWA Straight outta compton of course, Public Enemy - It take a nation to hold us back, EVERYTHING that Eric B. and Rakim did. Gangstarr, Kool G Rap, Ghetto Boys (Scarface start) started coming out too. A lot of fire at the end of the 80's and leads to the 90's.

One of my favorite albums of all time: De La Soul -3 feet high and rising.

Everything J-Posse said and also someone who didn't get too much love in the 80's was Too $hort. He was short but his bboy stance was hard.

80's was just straight up fun and made you dance. It was meant to break dance/pop to which is missed today's hip hop. Its pretty dope you're starting almost at the roots of hip hop where I wish most people would at some point listen to.

I got to agree. I never really liked The Game but this album goes.

...I did like The Documentary 1 though.

I think this was released a few days ago; I don't know much about Raury but I saw him on Stephen Colbert and loved his performance so I've been keeping tabs on the album he has coming out in a few days. Anyways, here's his new song with Big K.R.I.T. Pretty good IMO.
