For those looking to educated themselves on Bobby Ray (not his commercial side, he's so much better than Nothin On You), some songs to listen to:
I'll Be In The Sky - This song is what introduced me to Bobby Ray. A little over a year ago, I was over at a friend's house while he had MTV2 playing in the background. I never watch MTV2 and 95% of rap videos are just garbage to me. So I saw a video for I'll Be In The Sky and thought "who the hell is this clown?" then I heard the stuff he was saying and was very impressed. Thus I began my research.
Auto-Tune - This really isn't an official song. It's more of a joke track where he pokes fun at this beloved form of "art". He even spits a mock verse of someone familiar. I absolutely HATE Auto-Tune. So when I heard this song, I knew I was gonna like this guy.
Generation Lost - I'll Be In The Sky and Auto-Tune is was got me to listen to Bobby Ray. Generation is what put him at #2 on my favorite rapper list. He has a line in this song talking about commercial rap that made me cream my jeans. I screamed that **** at the top of my lungs when I saw him at Steppin' Lasers (going again in two weeks ^_^).
Cloud 9 - Not a particular favorite of mine, but some of you may like it. If I'm not mistaken, this is the song that made T.I. want to sign him to Grand Hustle.
For those that are curious, Lupe is #1 of course. J. Cole has a slight lead over Consequence for 3rd. And it's so weird but everyone else in All City Chess Club besides Charles Hamilton (ehhh), Cool Kids (no thanks) and Diggy (mad potential) are all rolling around in my second tier of rappers I like.
Some other songs I'd recommend are Put Me On, Room 34, Lonely People, Better Off Alone.
For those unaware, Bobby Ray also sings. Ghost in the Machine is one my favorite songs. Other good songs where he sings are Lovelier Than You (I have not found a studio version of this song, seems that he just performs it live) and No Mans Land.
Bobby Ray is one versatile cat which is one of the reasons why he's one of my favorites. He has serious songs that tell stories like Better Off Alone. He has club bangers like Bet I. He has those silly fun songs like Wait Your Turn. And he has ballads like Lovelier Than You.
I've been a B.o.B fan since early 2009 and it's nice to see him get some exposure. I just hope that this transfer over to the mainstream doesn't compromise his talent. Who knows? All we can do is enjoy was he has now and hope it continues.
