Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

Downloaded the leaks of Fan of A Fan and Dark Sky Paradise albums. If any of you are on the fence of buying either, I suggest you do!

If I only had the funds for one album, I'd pick Fan of A Fan. Good stuff.

Heard this earlier, he really went at Amber Rose with that one man. I admit I was like:

Still though, it's funny to me to see him try to big up Kim like she's on this whole other level over Amber. Like Kim is class and Amber is trash or something? Outside of the money and what not, how different are they? If he needed 30 showers after Amber, how many showers did Kim need after Ray J desecrated her for all to see?
      PS: You guys are great.

Lol @ that review. I hate Youtube critics more than I hate Youtube comedians.

Drake can't do anything right really. If he sings too much on a record, he's soft. If he raps too much, he's not being Drake and trying to hard to be "the tough guy".

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

So it's been a week now and If You're Reading This It's Too Late has been on repeat since it dropped. There's maybe 2 songs I don't care for (Company and You and the 6 -- still might grow on me though). I almost slept on Jungle but that and Legend are probably my two favorite songs to this point. Also gotta love Know Yourself because who doesn't love shouting "I WAS RUNNING THROUGH THE SIX WITH MY WOES!"?

Have to say it's getting harder and harder to deny Drake's place in the game now. It's pretty wild that Wheelchair Jimmy can come out of the blue and drop a gold album with the only press being some Twitter rumors before release. And Views From The 6 is still coming out later this year. If IYRTITL is any indication, that's just going to further cement Drake at the top.

Also, listened to the new Big Sean album today. It's okay. A hell of a lot better than Hall of Fame, that's for sure. Aside from the singles with Blessings and IDFWU, there's a couple standouts like All Your Fault, One Man Can Change The World, and the Outro track has an awesome Kanye beat attached to it. Overall it's listenable but I don't think it has much staying power compared to 2014 Forest Hills Drive and If You're Reading This It's Too Late.

Possible Kendrick Lamar diss incoming from Big Sean. This guy's about to get got if he really wants it with K. Dot.

Regardless, this is one of the better Sean tracks you'll hear from him.

Not a fan of the new Drake album personally, listened through a few times but really only like You and the 6 and 6pm in New York. Still excited to see him live here in Sydney tomorrow, just home he doesn't perform too much from this joint.

Sean track is cool until he does that fast rapping **** at the end and sounds off beat. Just stahp that Sean, stahp.

I hate when he goes off-beat like that. I always think about how Big Ghost described it as him trying to be like Neo in The Matrix dodging bullets or something like that.

The thing with Sean is, he's got some gems and he's capable of holding his own when he's collaborating with other big time rappers (Clique, Control, Mercy, Burn, B-Boy, etc). It's just that it's more rare for that Sean to come out rather than the one dropping a bunch of corny *** lines and metaphors and just overall uninteresting ****. Guys like Cole and Drake catch a lot of heat for some of the corny lines they've let go, but for some reason it seems like Sean gets somewhat of a pass even though IMO he's the worst offender, almost on a past-his-prime Lil Wayne level at times.

Don't get me wrong, like I said earlier, Dark Sky Paradise is a decent album and much better than Hall of Fame was (which might not be saying a whole lot), but I've already deleted about 4-5 songs off the deluxe version after a few more listens.

Overall he's improved and his quality of his work has gone up. I personally hold him in a higher regard than I did a year or two ago. I just don't think he's going to improve too much more from here because I don't think he has very much to add to his lyrical content.

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

In a letter penned by VC Mark Suster explaining the head-turning week he's had at Upfront Ventures in Los Angeles, he explains the presence of a new face around the office: Chamillionaire. The same Chamillionaire who was showing us how to get our respective shines on not a decade ago. But if Kanye has taught us anything, it's that we can find success in multiple creative outlets. In the past five years or so, Cham has been quietly but actively involved in the tech startup scene, from speaking on social media engagement in the music industry to hanging out with Y Combinator associates.

He's also been making some investments himself. He was one of the earliest investors in Maker Studios, an online video network founded in 2009 and sold to Disney for $500 million last year. The firm he's currently hanging with and advising, Upfront Ventures, has a vast portfolio that includes some acquired startups such as Bill Me Later (Rick Ross may or may not have been referring to this method of monetary transaction on his verse for Nicki Minaj's "I Am Your Leader"). Suffice it to say that Chamillionaire has transcended the days when he explained on YouTube how Michael Jordan sonned him, or maybe that was just an early example of his Internet savvy and ability to manipulate viral stories and plant social media engagement. At any rate, in a world in which Internet entrepreneurs like Ben Horowitz make business decisions through the inspiration of rap songs, it's not surprising to see that we now have rappers getting their own piece of the pie.
Always good to see a guy make a mark outside of music after the fame is gone.

Almost forgot about Chamillionaire lol. That Sound of Revenge album was played heavily by me when it released. I still have it actually. I think might go back and give it another listen soon and see how its aged.
