So, Beautiful Life, War Against Love, Who Are You and It Never Ends makes Lost Tapes 2 absolutely worth it. Not as consistently great as the original, but damn it if Nas' voice and flow can't carry him until eternity...

I thought of that when I was courtside at the Melo game"

So a few years ago then.

Tierra Whack on the Lion King soundtrack, you love to see it. 3 songs in and I think the soundtrack already has more reason to exist than the movie.

The only dude from the 'YBN' "crew" I'm actually checking for. His 1st single with Chance is really, really dope.

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

I like Cordae but I could see him getting lost in the sauce if this album doesn't show me something. The YBN name did him well, I'm not sure he's really a unique enough rapper to have stood out outside of being the lyrical one in their crew. Always excited for a Push feature, definitely should've gotten a Cole verse on there.

Lost Tapes 2: I like it better than Nasir, Nas is Nas, you know what to expect at this point. My favorites were Lost Freestyle, Jarreau of Rap, and Highly Favored.

Brandon Banks: Maxo needs to get back to the weirder beats he was going over on Maxo187, his rap style was the same, but the variety was in the instrumentals. Everything blends together when he's on more traditional trap beats. Meet Again, Still, and 3 AM with Q are still good.

Beyonce really pulled Kendrick outta the cave for 2 minutes smh. I'm also torn because I never like when albums have skits but at least they had the courtesy to separate them from the songs so you don't have to listen to Simba every time. Pretty decent, great instrumentals. Love all the songs with my people, Tierra Whack, 070 Shake, and Pharrell so we're good.

Baby by Lil Baby and DaBaby is too stuck in my head and I don't even care for DaBaby. I also need Shotta Flow 3 by NLE Choppa on Apple Music so I can disturb my neighbors.

Chance's "debut" supposed to come out on Friday. No idea what to expect but after dropping his last project as an Apple Music exclusive and marketing it as a mixtape, I'm curious to see what's so different that this is an album vs another mixtape.

After one listen, the thing that stands out most on the Cordae album is his songwriting. He's not suffering from the "lyricist can't make a decent hook/chooses terrible beats" affliction, although he's more of a catchy lyrical guy than a wordsmith or anything. Shows a lot of versatility with his singing as well. Only song I didn't care for was the Meek one but that's mostly the hook, it may grow on me. Definitely a baby Cole vibe but Cole wasn't this polished for his debut which is great, should have room to grow. Thanksgiving sounds like a mixtape Cole song in the best way, I love it. Album is a solid listen all the way through.

Definitely another solid album we've been blessed with and it definitely has it's own tone and atmosphere so that helps separate it from other new releases. Love the chilled out vibe throughout. Cordae controls the pace well and turns it up when he wants. Honestly surprised by how versatile the album is as a whole considering how many different styles and techniques they go through with relative ease. I want a Cordae and Noname collab.

I'm 47 and not up on most of the rappers out, always like certain rappers...guess more of the lyricist type. Long story short i'm looking for new music and come across Black Thought and i'm like DAMN this dude is dope. So I text my younger brother and like man why you didn't tell me about Black Thought?! He's like from The Roots? I'm like yeah, hell all I knew was The Roots. My brothers reply..."This Guy" smh

Just also found out about Mysonne Lol

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

"Lyricist" is a tough term to go off of, it's a wide bucket. Black Thought might be the GOAT, so it's even harder to recommend anyone based off of that. Listen to all of his feature verses, his stuff on the Statik Selektah tapes from 2013-14 was just crazy, Birds Eye View and The Imperial. Then he was on Rapid Eye Movement by Pharoahe Monch, and then the Prhyme feature, dude is just crazy. You can check out the people he features with, not gonna be any scrubs.

From this year I'd check out Boogie's album, Guns by Quelle Chris is super lyrical but also kinda weird, KRIT, Mach-Hommy is another in the super lyrical but weird camp. Is wordplay enough to be a lyricist? Freddie Gibbs & Griselda have put some stuff out, even Curren$y is witty and clever, but I don't know if I'd say he's a lyricist, could go either way honestly. Eminem still makes music, it's very lyrical...unlistenable IMO, but lyrical for sure.

                          On to other stuff:

                          Spoiler

And last but not least, Freddie on this classic beat (would've been even better if they gave him the Juicy J remix breakdown), he really needs to put this out as a legit freestyle on a tape, or just go on other peoples' beats like the Dedication series, the people need it:

"Real king of the streets ****, got 3 books for the 20, Westbrook, rest in peace Nip
Real king of the streets ****, the marathon'll never stop, you put these ****** on their feet, Crip"

And I'm rewatching the Sopranos so all of his mafia references are so well timed right now, when I heard him call out Johnny Sack on the album I was just like this guy is in my mind.

Lyricist always seems like a really broad term to me that doesn't really carry much weight IMO. There are some guys that are wordy and have some fantastic, word structure and gymnastics, but don't really say anything meaningful. Then there are the guys who the opposite - they layer their phrases and lyrics to work on multiple levels, but they aren't as dynamic so it comes off less impressive.

All this to basically say I have no idea what it means I guess.

In my listening circle my top "lyricists" would probably be: Mos Def, Andre 3000, and GZA. Current? Big KRIT, NoName, and Gibbs (again if we're counting word gymnasts as lyricists).

Anyway, I listened to the new Chance "debut" once on Friday at work. Didn't really make any impression on me so I forgot about it the rest of the weekend and because Cordae's actual debut is so damn smooth. But for the reputation Chance has I haven't felt any kind of push from anybody for this new debut. Maybe he's trying to get out of his contract obligation to a better label? I don't know, but damn. The man was given a 0/10 review from the Reddit/YouTube reviewer god Anthony Fantano (aka The Needle Drop). Not even sure how that's possible.

Like I said - for his reputation Chance needs to pick his game up or his name going to lose what respect it has left. On one hand I want to support him because his activism is truly inspiring, but man he needs better product.

ANYWAY. Enough attention on the bad **** can we revel in the good ****? I'm loving The Lost Boy. Like I said before it's so damn smooth and does everything well. Cordae shows enough versatility to follow for awhile. Big KRIT has kind of cooled on me now that I realize its not quite on the level of 4eva or Cadillactica. I feel like KRIT is hitting all the right marks, but completely forgetting some hooks. Definitely an album to revisit and do a deep dive into because the quality is there, but my man needs some help with making memorable hooks. And Bandanna. That **** still hits ****ing hard at times, but Cataracts might be my favorite and it is certainly the smoothest on there.

Not really sure what's out for the rest of the year. I think Rapsody might have a new one coming soon.

There's a line from the pitchfork review of Chance's album, they said its "oppressively upbeat" lol. Can't even say I'm surprised, when this dude sang the ABC's on Khaled's album you knew it was the beginning of the end. We'll always have Acid Rap. Almost unreal how good it is front to back (and the loop!!!) with what this guys been putting out since.

I enjoyed his first debut album honestly, but nothing really stuck to me. Personally I know Chance more for his community work than his actual music.

The thread on reddit for the Needle Drop review is pretty good.
