Thinking about it more it would come across as a bit too heavy handed and emo-ish if they did that on the big screen.
My thoughts exactly. Superman is far too boring as this Man Of Steel with no real central issues besides losing his family.

There is no background, no story, nothing to get us emotionally involved in Superman's life. Well, there is, but the movies avoid getting into that. I'm not sure why.

Batman and Spider-Man, for example, have human emotions and real issues that people can relate to; and those issues are expressed on-screen many times, hammered into our heads so we could feel some attachment to their actions and the results.

      This excerpt:

Like the recent Batman sequel -- which has become the highest-grossing film of the year thus far -- Mr. Robinov wants his next pack of superhero movies to be bathed in the same brooding tone as "The Dark Knight." Creatively, he sees exploring the evil side to characters as the key to unlocking some of Warner Bros.' DC properties. "We're going to try to go dark to the extent that the characters allow it," he says. That goes for the company's Superman franchise as well.

      The above is good news.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Superman should never be dark. The reason the whole DCU considers the guy as their leader is because he inspires HOPE. He's the moral compass when everyone else has lost direction. He does the right thing without compromise.

Does that make him relatable to us? Most probably not. We aspire to become Superman. We relate with Clark Kent. The outcast. The guy you hardly notice. That bumbling idiot. The person who just wants to fit in.

Out of all the superhero alter-egos, his is one of the most relatable characters you could have.

That said, give Superman dark situations. Put him in real trouble. Just don't try to make Superman like Batman. He isn't dark and brooding. He doesn't seek revenge. He just does what he set-out to do when he put his cape on -- to make the world a better place and inspire the good in people. No matter how long it takes.

I wouldnt say that it had it's bad parts but it also had lots of potential. Superman shouldnt be dark like they are proposing in the reboot. The world and the path humanity has taken should be dark and Superman is that bright light that we aspire to go to.

They are not saying they will make Superman dark like Batman. They are saying they will make the story darker instead of this colorful, happy-go-lucky story it's been for years.

Superman has been too dry. It's time to inject some suspense into the films.

I'd do a Trilogy of the Death and Return of Superman. Some parts would have to be reworked. (the whole 3rd act of that story arc just wouldn't work) The first movie would be action packed and conclude on a very down note while the 2nd movie would be very dark and depressing with a world without Superman and the 3rd movie would be bombastic, action packed and full of the Superman ethos that some people love.

I think a second movie would be very hard to market since in the current sense of the movie, Supes would not be there.

Well, it could work with the 4 Supermen if they are used right.
