Nolan's head cannot be clear right now, he's still in post-production with Inception and his mind is more than likely geared towards that movie. One reason I like him so much is because he takes on one thing at a time. I really want this next Batman to be everything that The Dark Knight wasn't, and for it to be the epic of all epics.

    2) I just think it's too early. I understand that Batman Begins and The Dark Knight were three years apart, but I'm just not ready for a new Batman, not any time soon. The Dark Knight is still so fresh to me, it still feels like it just came out last summer for some reason. I understand that summer 2011 is still like 15 months away, but that's just how I feel. I think a crowd that doesn't quite have The Dark Knight still in the back of their minds will be more amped to see a new Batman, not so suddenly. That's how I am, at least. Not to say that I'm burned with it, but I want to re-up my feelings for the series... just not yet, though.

It's more of a mental thing than anything else, even if it isn't real to some of you... but 2012 makes more sense to me is all.
Agreed. I don't even expect the 3rd film to really touch TDK or Begins in overall quality. I just have this nagging feeling that Nolan's heart is not in this and he's being pressured to do this because the franchise has become a box office monster. Not to mention he's dabbling in the reboot for Superman, so he may have too many things on his plate. Just don't think his complete attention is on the 3rd film.

I guess it all depneds on who he chooses for a villian. If it's a more unconventional pick like Ledger was then there's hope but if he goes for the safe pick like Depp just for box office cred then Nolan might be mailing it in.

Depp is a phenomenal actor. If he picks him, I don't think he's mailing anything in. Sure, he's mega-famous, but dude can act. I would love to see him involved in some capacity because I know with absolute certainty that he would crush it.

Blzer...this movie has to come out in 2011, Nolan doesn't want to risk the world ending in 2012 and no one seeing the third Batman LOL!

          Bingo.

Depp, whether or not he is a mega-star and household name, is a terrific actor and could, without a doubt nail any role that Nolan asked him to, as he always does.

Adding Depp wouldn't just be adding a "name" to the cast, it'd be adding one of the better actors out there in this generation.

I really am not getting this "Depp is a huge name" deal that seems to be going on.

Is he any bigger than Morgan Freeman or Heath Ledger were, especially a Heath Ledger coming off Brokeback Mountain where he was nominated for every award in existence?

If we were talking about Will Smith, Tom Cruise, or Brad Pitt I might agree, but I'd put Depp in the category of Denzel Washington and Leo where they're certainly big name actors but they're big name actors because they do a very, very good job of acting.

Exactly...I just don't get it. I think he just wants a "lesser known actor" (Ben Foster, if I remember correctly) to be cast. I'd rather Depp.

Nolan just worked with Joseph Gordon Leavitt. I could see him be cast as the Riddler (assuming the Riddler is in it). He is a "on the rise" type of guy who is a very good actor and is playing a role out of his normal casting, much like Ledger.

His 100+ million domestic movies have been the Pirates movies and Willy Wonka both of which would have been wildly successful without him. It's not like everything he touches turns to gold.

I'm not saying he isn't a big name actor, but when Ledger was cast, he was huge coming off Brokeback Mountain and Morgan Freeman has been a "big name" for the past 20 years.

The only actors I could see being "too big" are Pacino and Cruise.

It's not like Depp would be signing onto a movie with unknown leads. Bale, Freeman, Oldman, and Caine are too good of actors to be intimidated or whatever by Depp.

A big name would be defined by what thay command per picture and Depp is an A lister by anybody's standards. He is easily top 5 in the world in what his asking fee is. That makes him a major "big name" and is one of a handful of stars who can carry a film just by his name.

Ledger was not an A lister at the time of TDK. Yes he was coming off Brokeback Mountain and it was a critical success but not close to being a box office success and Ledger certainly was not commanding $20+ million a picture and certainly was not considered an actor who could carry a picture in name alone in terms of box office #'s. Before BM he was starring in box office bombs like The Grimm Brothers (or whatever it was called) and needed Matt Damon to co-star to get the movie any recognition. I'm not sure how Freeman is included in this conversation. He plays a secondary role anyways and his fame is not close to what Depp's is in terms of box office appeal. And no the Pirates movie wouldn't have did half the money without Depp.

I like Depp very much as an actor, for certain roles. He has never played a truly menacing role in anything so he is unproven for a role in Nolan's Batman. The basis of his fame is Burton movies and playing a pirate for laughs. I don't want to see another Joker performance like Jack Nicholson where he just hams it up and has a few good quotable lines for the trailers.

In Burton's Batman you saw the Joker playing as Nicholson not vice versa and I would see the same happening with the Riddler playing as Depp, not Depp as the Riddler (if you get what I mean). He doesn't have the look. And the Riddler doesn't wear bad clown makeup to hide that look like Heath could. All his memorable performances have been pretty much the same. A quirky, witty, smart *** played with effeminate charm that equals box office appeal. That is not what the Riddler is close to being about. If Nolan went with him he is simply bowing to the producers who want to create buzz and a wide a demographic as possible (ie: females) about the 3rd film when it's not necessary. That's a safe pick.

Yeah I like Foster because he has the intensity and the look and that creepy geekiness that is the Riddler but there are several actors who could pull it off, except Depp IMO.

He was pretty damn psychotic in Sweeney Todd. I don't know about menacing, but he can play the villian.

Anyways I really like the Riddler rumor. It'd be cool to have him show up and not only cause havoc but actually discover Batman's hidden ID would be truly interesting.
