He's got 1 $1 case and 2 $1,000,000 cases. People have taken the deal before and had the $1M case. He decided to take his chances and go for it... He ended up losing... I don't see how it's the worst decision in Deal or No Deal's history at all - I've seen far, far dumber moves.

All he did was take a risk that to him was worth it. He had a shot at it, and instead of folding, he decided to take his chance. That's how you win big, you take chances. So happened it was the wrong move, but he was still brave enough to take it.

The only idiot is the person who posted that on youtube, calling it the dumbest move in Deal or No Deal history.

I don't see how he's an idiot. Most people here would have done the same thing, though won't admit to it now, especially after having seen this guy.

I on the other hand would not have. If I'm not at least doubling what I already have, the risk is not worth it.

Too bad for him, though. Even while watching it and well knowing the outcome, I was still hoping he was going to win it. That's a real heart-breaker.

Um, no. A 50/50 shot at winning 400k more is not worth the risk at that point. 600k can really go a long way. Yeah, I understand taking a risk, but my odds would have to be higher than 50/50 to risk it.

That's what I said... if I'm not at least doubling what I already have, it's not worth it. $1 million is not doubling $600,000.

Now, that also doesn't mean it IS worth the risk if I'm at least doubling it, but I can at least eliminate whether not doubling it is. It's all in the heat of the moment, and I feel most people would be greedy enough.

I'm just saying his last choice was 50/50 when 1 case had a dollar and 1 case had a million. I would not gamble 600k on a coin flip. I fully understand (and might do) the risk prior to that point. With the million still alive and 2 smaller values around, ok...just the 50/50 (especially when 1 buck was my worst case), it's not smart.

I don't know if this guy was rich all ready or something, but if I was a normal person/family I couldn't turn down 600k to change my life.

It was actually $400K+ but still. You just can't risk it when your worst case scenario is $1. Unless you're already well off or don't really care.

The math says he should have gone for it, but you have to take into account the diminishing returns you get as the amount of money gets larger and larger. In a more clearer example, the difference between getting 0 dollars and 5 million dollars is much greater than the difference between getting 15 million and 20 million would make. Unless he was already quite wealthy then the variance in risking another box wasn't worth the overall +EV.

However, you should ALWAYS switch when given the chance, just like in the three doors problem. I think that was explained earlier for the non-math inclined.

Those claiming they would "take it" probably never would have gotten there in the first place. That same attitude would've most likely had them bow out at $300,000 or such.
