I don't see how he's an idiot. Most people here would have done the same thing, though won't admit to it now, especially after having seen this guy.

I on the other hand would not have. If I'm not at least doubling what I already have, the risk is not worth it.

Too bad for him, though. Even while watching it and well knowing the outcome, I was still hoping he was going to win it. That's a real heart-breaker.

I wouldn't have done it, I would have taken that deal in a heartbeat. By going for it you either increase your prize by $397,000 or decrease it by $602,999. Seems like a pretty easy situation to take the deal in if you ask me.

Also since he did go for it, they give you the option to switch your case with the one that's still on the board. You should ALWAYS switch your case. It gives you a higher probability of winning.

I wouldnt've done that...$603,000 is a **** ton of money. Take the chance and make it, you gain $397,000. Take it and lose, you lose $602,999. I wouldn't take a 50/50 chance at losing more than I would gain.

EDIT: Sandman beat me to my reasoning

His expected value was $666,667 if my math is right. Since he was offerred below that, he clearly should've kept going as he did. Any other move would've been a sub-optimal choice. However, Sandman is correct in saying that he should've switched the case. It would've given him a higher chance at winning that mill if I understand the situation correctly. He made the statistically sound choice in going for it though, I wouldn't be too disappointed unless I was really pressed for cash financially.

If I ever got on a gameshow like that I would take anything over $250K and run. Having my mortgage entirely paid off would be such a great feeling. Granted the guy was in the heat of the moment, but judging by the size of his belly, enough is never enough. He probably just viewed the money as a pile of lettuce and thats rabbit food. Had he been playing for buckets of rocky road, he probably would have taken the 602,000.

I agree with that. Even if he did get the million dollars, he still took the risk of losing 603,000 (which he did LOL!) or gaining 397,000. In the end, 603,000 would've been enough for the guy to stroll through the rest of his life, with no financial worries.

If you think of it though, that's the point of the show basically. A bunch of people taking extraordinary risks to get the 1 million. But this guy, is obviously the biggest bonehead since the show came to the air.

Well, my response came from taking a statistical probability course in college. He did the right thing, most of the time he would've been making more by going on than stopping short and taking the 603,000. I don't know how his financial situation is and that would obviously factor into the decision. I don't know why you all are blindly calling him dumb, when he probably made the right choice, at least statistically.

And 603,000 is hardly enough to just stroll through the rest of life especially when you factor in the taxation. It would make things a hell of a lot easier for him but he's not in the easy for the rest of his life either.
