The PS3 is great for a few reasons:

1) It's also a PS3 (duh).

2) It's supposedly the best DVD upconverter around.

3) It allows for firmware upgrades. For instance, there were BR 1.0 players (like the PS3) that couldn't upgrade to 2.0, but the PS3 can through a USB flash drive or something of another. Basically, your PS3 will always be up to date with the others.

4) This is a big one for me, but it's also a TrueHD and DTSHD decoder and allows for TrueHD and DTAHD passthrough. My receiver does not enable these two things, but will do passthrough if the source allows for it, which the PS3 does. I know that not all of them do this, especially since this is one of the things the PS3 had in its update.

5) Not sure what kind of storage devices other BR players are, but this one can store as much BR utility as your HDD can hold.

6) There are any customizable options for video, audio, and even energy saving settings (it has its own sleep timer, but it's more of an idle timer).

7) Let's face it, someday there will be movies available for purchase through the PlayStation Store. Here is just another opportunity.

Thank you, that sounds great. Didn't know it could do all that. Definitely going to look into maybe purchasing one tomorrow. Sadly, there are no PS3 Bundle deals like the 360. The only one i found is one with Casino Royale and Rachet and Clamk for $400 which isn't bad i guess.

Saw 5 people tented out at Best Buy. I don't know how you can give up Thanksgiving to get a small discount on electronics.

How me and my roommates are doing it is we're taking breaks to have dinner with our families.

Samsung's DVD upconverters blow the PS3 out of the water. My BD-UP5000 makes DVDs look much better than when I had a PS3.

I thought playstation store already let you purchase some movies?

My apologies, I meant to specify Blu-ray. I believe at this moment you can only rent BR's from the store, and not purchase.

This I did not know, thanks. Did you ever try tweaking the options in the PS3? I forget what they are off the top of my head, but there are things you can tweak from 0 - 3, including turning Super White on. I wasn't sure if you've checked those out and found a better picture than default.

Tranformers on blu ray is now $9.99 on Amazon. I picked up 2 copies along with Reservoir Dogs to get free shipping.

No Best Buy or Walmart crowds for me.

Many sites still give the PS3 the nod as the best BR player out there. As Blzer mentioned, perhaps it is some tweaking with the PS3 options.

So I'm making myself a little spreadsheet when I go shopping tomorrow morning... I've obtained the Walmart prices (aside from Swordfish at Fry's, I think these are the cheapest new in-store prices around) and I want to compare them to the Black Friday deals, which I know all of them around listed. Anyway, the top section before the break are the DVDs that I already own that I want to convert to Blu-ray, and the ones below that are the ones that I have yet to own overall that I want to end up owning. The ones in bold are the ones that, if I see it in the store, I'm definitely getting it. The total amount is the sum of all of the movies (tax not included). I have a few collections listed below for comparative reasons.

If anyone can chip in some of the in-store deals they've seen so far for the following movies (and which store they found it on), that would be great!

By the way, I know that Blu-rays aren't the TOP thing to shop for on Black Friday, but they're sort of around there. Considering they won't have twenty copies of each movie (and for me it's going to be all about taking advantage of this deal as much as possible), do you think it's worth standing in line very early to try and beat people in front of me that are possibly also going straight to that section? I definitely don't want to miss out on a copy of Casino Royale or something when I could have had the chance by getting in line earlier.

I know they have Transformers for 9.99 (Blu) at BB along with Entourage 1,2,3 (both parts) for $40 on DVD.

Most of the retailers have started black Friday online.

Smart move by them as this allows them the opportunity for more sales in a weak economy.

Plus, it might cut down on the lines.

I'm going for a free breakfast tomorrow morning at Sam's and picking up a Garmin 750 GPS for $198.99.

I agree that the PS3 is the best bluray player out there. That doesnt mean that it upconverts DVDs the best. I didnt need to tweak any options to make my Samsung 5000 upconvert DVDs well. The ps3 is the best bluray player because its future proof and Sony is quick to update the player if there are any playback issues. With that said, its DVD upconverting is on par with most bluray players and nothing to brag about.
