I don't even watch Sports Center or ESPN this time of year, (unless Serena Williams is playing tennis!) I probably won't turn it to Espn again til College Football starts back up. I use to like First Take but I'm burnt out on Skip and Steven A. I am starting to get into the Artie Lange show on the Audience Network.

Re: ESPN is now dead to me!

ESPN pulled the plug on our Birmingham ESPN Radio station along with another station they were pushing.

Paul Finebaum's ESPN deal out of Charlotte has shaken up the media here a lot. He wanted to go back to his original station, which was a former ESPN affiliate and they decided his services were worth shutting things down and buying out contracts.

That station will likely get it's ESPN affiliation back and one of the shows on there now will get axed. The messed up part is, it won't be the ****ty morning show with Al Delgreco and Jay Barker. It will be the new guys they brought in to fill the Finebaum void.

Radio is such an annoying business to deal with sometimes. I enjoyed listening to SVP & Russilo (sp?) and Cowherd. Freddie Coleman is okay sometimes, but he spends most of his time talking about what he's going to be talking about instead of just covering the damn stuff.

Coming up in 15 minutes.. yada yada yada.

DP show is not bad, but I dont get how people dislike Cowherd, He's funny and usually tells it how it is. DP can sometimes be a little smug and can sound like hes trying to lecture his audience. I think people are overstating their ESPN hate too. Sportscenter does a great job of giving you the daily highlights and stories, anyone who is watching First Take or their other shows probably have too much time on their hands tbh.

Sportscenter does a horrible job with highlights. The last few times I've had it on, they show like 2 plays, the score, and that's it. I know more than that happened in most games. Would not be shocked if Homer Bailey's no hitter got about a 30 second clip. So much nicer to just watch MLB Network or NBA, whatever, and actually see what happened in a game.

Sportscenter is terrible with highlights imo. They seem completely obsessed with Lebron James these days. Its completely unwatchable to me.

I only tune in for their live sports coverage.

Fox Sports has a show called "The 'Lights" I think, just highlights with some monotone guy talking over them.

The funny thing, and you may have seen me complain about this on twitter, is that all my friends who hate baseball complain every year after the NBA playoffs end about how baseball will take up all of Sportscenter. Thing is, baseball still gets just about the same time, while they will still find a way to talk about the bolded. They also act like it's the longest down period of the year, when they'll get football related news by the bunch after 3 weeks or so when the Finals end.

I don't think they actually pay attention to what comes on Sportscenter. It's not the early 00s late 90s anymore.

In terms of the debate format that's enveloped nearly all sports coverage in at least some regard, I thought Joe Montana hit the nail right on the head in SI's "Where Are They Now?" article on his behalf this week:

...He was on NBC's NFL Studio show on Sundays. He hated it. He had to be in New York from Friday to Monday, while his family remained in San Francisco. He wasn't comfortable talking into a camera.

Mostly, though, he could not stand being a pundit.

"Why did he throw that ball behind the guy?" Montana says. "Well, I don't know. Maybe the guy is supposed to run an out and he didn't. Maybe he read something else. That's the thing I didn't like about the announcing part: They want you to be loud, argumentative and definitive. You didn't have to be right. They want someone to say, Oh, what an idiot. . . . I have a hard time doing that to other players because I know how difficult it is. Yeah, you should be able to do it a certain way, but the other guys get paid too."

He has a point. It's worse on sports talk radio and the debate shows. It always irked me when pundits would spend hours parsing words or plays athletes do or say and pile on them. Athletes and coaches aren't really trained on how to talk to the media so they aren't taken out of context, nor should they be. They should focus on the game above everything else.

So who is trained on how to talk to media other than PR reps?

                            Yasiel Puig Network.

EDIT: I don't even know who the guy is, but I know how to spell his name. Since everytime I turn on ESPN they are talking about him.

Well, he is pretty fantastic and has been consistent, albeit for just 5 weeks thus far.

What else should they be spending the bulk of their time talking about?

Baseball is the only sport going right now and he's the biggest story in it (and it's not even close).

It's either this or more Dwight Howard.
