On a completely different note, Slumdog Millionaire FTW.

How does a movie based on real life events win best screenplay?

Doesn't that pretty much mean it wrote itself so they basically won an award for making a move on a good story?

Weird, I thought Wall-E should have won that.

Bah, not a Sean Penn fan (as an actor). I thought he won Murray's award in 2004, and now he's got Rourke's. He even almost seemed embarrassed to have won it tonight given how the buzz was all about Mickey Rourke's comeback.

I can't really comment on Slumdog, as I haven't watched it. I just haven't had any interest in it, but I did get sick of seeing it win what felt like everything. Just going by these awards one would think the movie was perfection on the silver screen. Maybe it is, I don't know.

To be truthful, from mild experience in classes and from readings I've had to do for said classes, it seems a lot harder to write screenplays based on real events or books. Yes, you have everything there for you...but it is much harder to do those things justice and to make sure you have everything needed incorporated. A lot more thought, surprisingly, has to go into the adaptations of real-events and other stories.

I guess I could see that because it severely limits creativity, but on the other hand, you know how the conflict will begin, how it will escalate, and how it will end.

So while it may be harder, does it necessarily mean it's the best?

Well Rourke blew it because he did the whole Norbit thing. Like Eddie Murphy making that pathetic movie right before the awards, Rourke blabbing on about possibly being in Wrestlemania did him in.

With Rourke musing about fighting Chris Jericho the Academy would not want thier best actor appearing in a WWE event a month after thereby cheapening the award and who knows what gimmick Vince McMahon had for the Oscar itself. Even though his handlers got Rourke to do an about face the next day the damage was done. I don't think the Academy was entirely convinced he wouldn't show up for Wrestlemania especially if the price is right.

Oh, I didn't mean for that to sound like I was defending whether or not it was the best. I honestly couldn't tell you which screenplay was the best without sitting there and reading them and probably then watching the movies back-to-back to see how well they translated.

Was just pointing out that just because you have the story already created for you, does not mean writing the screenplay for said story will be easier than writing one completely from scratch.

Agreed. Even though The Dark Knight is my favorite movie, I would have felt kind of embarrassed watching it win everything it was nominated in. Granted, I do believe it deserved a few more things personally (and I wish there was a way to put it on the ballot for Best Musical Score or whatever the correct title is), but for a movie to completely pwn the Oscars like this just doesn't feel right.

You know what was funny? It sounded like Will Smith gave the AA a little cheap shot with his sarcastic remark about fans for action movies, because they seem to pick a lot of movies where there isn't a large fan base revolving around that. What was worse was when he said that and Benjamin Button got the visual effects award. I mean, compared to the other movies, it doesn't really belong in the "action" department that he was praising so much.

And completely unrelated... what was Eddie Murphy nominated for?

Queen Latifah has been singing for pretty much her whole career, she just didn't start getting a lot of attention for it until a few years ago when she had a part in Chicago. She was nominated for an Oscar for that role btw. She came out with an album a year or two later, performing jazz standards. I'm surprised you didn't see anything about that, it was just around 4-6 years ago and there was a solid buzz about her and both projects.
