As it stands now, I doubt we possess any technology that could destroy an asteroid with any reasonable amount of certainty.

I'm fairly certain we could have destroyed this if we wanted to. It was "no more than 200 feet wide."

I doubt 200 feet vs nuclear weapons would be much of a contest

Pretty sure Nasa knew about this one. I've watched specials where they talked about objects like this, that will be close but miss. Makes sense that this was one of them.

Why even really worry about something like this that we have no control over? As it stands now, I doubt we possess any technology that could destroy an asteroid with any reasonable amount of certainty. Of all things in my life that I'm going to worry about, an asteroid hitting earth is way down on the list, even considering the fact that one just came so close to hitting us. If something hits us, then it hits us...**** happens.

but you don't have to destroy it, that's actually the worst idea ever. All we'd have to do is nudge it slowly to change its course. The technology exists to do that.

It's all calculus and math, though. It's a set orbit that won't change unless an outside force acts upon it, so I think they could probably hit it with a pretty high degree of certainty.

Yeah, if we shoot a missile at it, then it'll blow into a bunch of pieces. That wouldn't particularly be a good thing because instead of one big asteroid, you have hundreds of smaller ones raining down upon the earth.

Most if not all of which would burn up in the atmosphere.
