Got bored the other night and watch (500) Days of Summer again. I forgot just how good this movie is.

            X-Men: First Class

When i first saw the trailer for this movie months ago when it premiered, i said this was going to be Batman Begins of the Marvel and X-Men franchise.

With how they reformed Batman and grounded it in realism and gave us a "mature" character, Marvel was able to succeed and carve a spot right next to or even above Batman:Begins

This movie was a freaking mazing. They did an excellent job crafting Erik and Xavier. The movie had a mature feeling but still fun enough to "marvel" in itself with the mutants and its characters. The story was a good set up and origin story for really set off something big, with that being said the movie self contained was also very good.

A couple things sort of bothered me though

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

I saw X-Men First Class tonight. A great film and an awesome comic book movie. I agree with marshall that it is similar to Batman Begins in what it does for the X-Men franchise. I hope they continue with this, but I know that is probably doubtful because Marvel wants to reign in all their properties. Its a pity because I really enjoyed this cast and the relationship between Erik and Charles was done really well.

I watched Blow last night. I'm not sure about this movie. It is a good film, not great. Johnny Depp is good. I'm curious as to why Penelope got a top billing since she's only in about 30 minutes of it. With that said, the thing of most significance about this movie is the reality its based on and just how massive that whole trafficking was. Its definitely crazy that so few men controlled so much.

Just watched Unstoppable. It was pretty good, I question the physics of it towards the end, but still a good movie. I feel like whatever Denzel touches turns into gold.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Just recently finished a Barbara Stanwyck - George Sanders flick from the '50s called Witness to Murder (1954).

                    Here's the summary:

Barbara Stanwyck sees a murder through her bedroom window, but no one will believe her. She is stalked by suave killer who first takes steps to convince police she is crazy, but she has ally in sympathetic policeman
That pretty much sums it up without being a spoiler at all. The movie starts off pretty well and actually has a very moody feel to it. George Sanders is perfectly cast as the villain of the piece as his character knows that Stanwyck saw everything so he does a frame up job making her look batcrap insane. This is where the movie's failings come in as Stanwyck's character has to act real shrill and come off as a crazy person. Luckily Stanwyck's acting is good enough that someone can overlook it.

In some ways the way that Sanders' character goes about the framing of Stanwyck as a wackjob reminds me of the old Columbo TV series where the culprit will do anything to throw the scent off them and onto someone else but Columbo is dead set on getting the guy. In this case Stanwyck is pretty set on proving that she DID see the murder and she's not crazy. The sympathetic police detective mentioned above becomes quite invested in her and actually falls for her so that's where the sympathy lies. He tires his darndest to get her to believe that she didn't see a murder at all.

Overall the movie isn't bad and while some aspects of it stretches the suspension of believability a bit it's done capably well by the three leads. Oh and here's something that freaked me out. The movie takes place in LA and there's a scene where the captain (the only scene he's in btw) is visited by Sanders where he provides letters that Stanwyck allegedly wrote that makes death threats towards him. Anyways the captain's name?

                    Captain Donnelly.

The actor that plays the role isn't Irish at all but just the name shook me up since playing LA Noire and all that

Anywho I give this 2 1/2 stars out of 5. The acting, mood for the most part and great use of B&W photography makes this worth watching.

Uh oh, Fresh has tied me in number of posts in this thread! I must watch more new movies!

(don't worry, this post won't count... I'll edit the next movie I see into this post or delete it lol )

I certainly plan on watching Unstoppable soon, as well as some movies in theaters (Bridesmaids, The Hangover: Part II, X-Men: First Class... what else is out?).

I watched City Slickers last night. I think it was the first time I had watched the whole thing from start to finish as opposed to seeing random clips while flipping through TNT and TBS. It was good. To be honest, I was surprised how much I ended up liking it as I was expecting it to be a lot more hokie and schtick, but it was funny and I really enjoyed the dynamics between the friends. Daniel Stern is the man in everything he does, though - definite scene-stealer. Also, I knew I noticed a young Jake Gyllenhaal as Danny.
