Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1
Watched another Republic Serial this time it's Federal Agents Vs. Underworld Inc.. (1949) It basically deals with an archeologist who's been kidnapped and criminals trying to get another of the Golden Hands which will lead them to untold riches. This serial was pretty darn straightforward but there were a couple twists that I didn't expect. One being one of the archeologist's assistants being in cahoots with the bad guys and then at the very end it turns out the archeologist had planned his own kidnapping and was working with the bad guys all along BUT he double crosses them!
The serial also had a couple interesting stunts as well that was pretty neat for the period such as an airplane chase and a couple stunts involving cars blowing up over bridges.
Overall I give this 2 1/2 stars out of 4 as the actors and the twists rise above a pedestrian story.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1
it was really good but the lead was way too average. Coulda used someone with a little more charm, Kristen Stewart was way too hot for that dude. Someone like Emile Hirsch or Michael Cera woulda been much better.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1
That role seemed written for Michael Cera imo.
I never got why that movie being unrealistic was such a big deal. Why was it so important that this movie be realistic anyway?PS: You guys are great.

The bending bullets stuff was cool. The part that I thought was beyond unrealistic was the guy being able to jump through a high rise building and make it across the street and into the other building. How ridiculous is that?Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1
I had no problems with how unrealistic Wanted was, I mean do you believe when they were shooting the movie the director was saying, "Hm, I want this in there but it might not be realistic enough..."
I just thought it was a crappy movie.Comment

The guy is a Michael Cera clone.Originally posted by BlzerLet me assure you that I am a huge proponent of size, and it greatly matters. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise.
If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1
Last night I watched a most interesting 1960 WB movie called The Crowded Sky. (1960) It's one of the early films in the disaster film genre though long on character development and short on actual disaster. Some folks say this was THE first modern disaster movie though John Wayne's The High and the Mighty (1954) predates it.
The film actually has some pretty darn good stars at the helm with Dana Andrews as Cpt. Dick Barnett and Efrem Zimbalist Jr. as Dale Heath (Best known to you guys as the voice of Alfred in the various Batman animated projects) Rhonda Fleming and a very sexy Anne Francis also have big parts in the film.
The film also seemed to be a vehicle for a John Kerr whose career never really panned out though I thought he did a fairly good job in his role.
Anyways time for the summary:
An navy jet with a defective radio system and a passenger plane get in danger of collision. In flashbacks we learn about the personal problems of the pilots and most of the crew.
Rule OTOH hates Dick's guts because during a company poker game when it was mentioned Mike would ascend to the rank of Captain Dick then used his influence to talk the others against it and reveled in doing so for it seemed Mike wanted to "walk two streets"....
You see Mike is the son of a reclusive and long dead painter and he wants to follow in his father's footsteps as an artist but he also loves flying. The night of the poker game Mike meets Kitty Foster (Anne Francis) and they soon fall in love. Foster is also in the airline business as a stewardess and happens to be on the same flight.
The whole flashback as narrative would be used to great effect in the Airport movies and spoofed heavily in the two Airplane! films. There's also the storyline involving Efram Zimbalist Jr's. character and the rocky relationship with his gold digging slut of a wife.
As for the passengers they were all ripe for spoofery. You had the elderly doctor with his dying wife (heart problems) A guy (who's a dead ringer for Mike Huckabee) and a woman who've never experienced love due to their hang ups, a guy and a woman who used to be married and who reconnect and as comic relief, an actor with his agent. The actor does his best "tortured" Marlon Brando impression while the agent is a wise acre old lady.
As for the disaster portion of the movie? It's quite good for the time and if you've all seen Airport '75 you'll know that the roles are reversed with Zimbalist being the captain and Andrews as the navy pilot. The effects were pretty good for the time and the immediate events leading up to and after the actual accident was damn tense. The only time it lost realism was when the airliner was landing as they clearly used a model airplane.
All in all, it was an enjoyable movie and if you're interested it's available in the WB Archive collection of DVDs. I give this 3 out of 4 stars.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club
