Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1

To finish off the Dirty Harry series I watched Dead Pool last night. Visually, it is probably the best of the series on blu-ray, but thats about the only thing it has going for it. The whole movie is like a self-mockery, riddled with cop-action movie cliches and interesting characters that are under-utilized. The whole movie just moves from one ridiculous thing to another, whether it be an action sequence, dialogue, or some random plot development, but yet therein lies the source of enjoyment of watching this film in the series. Clint Eastwood is barely there, but there's so much ridiculous **** going on around him it doesn't really matter.

Anyway, not to get too indepth but these things are what bothered me the most:
    1) the real killer - I hate when a film tries to stay ahead of the audience and add a twist for the reveal and this just came off as melodramatic to me. When the killer and his motives are explained, basically in passing, with one or two sentences it makes him seem irrelevant to the whole movie. At least make it somebody we had seen on screen before.
    2) RC Car Chase - The level of ridiculous of this scene is just mind-blowing, but in the right context it could have actually worked. Without any warning or really any explaination, the killer just happens to be an expert at bomb and RC car making. Not only that, but he can drive two separate cars at the same time in the same car chase. This sequence is actually pretty good though, just came out of nowhere.
    3) Harpoon - really?
    4) Idiotic henchmen - I don't know why, but it seems like in a lot of bad/decent action movies, the henchmen are complete noobs. This combined with the RC car chase makes me wonder why the bad guys feel like they have to put themselves in a corner from the get go, perhaps they like the odds stacked ridiculously high against them.

I will probably watch this film again. A young Jim Carrey singing GnR is a treat (even if is ridiculous), and Liam Neeson is great (but severely underutilized) in his role. It is still fun in its light-hearted, big-gun shooting, killing every bad guy kind of way. Plus, the car chase is pretty trippy.

Shooter - Very nice. I'm a big fan of sniper flicks and this one didn't disappoint. Kate Mara is a looker.

Indeed. I really do like the movie, but didn't like that... thing Danny Glover had in his mouth that made him sound like a goon. I also didn't care much for the actor who played the Montana senator. The only unfortunate thing about this movie (and it's not really the movie's fault) is the Blu-ray has lossy audio. This was before Paramount shaped up and became better with their transfers.

I thought this movie was supposed to set up a sequel or two, like those old Sniper movies. Maybe not though.

Beginning was cool, but it got worse as it went on. I agree with the Danny Glover comment...he ruined it.

Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1

Since I last posted here I saw 3 movies (2 theatrical and one was a TV movie) I won't go into long detailed reviews but just give quick hits:

You Can't Get Away with Murder (1939)

            Plot Summary:

Johnny learns crime from petty thug Frank Wilson. When Wilson kills a pawnbroker with a gun stolen from Johnny's sister Madge's fiance Fred Burke, Fred goes to Sing Sing's death house. Wilson uses all the pressure he can to keep Johnny silent, even after he and Johnny themselves wind up in the big house.
This is a WB B movie starring Humphrey Bogart as Frank and Dead End Kid Billy Halop (who I think should've had a more fruitful career in film) as Johnny. This was before Bogart's 2nd big break in film (High Sierra ('41)) so he's still doing some B and A- pictures. This is a moderately interesting little film that sees Bogie at his worse as a scumbag thug who'll do anything to save his skin, even the ultimate act of murder. (which I won't spoil for you guys) Halop does a fairly good job as Johnny and you can see he had some acting chops outside of his silly Dead End Kids stuff. The movie also has one of my favorite character actors of the period in Henry Travers who plays Pops. Pops tries to get Johnny to get away from Frank's influence and make a break because he sees the good side in Johnny. Travers adds a good bit of humanity in an otherwise tough guy crime/prison film.

This movie gets 3 stars out of 4 for Bogie and Travers' solid supporting role.

Next up is Inside Detroit (1956)

            Plot Summary:

There's no IMDB summary but basically this is a union vs. racketeers story. When Blair Vickers' brother is killed in a bomb blast he suspects it was done by big time auto union boss/racketeer Gus Linden. Vickers uses Linden's teenaged son with a conscience to fight against his father and eventually bring down Gus' auto union racket.

This was one of the many "expose" films of the '50s which was a fad where Hollywood centered movies around a city and created a story based on corruption and the people who fight against it. This is one of the lesser efforts as the two leads are played by Irish actors. I really couldn't buy Dennis O'Keefe as a Detroit auto union guy though Pat O'Brien did work well in my mind as the greasy and slimy Gus Linden who portrays himself as a good family man but in reality is a corrupt racketeer with a vice madam as his girl on the side. Really, the movie was pretty plodding and kinda stupid but O'Brien was neat to watch.

            1 1/2 out of 4 stars

Last but not least is a TV movie which served as a pilot for a proposed Charlie Chan TV show.

The Return of Charlie Chan (1973)

            Plot Summary:

Charlie Chan investigates a murder case aboard the yacht of a wealthy Greek shipping tycoon
Well it's a bit more then that LOL but I can tell you why no one has bothered to make a more detailed summary. The show is CONFUSING AS HELL! I won't even bother to attempt to describe it. It's so poorly explained and executed that half the time I was wondering what the heck am I watching here. That being said, I think the potential was there for an updated Charlie Chan series as Ross Martin grows on the viewer as Chan and there's that kitschy '70s vibe going on. The people behind the production really dropped the ball by going with a pretentious, sprawling murder mystery.

At least Leslie Nielsen was on hand to slightly overact

I was off yesterday so I watched a couple of movies on demand.

Abandoned. Typicall frustrating horror flick. Nice twists in the plot though. A couple spots gave me the chills. Not bad altogether.

And finally saw National Treasure 2. Fantastic adventure movie. I love these flicks.

Eh, the sequel gets no love from me. The first is great, but they did to the second what Revenge of the Fallen did to Transformers... only in a PG fashion.

Next on my list is Mirrors.

I watched Michael Clayton the other night after a co-worker recommended it. I wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised. Good flick, I was entertained.

I watched a William H. Macy movie called Edmond late last night. It's extremely dark and gloomy, but fascinating. A good mix of dark comedy is in it as well.

                        Very bizarre movie...

                        I'd recommend it.

I was laughing my *** off when Macy was watching the cheap Bai Ling peep show and said "How does this thing come down? It doesn't come down? Then what the **** am I paying you ten bucks for!?"
