I saw Safe House last night with my wife. I'll just keep it short by saying it was a letdown for us. It was action-packed, but the storyline could have been a lot better. At the end, I was like, "that's it?"

However, I'd recommend you guys go see it for yourselves. Maybe it's me.

I would say the same thing. Action was good, even though Espinosa created a nauseating version of what Greengrass puts on film when it comes to shaky-cam effects.

I thought Reynolds' character was kind of unassuming in a bad way. I never really felt that he would do some of the things that he did, especially given his first few moments we see of him on film. He just didn't come out as "relatable" in the way that he probably should have.

Side plots were also built up for much ado about nothing, and the one or two [not quite but almost] Macguffins in the film could have either been completely removed or tweaked to more yield more satisfying results.

I can't say that I would "easily recommend" this film, but I thought that Denzel was totally into character, and helped the story move along any time that he was on screen, which to some people is just enough. I also liked seeing Vera Farmiga and Brendan Gleeson fill in the background. I had no idea they were in the film until the opening credits.

Anyway, make sure you downplay the term "Safe House" so that it's not thought of like the film "Panic Room" uses its environments. This is very much an open-world kind of film, and intertwines a bit of cat-and-mouse with lock-from-key action telling devices.

I won't be buying this on Blu-ray, and wish I saw The Woman in Black instead. Definitely leaves you wondering what more they could have done with this kind of story and these kinds of characters.

Rango - I thought ILM did a heckuva job with the graphics. Right up there with anything Pixar has done and for a kid's movie, it's not really kiddie in terms of overall plot and feel but it's definitely suitable for all ages. Younger kids probably wouldn't like it though because it doesn't feature cute animals.

Crazy, Stupid, Love - Surprisingly, I liked it a lot. I thought it was going to be the typical rom-com but it wasn't. I wouldn't mind seeing a Carrel/Gosling buddy movie in the future.

Saw War Horse with the GF last night, eh, it was an alright movie some of the storytelling reminded me of an old movie called THE YELLOW ROLLS ROYCE which told the story of said car and the several owners through its life. It was ALMOST a movie of vignettes but it was all interconnected. The strongest parts of the movie was everything before the war and the part where the two main horses are in France with the young girl and her grandfather.

One thing that was interesting and it's something the GF and I both thought of independently of each other is that the ending reminded us of the 1st intermission of GONE WITH THE WIND when Scarlett says "i'll never go hungry again!" and you have the sunset etc etc. The lighting, music and composition of the end of WAR HORSE called that to mind immediately.

Puss In Boots: I watched it last night with my son and surprisingly it was good, not as great as Shrek but it is worth it. I recommend anyone with kids to rent it or purchase it when it comes out on DVD or Blu Ray.

Saw Safe Hous at the theatre this weekend. Decent movie, but not your typical Denzel movie. Well Denzel was great but other parts were lacking. I'd still recommend it, twas entertaining.

              Now watching drive.

Stand and Deliver. EJO was just ridiculously good. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that Andy Garcia probably begged to have the producer somehow show that a psychometrician can still come across as a bad ***. His scene with Olmos was tremendous, but did he really need to double tap the table 4x in the same scene?? Cripes. S'ok.... Olmos puts him in his place.

Gah, thanks for reminding me of this film! I had watched the first half hour of it or so once and said [somewhere in this thread, actually] that I would watch it again. Unfortunately, I didn't remember what the film was called, and was actually looking to watch it earlier this week.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Well I saw Moneyball....Not bad at all though I think some things were Holywoodized. I mean, I have a hard time believing that Art Howe was so out of the loop and beligerent about what Billy Beane was doing. The movie for all it's hype of making Billy Beane look good in fact, made him look less like a genius and more like a guy who was lucky enough to take a chance on Paul DePodesta (mostly as the Peter Brand character was a composite) rather than being some grand visionary.

Overall though I thought the acting was pretty good though this was one of those movies where acting isn't the main thrust. I think the movie was quite "inside baseball" which made me smile to no end though it led me having to explain to my GF the machinations that Beane was going through to acquire Ricardo Rincon LOL

It's a solid, not great movie and Brad Pitt was pretty good.

IMO there was the standard "Hollywooding" of the story but they did a great job showing how the operation operates. Just a little bit more on-screen action was desired, but the scenes such as the trade deadline were great.

Finally got to see this on Saturday Nite.

Really loved teh movie and how 95% of it happened and wasnt all "Hollywoodized."

Solid 8/10 from me and Franco was fabulous.

17 years late to the party, but I really enjoyed this film. Very simple. Hearing the title and seeing the cover, I always thought it was a chick flick. It is not.
