My blood valentine 3D. Typical horror flick, but the 3D (using passive glasses) was pretty darn good on my LG plasma. The depth was easy to notice. Wearing the paper glasses didn't both me any on top of my regular glasses.

Will watch again just for the 3D effects.

Dog Day Afternoon - This is probably one of the best bank robbery movies ever. Its comedic, dramatic, sad, social commentary, etc. I'm somewhat surprised the movie is almost 40 years old considering the social context of the mid-section of the film and where we are at today.

Also, the roll-call of people I recognized from various films was borderline insane, especially considering most of the cast would probably be considered "minor" actors.

I always have to watch a long portion of Seven when it's on television. Such a great film. Never really sat down to figure a top ten but I'd be hard pressed to name 10 films I enjoyed more than that one.

Scream 4. It was alright. Better then most movies that go to the 4th one.

Burn After Reading-Hilarious and entertaining. John Malkovich was great as was Brad Pitt and George Clooney.

Big Stan- Decent comedy. Not as funny as Rob Schniders other movies including The Animal, Deuce Bigalow, and The Hot Chick.

Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1

Been slacking on my movie watching (I watched an old movie the other day called Reno which was alright. Pretty good B-Picture) so last night I watched something fluffy and light:

Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs (2009)

This was a pretty fun movie and the message it had wasn't shoved TOTALLY down everyone's throats. I thought the voice talent did a pretty good job. I was most impressed with the CGI animation as the backgrounds and such for the most part looked REAL! The way the people were animated combined with the ultra realistic surroundings really made this movie pop out.

The story was obviously silly but it had some really funny moments for both kids AND adults IMO. Oh and one last thing, even in animated form Mr. T is BAD ARSE!

Probably not too close to the real thing, knowing how these sorts of movies usually go, but it was a good movie, nonetheless.

Not really close though there's definitely similarities. It's more inspired by a true story rather than based on it. Here's the trivia tidbit regarding that on IMDB:

The film is inspired by the "Crazy Eights" unmanned train incident in 2001. The train, led by CSX Transportation SD40-2 #8888, left its Walbridge, Ohio, rail yard and began a 66-mile (106 km) journey through northwest Ohio with no one at the controls, after the engineer got out of the originally slow-moving train to correctly line a switch, mistakenly believing he had properly set the train's dynamic braking system, just as his counterpart in the movie did. Two of the real train's tank cars also contained thousands of gallons of molten phenol, similar to the fictional train in the film.
Basically everything after the train goes out of control is likely fictionalized or exaggerated to the hilt.

Just saw Scream 4. After having to watch 1-3 back to back to back with my GF who had never seen them. I liked 4. Its either equal to or ahead of 2 all time IMO. Its strange. I remember being 14 or 15 sneaking into Scream. Not that I'm 29 its funny to think the first one came out 15 years ago. Getting old.

I did think the opening was a bit silly. Got a good laugh though. I also thought the acting that seemed the most natural to me was Hayden P's. While it seemed like some were struggling or trying to hard she just seemed to be at ease and stole scenes left and right.

Pretty entertaining movie. James and Vaughn are good together. Vaughn though, pretty much plays the part he plays in all his movies; the sarcastic good guy.

It was more drama than comedy but still a fun watch

                                Thunderbolt (1995)

This is one of Jackie Chan's movies from his Hong Kong days. Here's the summary:

Jackie plays Foh, an expert mechanic who has returned from Japan after a master course at Mitsubishi Motors. He runs a small business in Hong Kong along with his father and two sisters. In his spare time, he also helps the police out by checking cars that have been illegally upgraded. One night, psychotic street racing driver Warner Krugerman, aka Cougar, speeds past Foh and the cops. Foh gets into a car and stops Cougar heroically. Cougar lands in jail, but breaks out eventually. He gets revenge on Foh by trashing his business and kidnapping his sisters. The only way Foh can get his sisters back is by racing cougar in Japan. He now must retrain himself in race car driving so he can be at his best to race Cougar.
As you can tell this is not your typical Jackie Chan beat-em-up movie and while it's a nice change of pace it doesn't quite work for a couple reasons. One big reason why this didn't work is that during the fight scenes the camera work isn't the best and the use of the slow-mo camera technique that was in vogue especially in HK cinema at the time really dates this movie badly. That being said the fight scene in the Casino is really good stuff as Jackie literally fights off at LEAST 20 guys and completely wrecking the casino in the process. There's also a real good escape/gun fight scene when Cougar's gang breaks him out of jail that would make any action fan proud.

The other thing that kinda puts this movie down a peg or two is that there just wasn't ENOUGH action. There's only 2 big fight scenes and that gunfight/escape scene. This isn't what people signed up for when watching a Jackie Chan flick. I didn't quite mind that myself but for fans of Chan it's definitely a bit disappointing.

The car racing and stunts involved with that were pretty good. I really liked the chase scene between Cougar and Chan's character Foh. In fact the racing overall was pretty damn good.

So this is probably a renter and fits squarely in the ** range though for me i put it at ** 1/2 for the effort and change of pace from the usual.
