Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Not going to review anything because they're both really old creaky movies but I do want to mention a couple things (i'll put the name of the movie associated with the actors I mentioned that I watched just for research for you guys) that I thought would be worth noting.

      - Cesar Romero (Dangerously Yours 1937) is best known today for playing the Joker on the '60s Batman TV show which is great but I really think he could've been something a bit more meaningful in the movie business. He was not unlike Anthony Quinn as they both started their careers playing stereotypical ethnic roles but unlike Quinn Romero never fully broke out until much too late. Romero was mostly in B grade movies while Quinn was able to bust out of that ghetto sooner and was able to get into some big time movies. It's a shame because I think Romero had the same kind of charisma on screen that Quinn had though Romero lacked that hint of danger that Quinn could portray very well. That's possibly one reason for Romero never really breaking out into being something bigger.

He was pretty good and charming in this movie which had its fair share of twists and turns as it involved him secretly
      Spoiler
. It's one of those movies you have to pay attention to to get the full effect of it.

      - The other actors of note I want to talk about are Glenda Farrell and Lyle Talbot. I don't know if I mentioned this on here or on another site but Talbot was a guy who just about took any role he could get while Farrell was a pretty well known star in the '30s. Here we see them in a PRC film (A Poverty Row studio) in 1943 called A Night For Crime. Some Poverty Row films can be entertaining in their own way but PRC tended to have very boring scripts however this was an exception and while they were treading on a plot that was popular a decade ago (fast talking character who solves a crime despite being hounded by inept cops) it moved along at a brisk pace. The script wasn't even all that funny but this is what I wanted to talk about, the two old pros in Talbot and Farrell took lines that didn't work on paper and made them amusing and lended a credibility to the movie that wouldn't be there if others were in the lead. It just goes to show that sometimes junk can be elevated with the right personnel.

BTW I give the Romero flick 2 stars and the latter flick 1 1/2.

GENERAL NOTE: I will be going through the western genre for a bit and supplementing it with other material which will be more modern. Some will be movies recently released but the vast majority will likely be movies from the '80s.

I watched Resident Evil: Retribution, as a RE fan I couldn't even finish it, a very bad film for the franchise's sake as well as in general.

I recently bought the Coen brothers collection and decided to watch Raising Arizona and Fargo last night. I thought Raising Arizona was a funny and clever film and Nic Cage was actually good in it. You don't get to say that very often. Fargo holds up very well and is a great movie. The plot was great and the character and actors were top notch.

I watched Doom on Blu-ray this afternoon. Wasn't bad. Was hoping to hear some music from the game incorporated into the movie. The 5 minute first person shooter scene was really well done though.

Get Shorty - Lots of smart-aleck humor, and that's a great thing.John Travolta is very funny in it, and so is the guy who plays Bones. Lots offoul language, but it adds to the bluntness of some of the really good jokes, and I've seen more vulgar films (for example, I'll likely be watching Die Hard again later...), so there are worse movies in that regard. I recommend it.

Saw Jack Reacher this morning and thought it was pretty good, story wasnt bad and all seemed put together well for the most part. If I had to rate it Id give it a solid 7/10, maybe 8.

Premium Rush - You wouldn't expect a movie about bike messengers to be very good but I thought this was awesome.

For starters, it was nice to watch a movie that was a pretty fresh idea and not another reboot, remake, superhero, romcom, etc, movie. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was as good as you'd expect and at this point I think I could watch him in literally any movie and be satisfied with it.

The movie itself really stood out to me visually, especially being set in NYC. There was some cool camera work, good chase scenes and there's something strangely entertaining about watching a bike weave in, out and around traffic.

I don't think this has been a movie that's been talked about very much but it's definitely worth a watch. Probably one of the better movies I've seen this year.

                        Marley (2012)

Hey look! A movie made this year, well actually a documentary. This was the finished product of what would've been a Martin Scorsese project but as it was, the production was fraught with many problems. Scorsese left, another guy took over but left halfway through the production due to editing conflicts and so it was left to Kevin MacDonald to pick up the pieces along with working with friends, family and associates to get this thing out.

This was VERY good though not infallible for one thing, the film seems to imply that Marley discovered and popularized reggae which is just absurd on the face of it. The only other weakness to the film is the fact that they don't go into the actual production and genesis of some of Marley's greatest songs. This was more of an A to B progression of his life from birth to death which is fine but I would've liked a little more talk about the music and how it all came about.

Despite those failings I thought it was at least an honest and frank look at the man. Knowing so many of his peers worked on this project I was a bit afraid that they would whitewash some of the negatives about him but even though they don't press the issue too much (I would've appreciated a more blunt approach at times) they at least address some of his political leanings and the fact that he had so many women whom he had relations with and sired children. There was also a segment that dealt with Bob's estrangement from the "white" side of his family and in fact you get a couple people from his father's side of the family speak about how they related to him. They even had them listen to a song Bob wrote that addressed his feeling of rejection from that side of the family which looked rather uncomfortable for those two.

Of course, any documentary about Bob Marley is going to have a ton of footage and playing of his music. The music really carries the film and seeing some never before seen footage of the man in action was pretty neat to see. I also have to admit I got a bit melancholy towards the end when they were focusing on Bob's last year or so on this world. He looked so frail and unhappy it was very sad to watch.

The movie is pretty long (2 hrs 24 mins) but is well worth viewing. I give this 4 stars out of 5.

I really meant to give this a watch when it came out at the movies, but for some reason I just never got around to it. Thanks for reminding me.

Anyway, just watched Get the Gringo on Netflix. I tend to like Mel Gibson movies and this wasn't an exception. Pretty cool flick.

Much better then No Strings Attached, and not just because of Mila Kunis obviously. JT and Mila were good together, but Woody Harrelson and the dad from Step Brothers were great too.
