Steve Jobs. I thought this blew Jobs away and in general was just a great dramatic movie. Seemed perfectly casted as well. I hesitated seeing it at first after seeing Jobs month ago, but it's incredibly different. I thought that the way they captured the tension during the intense arguments was production genius, especially during one scene that I won't mention as it may take away from your experience. I think this is a must see.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Eyewitness (1981)
This was part of a cycle of movies in the early '80s that had a plot point with an obsessive guy mooning over someone. (though not necessarily stalking) This one tries to be creative but it becomes muddled and the villain is rather "out of nowhere" to some degree. The film boasts a fine starring cast of William Hurt, Sigourney Weaver and Christopher Plummer with a sizable role for a young James Woods. The basic thrust of the story is that Hurt is a janitor who works in the building where a shady Vietnamese man operates his business. He later discovers the man killed and the cops are on the case as they have two suspects, Hurt and his weird friend with a vendetta against the Vietnamese man. (Woods) In fact, for most of the movie everyone thinks Woods is the one that did it!
Anywho, Hurt sees Weaver, a TV reporter who he has a major crush on and whom he's fixated on to the point that he tapes and watches her newscasts. He fibs a bit and lets on that he knows more about what happened that night in order to keep her around in his life. This is where the movie gets a bit muddled as Weaver is involved with Plummer who's a rich guy who does some rather shady things in order to get Jewish people out of Russia. (I think, again it's all very muddled) Anyways, the film gets bogged down in a few plot points that seem to be hastily thought out. Weaver and Hurt have a bit of a relationship but it turns out she was only using him to find out more about the murder and when she decides he really doesn't know anything she breaks it off with him but at the same time the Vietnamese man's associates had bugged her (or Hurt, it isn't clear) and wants her so that she can tell who killed their boss.
Then there's James Woods and his story, I can't make heads or tails of it. I think somehow Hurt is engaged to his sister or something(?) and he wants Hurt to marry her so that he can have something akin to a normal life. Hurt's father is a complete a-hole which makes for a dysfunctional family. Apparently the girl that Hurt was to marry doesn't even love him and he doesn't love her! Again, i'm sure you can tell i'm struggling with this because the movie has a million different things going on. The problem boils down to the script written by Steve Tesich. He was working on two separate scripts and wasn't happy with either. Director Peter Yates suggested combining both scripts into one and this is the mess we're left with.
Despite all this, it's somewhat understandable when you sit down and watch the movie but it really doesn't have a focus. It either should've been about a maladjusted stalkerish guy or a murder thriller. There's no way it should've been combined. That being said, Hurt, Weaver and Woods are excellent in their roles. I just wish the script was more cohesive. Plummer is wastedSpoilerand somehow HE'S the murderer! In fact, he tries to kill Hurt because he thinks Hurt knows it was him. When it's discovered that Hurt really didn't know Weaver's parents who help Plummer in his job of rescuing Jews try to buy Hurt's silence but Plummer bypasses him and sets up a trap so that he could kill Hurt!
I give this ** mainly for the acting of Hurt and Weaver.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

The Big Short. Another well casted movie. Steve Carrell really shows a great expanse in his acting ability through this one. Everyone else is good, but for me Carrell is a notch above. The context of the movie is rather depressing when you really examine it. It's sad to think our country did/does/can operate like this or somewhat like this.Comment

Watched Goosebumps last night.
Really enjoyed it, yes it was campy and corny at times, but I thought Black and the main guy character did a great job. Nostalgia played a role probably, but I still found myself chuckling at some of the jokes and plot pointsCharger Fan Born and Raised!

Unfriended.
Cool concept. Like the unique way it was filmed. The story itself, idk. The motivations felt a bit hollow but maybe it fell flat for me because I'm not the target demo. I'm more a fan of Scream where it's based in more reality/plausibility where as Final Destination is a little more mythical/magic powers. This movie fell in the latter and it was a bit of a let down to be honest. That's personal preference though. This format did raise tension a whole lot and I enjoyed it.
Movie completely failed on making a social commentary on cyber bullying. Which I found odd given the subject of the film.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I watched No Way Out (1987) recently. I gotta say, this was a pretty damn good political thriller. It doesn't hurt that this was before Costner was more style over substance in his acting and the story was based on the classic film The Big Clock (1948). The basic plot has Costner investigating the murder of the Secretary of State's mistress when all evidence makes it look like he's the one that did it.
Again, the intrigue and sense of tension engendered by the well written script makes this a very enjoyable film that keeps your interest. Gene Hackman who plays the Secretary of State is quite good but Will Patton steals the show as the bastard, homosexual underling of Hackman who puts the coverup in motion and will do anything to keep Hackman's name clean.
Solid film and one well worth viewing if you run into it.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

The Big Short.
I thought it was an exceptional and informative movie. I liked the way they got some of the points across with cameos.
This is the first movie I have watched by myself in a theater. It turned out to be a pretty good decision for a week night and empty theater. Admission on base for movies is usually $3 and midnight movies are free.
I struggle to find personal space in my life and I'll definitely be doing the movies alone thing again soon.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
The Martian.
Had a lot of hype going into it. It was a good movie, reminded me of a dumbed down Apollo 13, and more like Armageddon. Filled with all the cliches in the book, but still enjoyable. The graphics, vast amount of actual space and mars display was pretty fantastic as well.
I wouldn't watch it again, and I don't think it's worthy of winning any Oscars, I may be in the minority here though.Comment
