I was wondering what that movie is like because the commercials make it look like some Tim Burtonesque nightmare. (Yes I know Sam Raimi directed this) Hm, just looked at IMDB and 130 minutes...Oye that's a bit long.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Oh I know, just seems a little long for a film about Oz. I've noticed the trend in movies of running times creeping back up to the 2 hr mark as about a decade ago there were tons of movies that hovered barely around the 1hr 30m mark. This is a good development IMO btw.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
It did feel a little long at times, because though they went out of their way to show the land of OZ. Meaning, all the beautiful CGI they put in of course.
Yes it's a prequel.
I thought it was funny and actually had a lot of action near the end (albeit cheesy at times)Charger Fan Born and Raised!

Oz The Great and Powerful
Wife and I saw this today. Absolutely fantastic movie. I loved it. James Franco was great as Oz. The whole story, scenery, everything was great about it. Highly recommend. As was said though, be wary of taking kids. The flying monkeys could be scary for them. This will be a first day Blu-ray purchase for me when it is released. I can only imagine how beautiful this movie will look in Full 1080p glory.Comment

Unconditional with Lynn Collins and Michael Ealy. This movie was amazing! It hit theaters back in September, but didn't have a big enough buzz, so it didn't last long. It came out on DVD this week. It's on Amazon for $10. I highly recommend it.Originally posted by J. ColeFool me one time that's shame on you. Fool me twice can't put the blame on you. The Thing from Another World (1951)
John Carpenter's The Thing (1982)
Well...This is "Good News, Bad News". I really liked the original flick but the Carpenter version while interesting in its framing, left me totally cold. The original film had a good camaraderie between the characters and the one character that was kind of portrayed as the heavy (Dr. Stern) had good intentions from the standpoint of "Science!".
I also thought the original had a far better feeling of claustrophobia as all the characters were stuck in their base while a monster is literally lurking around ready to kill them all. I will say that the acting in the original left a bit to be desired but there was an enthusiasm that overcame that. I also felt that for a movie made in the '50s there was a sense of realism with the dialogue as there'd be overlapping dialogue between different characters which is quite realistic.
The monster was pretty laughable in appearance but i found out that it was portrayed by James Arness of all people! So yeah, this is a classic of the sci-fi genre and held my attention
3 out of 4 stars
The remake just felt too gory for its own good. I did like the idea of the monster being a parasite rather than some vegetative life form. The framing device used in this movie was really good as the implication that the Norwegian base that got decimated by the monster was the group from the original film. (or a reasonable facsimile thereof) The actual story in the film was pretty good. I mean the premise was very strong and the level of distrust from the people in the base was palpable and justified. It's just that the gore was a little too much whereas I think it could've been better served being a more psychological film rather than having some horror elements.
2 out of 4 stars. (mainly on the strength of the story and framing of said story)

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
SPTO -- the original The Thing stood as my favorite classic type monster movie for quite some time. And your observation of the chatter and banter between the crew is what I thought had always set this aside from the other cheesy 50's type monster movies. I had learned later that it didn't keep to the original story at all, but I never minded that. It had some shots which made it look like some type of "real" footage of a UFO discovery, like when they outlined the actual size and shape of the ship.
Side trivia note: George Fetterman plays a support role. Fetterman was Groucho Marx's assistant on the long running "You Bet Your Life" game show.Comment

Top Gun (3D) Already loved the movie. 3D was good in most places.
The Man with the Iron Fists Decent story. Loved all the cameos. Action scenes and soundtrack were good. And yeah, Jamie Chung is hot.Comment
