    On "scary" movies...

What IS scary?(in regards to film)
    Seriously.
    Nothing.
    Real life can be scary...

These are films. Are you really "scared" by films?

The Ring came out when I was 14, and was the first film to literally mind-rape me. It was a subconscious thing, though. Had bad dreams. It's scarring images that scare me the most, I guess. No other film has done that to me. If Sinister wasn't a film regarding the supernatural, I think that would have freaked me out for a while too (some scarring images there too, if you will).

Films like Saw and Buried make me question what I would do or how I would feel in the situations of the victims. Paranormal Activity has been awesome because of the subtleties (you can't even see the thing that's doing things to them and you can sense it getting more pissed off as time elapses).

The rest of the movies, unless they're based on true stories with actual evidence, shouldn't be scary to anyone with a maturated subconscious. Yes, scenes can make people jump and what not, but legitimate scares are hard to come by these days. Foreign films scare me for some reason (like The Orphanage), but I think it's the nature of the film being foreign like I believe that stuff exists in those countries in that way. But that movie is damn good anyway and super deceiving, so those who are into horror films should totally check that out.

I don't go for "scary movies" so i'm the wrong person to answer this but I do think that one thing that a "scary" movie can do well is make the viewer super uncomfortable or wonder what they would do in the situation depicted in the film. I think some of the best horror type movies are films that leave you with the feeling that something like what's in the film could be happen and be upsetting.

I think slashers and "jump" films go for the blood and guts at the expense of setting a mood and making the viewer truly care about the characters involved.

Back in the 1980s, The Exorcist movie scared me. But then that was probably was due to it was the first in its kind type of movie.

Yeah...still too chicken to see that one. lol

A slight twist on this conversation...what movies have you seen that are nearly 'mean' to their audience? Like, really wrenching or pissed you off with how they end?

Two examples of movies that I felt were just mean:

            --Sweet November

            --Pay it Forward

            --A.I. came pretty close, too.

Morley and Me. Previews led me to believe it was some kind of light hearted comedy. Figured it would make for the perfect date movie. Then I'm sitting there watching about to curl up in a ball on my set and let the floodgates open.

How am I supposed to show her how manly I am when that happens. I'll forever hate the studio behind the film for doing that to me.

                  Moneyball.

Hollywood couldn't even get the A's a ring that year. If the film isn't going to mention Hudson Mulder Zito then why not just flub history a bit.

A.I. is it for me. Far too many different endings. I can understand maybe 2 endings but it's like Spielberg didn't know how to end the movie and threw every ending he had in mind and said "screw it, let the people decide which ending they like best".

Well after the 'first' ending with the blue fairy underwater and the slow camera pull-away, my eyes were wet and I was about ready to chuck something at the screen. However sad, though, that ending was logical.

But wait! There's more....aliens! And he 'dies' AGAIN!

                      Wanted to punch Spielberg.

Regarding "scary" movies... the only ones that legitimately scare me are movies like The Strangers that are very realistic. Not so much the movie itself, but imagining that situation happening to me.

I won't spoil the movie for anyone that hasn't seen it, but I could absolutely see a scenario like that occurring and that's what freaks me out about it.
