Just watched The Big Short. Absolutely loved it. Did everything right for me, no cliche's, no wasted film. Kept the tone humorous and serious at the same time, while literally teaching the viewer on complicated Wall-Street terms.

Highly recommended, Oscar worthy? Definitely. To win Best Picture? I've only watched The Martian to compare, so if it was a faceoff of those two, then yes, The Big Short wins.

      Zootopia

I thought it was hilarious and a lot of fun. The kids will love it, the animals were adorable.

        Around The Bend (2004)

I found this gem years ago. I think it's poorly named, but I love the cast. It's more of a drama with comedic interludes. Josh Lucas plays a single dad who has been balancing taking care of his eccentric grandfather (Michael Caine) and his young boy. Their lives get turned around when Lucas father (played by Christopher Walken) suddenly re-enters his life after 30+ years. The fragmentations are clearly there, but Caine devises a way to help the family mend and re-discover who they are.

Not sure why this movie got lower ratings on IMDB. This has a great blend of performances, quirky humor and melodrama. The addition of Glenne Headley as the grandfather's nurse was a welcome comedic element. I love the soundtrack as well which features two of my favorite Leon Russell tunes. Walken even does one of his classic verbalizations at one point, almost as if he is characterizing himself.

Any guy in a family of guys will appreciate and enjoy this one.

          Experiment in Terror (1962)

If you think Blake Edwards was only good at making comedy (the Pink Panther movies etc etc) than you HAVE to watch this film. The movie has Lee Remick as a bank employee who's being manipulated by an unknown asthmatic guy to steal money from the bank for him. She's warned not to call the police but does so, the asthmatic allows this one "mistake" to teach her a lesson that he means business. The FBI man on the other end of the line played by Glenn Ford is a persistent one and actually gets in contact with her. So the rest of the film sees Remick trying to follow the bad guy's plan while working with Ford to capture said bad guy.

The movie is done in gorgeous B&W with noir touches. In fact, the opening scene when Remick is held captive by the guy wearing leather gloves and his heavy breathing is pretty disturbing. The way the lighting and the positioning of the camera was done made it feel strangely erotic yet disturbing at the same time. It was a pretty tough scene to watch (though tame by today's standards) Here's a screenshot that gives you a sense for it:

Anyways, this is an extremely well done movie that is "adult" in the best sense of the word. The script is tight, the dialogue is well done and the characters are fleshed out really well. I especially liked the small role of the newspaper reporter who had crucial information on the case.

What movies have you seen recently?

I have recently seen Bone Tomahawk, Hateful 8 and The Witch.

Bone Tomahawk is a real slow cooker. It takes it's sweet time getting going. But the acting is superb by the 4 main principles and especially by Richard Jenkins. If you stay with it, it is worth the time.

Hateful 8 was, IMO, minor Tarantino. I thought it was the weakest of all of his films except Death Proof. The acting is strong as usual but Q needs to try something new. I was not overly impressed with the plot or even the dialogue, which is unusual for a QT movie.

The Witch is something altogether different. It is NOT the movie it is being marketed as. It is not a straight up horror movie nor is it very scary. It is a movie about a Puritan family that runs afoul of evil and what it does to the family psychology for the most part. The acting is top notch and the story is fine. It's a rather good movie. But if you go in expecting the horror masterpiece it is being touted as, you will likely be disappointed.

              .
I guess i'll have to give this movie a shot. I heard there's some supernatural elements to it? Usually i'm not a big fan of mixing in other genres into westerns but the acting is pretty good from what I hear from you and others.

I would not say there are supernatural elements. The troglodyte baddies are not based on anything real as far as I can tell but I wouldn't call them supernatural. You do have to suspend belief more than a couple of times, but it is just an entertaining movie after all.

Sounds like my kind of horror film then. The psychological types tend to stick with me longer than the "scary" ones.

I had the total opposite take. It was slow to a fault and the dialogue was indifferent and at times just outright inane. I suppose it's one of those polarizing movies, but I don't think it'll help Russell's legacy.

I'm with you, I thought the movie was incredibly bad. Slow and boring, which led to me not caring about any of the characters because every scene and conversation felt like it was dragging on.

Watched a couple "Horror/Suspense" movies over the weekend.

The Purge:Anarchy: Pretty good movie. I like the concept. One day a year all crime is legal. They give everyone plenty of warning, but &*^% happens and next thing they know, they are about to get purged. I liked this one better than the first. The first one was about one family and how they were keeping people out and surviving the night. This one was about people who ended up caught in the city when the purge started.

New Daughter: It had Kevin Costner in it so I thought I'd watch it. Pretty lame and not really suspenseful or scary.

Love both Purges but I agree, 2nd is much better. Can't wait for the 3rd one.

Watch Bone Tomahawk and I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. I was kinda disturbed at the end, the tribe freaked me out.

I don't see how they won't be making a few more of these movies. I think the last one cost 12 million and they grossed close to 100 million.
