That's not to mean that some won't like it. I think this film is for a very specific type of person. You have to really be into witch lore and fairy tales. Not Snow White, but the old-school, traditional fairy tales that were very grim and focused on personal sins and the evil spirits that will haunt you for them.
My biggest problem with the movie is that I didn't feel it was scary or suspenseful in the least. It was really quite boring. I kept waiting for it to pick up the pace, but it never did.
It's like it's in first gear for the whole movie, but will slide into neutral for long stretches as well.
If you're interested in it at all, wait for it to come out on video or the movie networks for free.
You're definitely not going to miss anything not seeing it in a large theatre atmosphere.

The Loft - This movie came out last year with little fanfare.
It's about 5 rich, middle-aged dudes who share a loft to keep their affairs discreet.
Then a dead body is found one morning. Things unravel at that point as the story becomes a classic Who Done It.
Really liked this movie. It's on Netflix right now.
Saw the Witch as well. It was horrifically marketed. That was not and should not have ever been sold as a horror or even a scary movie. It was a period piece and it's main goal was to inspire anxiety rather than fear from pulling the viewer into it's world and relying on them to feel what it would be like to be in that situation. I loved it, but more because I am a historian and the camera shots and cinematography did an excellent job of using wide sustained shots to pull me into the world of the movie. Combine that with the fact that it was phenomenally acted and I was able to feel the fear and despair of what it would be like in that situation and I thought it was an excellent "film". All except the last scene. That I absolutely hated.

Now as far as what I was expecting and wanting to see I would have rather spent my money to go to Deadpool a second time or even seen Triple 9. When I went to see it I was in the mood for a "fun" movie and to exactly your point I see movies in the theater atmosphere for a reason. This was not a movie that needs to be seen in the theater. Although the wide angle shots are enhanced by the theater experience they will by no means be lost when transferred to home media. And do not go see this movie if you are expecting a horror movie or as I said even a scary movie. It's something else entirely. It's a scary version of the Revenant where the antagonist is supernatural and nature rather than human and nature.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

I had a movie marathon last night but two movies I want to give a shout out to.

Coffy (1973) Hooo boy! Pam Grier was hot as hell back in the day! This was her first starring role and while i'm no expert in blaxploitation movies I felt this was a weaker film in the genre but Grier pushes it up a notch with her presence. Check out the gangster boss in this flick as he's a real scumbag but Arturo Arbus was actually quite watchable. I could watch a whole film with his character. He was that good IMO.

Breakheart Pass (1975) A great mish mash of genres in a lot of ways. This film when released was favorably compared to a couple Agatha Christie novels but it's also ostensibly a western. Going into detail would give away too much but let's just say that not everyone is what they seem on a trip to Fort Humboldt to deliver medical supplies to ward off a breakout of disease. Charles Bronson is at his best here but unlike a lot of his other movies the supporting cast is just as good. Ed Lauter does a great job as a major whose trying to keep things together and get the job done. The movie is probably best known for a fight on top of the train between Bronson and former boxer Archie Moore. In fact, they did that scene themselves rather than using stuntmen which is just mindboggling to me considering at one point the train goes over a ravine. This is a pretty awesome movie that unlike most movies based on books, the writer of said book had a big hand in it by writing the script himself.

I agree with everyone else on this, The Purge: Anarchy was a pretty good movie.
Better than the first one, and kept me intrigued through out.

Even had a shocking couple points that I didn't see coming

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

A couple film noirs to recommend to those who are interested in the genre:

Criss Cross (1949) Burt Lancaster is a love obsessed ex husband of Yvonne De Carlo (Lilly Munster is what she's best known for playing) who tries to win her love back by planning an armored truck heist with her gangster husband (Dan Duryea, one of the great baddies of classic Hollywood) and things don't go as planned.

Where The Sidewalk Ends (1950) Awesome police/crime oriented noirs that sees Dana Andrews as a hate fueled cop who goes over the line and puts him in a world of trouble. Lots of great acting here and while the ending was expected, there was an aspect of it that I didn't quite like but oh well, can't be perfect. This flick is class all the way with the great Otto Preminger directing.

Wow, fantastic movie. Brie Larson got the Oscar but honestly Jacob Tremblay who played Jack was phenomenal and was the star of the movie. He should have honestly got a nomination and is one of the best child performances I ever seen.

It was hard to watch at times because of the emotion and situation but the acting, story, directing and cinematography were fantastic. Just going through everything in the eyes of a 5 year old was something I never experienced in a movie.

Hyena Road. Well, I wanted to like this more. Got real intense in the second part, but the production value overall had some lacking to it. Seemed somewhat disjunct as well. Worth a look though.

Wanna see 10 Cloverfield Lane next.

Thought Zootopia was pretty funny. Our 9 year old really enjoyed it. I knew nothing about this movie going in including who the voice actors were. I was convinced Chief Bogo was Chris Hemsworth (It was Idris Elba) and Clawhauser (the cheetah) was Josh Gad (It was Nate Torrence).
