I think Caan was one of those guys where he can't be the anchor for a major production but put him in a gritty, down to earth dramatic film and he does perfectly well as a leading man. Caan would've been very successful in the old Hollywood system days IMO packaged in the mold of a Bogart or Cagney. That being said, he did have some really good leading roles such as The Gambler, Freebie and the Bean, The Killer Elite and Hide in Plain Sight all movies that reinforces my point that "smaller" more grittier productions were more in his wheelhouse.

Hello, My Name is Doris
How can you not like Sally Field in just about anything? She was really good in this. Had what I would say is one extremely funny moment, with the rest being fairly light-hearted. Max Greenfield (you know him as Schmidt in New Girl) was largely the straight man. He had one "Schmidt" moment during the film. Good date movie. In the mid-80's on Rotten Tomatoes if that matter to you.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I recall that title but don't think I've seen it. I think Hollyweird was expecting Caan to be a bigger star than he panned out to be. I think Rollerball was supposed to put him over the top, but it just wasn't all that good in execution. Always liked Caan in a support role though.
I could never figure out Caan. He seemed liked a solid leading man, but the box office numbers weren't there. Then again if he didn't pass on Star Wars I think his career would have turned out better. Superman was the right movie to pass on. That would have been a disaster.
Bottom line he was a good actor who could go only so far, even after the tremendous thrust that Godfather gave him.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I think Alien Nation (a movie a bit ahead of its time) was supposed to propel him too, but it just never caught on despite a TV spin off. Misery was good too, but let's face it; we watched that movie for Kathy Bates. And of course, there was Brian's Song (no, I am NOT crying). Respectable career w/ 1 Oscar nomination.
Interesting opening paragraph on IMDB:
A masculine and enigmatic actor whose life and movie career have had more ups and downs than the average rollercoaster and whose selection of roles has arguably derailed him from achieving true superstar status, James Caan is New York-born and bred.Comment

The IMBD paragraph sums it up pretty good.
Misery was a showcase for Bates, but Caan's stature and performance in the film should have given him at least a poor man's Oscar (Golden Globe) nomination.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
The Contender is a very good political flick that looks at the congressional infighting when the sudden death of the current vice president forces the president (Jeff Bridges) to choose a nominee. The "contender" (Joan Allen) happens to be the potential first female vice president in US history, but runs into many hurdles to get confirmed.
The 25th Amendment has been used twice in real life in the appointment of a new vice president. Both Gerald Ford (1973) and Nelson Rockefeller (1974) were confirmed handily, particularly Ford.
On a superficial note Joan Allen has certainly gone down in the looks department, although 15 years and possible plastic surgery can take it's toll.

MGM channel again, "On Her Majesty's Secret Service". Huge Bond fan, but I don't get the hate for Lazenby in this. Sure Connery leaving left big shoes to fill, but OHMSS is one of my favorite Bond movies. Diana Rigg is one of the best Bond girls as well. That and one of my favorite actors, Telly Savalas is Blowfeld.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I like On Her Majestys SS more than all of Roger Moore's except The Spy Who Loved Me, all but Goldeneye for Brosnan, and both Dalton films.
I still prefer all Craig and Connery films, just because they are the best Bonds though.Last edited by CC; 05-18-2016, 10:58 AM.Comment

Moore gets too hokey for me. Spy Who Loved me, For Your Eyes Only are my two favorite Moore movies.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Moore indeed can get too hokey but he did one of my top 5 Bond films ever with The Spy Who Loved me so I can't fault him on that.
My absolute favorite Bond films though are OHMSS and Skyfall.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club
