Re: What movies have you seen recently?
One of those "nothing good on" days.
One channel is airing Titanic so I just decided to watch parts of it.
That final hour+ of the movie is still so sad/dramatic.
I remember the first time I saw it, I knew partially how it ended, but I was under the impression it was violent waters and while the ship was sinking, Jack got sucked underwater in sudden and dramatic fashion.Last edited by Majingir; 02-14-2021, 03:35 PM.Comment

John Carpenter is very hit or miss, but when he hits I enjoy it. Long as it isn't Ghosts of Mars.Comment

Deadpool
This was fun and funny. Certainly entertaining for two hours or however long it was. I'd say it's firmly middle ground as far as super hero movies go and I am always down to support Morena Baccarin. Honestly, I think my favorite "joke" was the bonus scene. Action was fun overall, but hoping DP2 goes a little bit more inventive with it. Did Angel Dust die or what, though? I saw Colossus carrying her and Teenage Warhead, but that's the last I saw of her. Not that Gina was particularly good. It felt like she was doing her best to keep from smirking in every scene. Oh well. Reynolds is great for this role and I loved all the Wolverine punches.
Amistad
The only "serious" film of Spielberg's I have seen is Saving Private Ryan so I've never seen this nor Schindler's List (though I hope to rectify that sometime this year). My main interest in this was from reading W.E.B. Du Bois' Black Reconstruction in America: 1860 - 1880 and him briefly mentioning the insurrection and ship. Anyway - I guess comparatively speaking this is pretty standard fare all things considered. The cast is good to great with Anthony Hopkins carrying much of the heft in the final 20 minutes. Matthew McConaughey is mostly serviceable, but not nearly as memorable as his other roles apart from looking like a baby in this. Djimon Hounsou is fantastic and carries the movie until JQ Adams provides service at the end. Chiwetel Ejiofor apparently never ages. Overall there's some bloat with trying to cover too many bases and the teasing of Civil War every two minutes felt heavy-handed. Still, it's a great movie despite its short list of flaws or missteps.

The Mule
I just love Clint Eastwood, I don’t think I have seen anything he’s done that I didn’t like.
I saw people online were disappointed because the trailer made it out to be a suspenseful movie which it’s not, it’s a slow burn movie. It’s a simple plot but as usual, Clint is fantastic.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
The Avengers
10/10
This is actually just the 2nd time that I've seen this, with the first obviously being opening night at the theaters nearly 10 years ago. It still holds up. The movie is honestly perfect in both it's stand alone execution and how it set the stage for not only the 4 Avengers movies, but also the the various standalone films. The entire time that I was watching it I kept having flashbacks to Endgame which was kind of bittersweet.
Great movie. Maybe I'll finally go down the rabbit hole of rewatching the MCU. I think that Iron Man 1 is the only MCU movie that I've seen multiple times.Comment

Widows (4/5)
Watched this to see some more Kaluuya after Judas and the Black Messiah, I really liked this movie. Cool directing, a lot of really cool looking motion scenes following cars. For some people, being unable to get their franchise out of my mind hurts them, but it always helps Letty because she's always Letty.
Avengers Age of Ultron (2/5)
Probably one of the few MCU movies I haven't seen multiple times already, I think this is only my second watch. I didn't think very much of it the first time, I still don't. It's not bad, just not super remarkable. I remember how hype I was hearing the Wakanda and vibranium shout outs, good times.
Alien (8/5)
I like but don't love Blade Runner, but it has always stood out to me as one of the best looking movies I'd ever seen. Watching the DC of Alien on blu-ray, I think this has to be up there too. There are gorgeous shots all over the place, but the one that stood out to me was Ripley with the flamethrower during the escape walking down the hallway with the lights flashing, you can't take your eyes off the screen and she's just walking. Just a masterpiece, one of my favorites. Chestburster never gets old.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
We had our three nieces this past week (good Lort I have not known such fatigue) so got some movie time in with them. Its a little bit exciting showing them a movie that is cherished from your childhood (or in this case my wife's) for the first time. Plus, none of us had seen the last movie on this list:
Labyrinth
David. Bowie's. Bulge. Anyway, this is a twisted fantasy tale with some truly memorable puppets from Jim Henson. Jennifer Connelly is fantastic in this considering she was fourteen or fifteen during filming. The cast of puppets are charming. The music overall is OK - the only real memorable tune for me is Chilly Down and that scene is just bizarre to say the ****ing least. The kids absolutely loved it.
Hocus Pocus
Yabbos. There's some serious breast fixation in this movie. Anyway, I've seen this a lot more times than I ever wanted to, but Bette Midler's dry delivery gets better to me with each viewing. The story doesn't really make any sense and I typically check out about halfway through, but for a once a year viewing (typically) its serviceable.
My Neighbor Totoro
This was as nearly flawless as I have seen from an animated movie. The artwork is incredible throughout particularly the "still shots" for transitions and beginning of scenes. It certainly creates a space in your head for an idyllic Japanese country-side that is capable of magical whimsy in the giant shape of a furry forest spirit. The story was fantastic. I've grown up with too many Disney movies because I kept waiting for the rug to be pulled out. The English cast (I believe this was the 2005 version) was great - especially the children (the two Fanning sisters). All of us absolutely adored this film and I really need to go through all of Studio Ghibli's offerings as a result.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I watched The Dig on Netflix recently, it was pretty good. Slow, elegant sort of movie, about what I expected. It's about the discovery of this amazing Anglo-Saxon ship burial in East Anglia on the eve of WWII. I actually still have my own personal photographs of the treasure finds from The British Museum from when I lived in England in '06-'07. They didn't include the famous helmet in the movie though, which surprised me.
Plus, I love Carey Mulligan and she's in this.Comment

Anyone check out Unhinged on Netflix? I've never been much of a fan of Russell Crowe but he was excellent in this. He plays a mentally unstable guy who lets say has quite a bit of road rage.Comment
