Re: What movies have you seen recently?

I've been pretty bad at watching movies over the years, tons and tons of huge movies I've never seen (LOTR, Harry Potters, only the first Matrix, only the first Die Hard, only the first Rocky, just saw Superman 1 for the first time the other day, not a single movie in the DCEU until I watched Man of Steel last night, etc to just name a few).

Just watched Field of Dreams for the first time this afternoon...8/10. Great movie.

I'm a similar way. I'm not much of a movie theater person, and I've never seen many movies that many people have seen/consider classics.

Although I do eventually end up watching the biggest movies of each year, though those really end up being the main movies I ever see.

I'm a movie person but there are a lot of classics I've never seen. Mostly it's because I don't tend to see things off recommendation alone. It's like one of those Inception kinds of things: you can plant the seed in my head, and if it comes off as an original thought for me to want to see it then I am most likely to.

Many of those movies can't ever live up to the hype that they are built up to be, either. That's why I tend to watch them on my own terms. Others of them also just aren't my "thing" or I plain didn't like them.

I was going to quote the prior review of Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning, but I couldn't find it.

I always knew that this was going to be my favorite movie in the series since it was my very arc from the original franchise.

The actors who played Himura and Tomoe did a great job for the most part. In fact, I think the entire cast was really good.

The fight scenes were so well done. All of the films in this franchise have done a fantastic job in their choreography, but this one felt like it was the most "real".

My post was in the Netflix thread. I didn't post a lot about it here and I only now realize that. I spoke about it to my friend on Facebook though, so I think eventually I'll put those comments into words as a review for myself.

I don't know the original story arc from the manga or anime in full, so I'm definitely glad you got to appreciate it for what it was!

I just realized a couple weeks ago, if it wasn’t a sci-fi or action movie there was no way I was going to see it in theaters so I missed a ton of movies as a kid. I’m kinda with Blzer on the recommendations, like I don’t think anyone that knew me would tell me to watch Good Will Hunting which is probably part of the reason I never watched it. But I get recommendations from Reddit all the time and they rarely fail but I tend to know how to read those reviews in context of what I like.

And I have to ask…what’d you think of Man of Steel?

I enjoyed it. I just got a Sonos ARC so having 7.1 surround sound now is making me want to watch more movies.

Like I said, I just watched the 1978 Superman movie for the first time last week and I didn't read the comics so I wasn't 100% sure what the origin of Superman was. From my understanding, Man of Steel changed the origination somewhat? Anyways, I didn't really have high expectations, I just wanted a good action movie with a good story and great special effects...I think it nailed all of those. The acting was kind of cheesy I guess but I'm not a critic to that kind of stuff.

My question for you (and others) is does Superman vs Batman live up to the hype? I don't remember people's opinion on it but I think it looks cool from the trailer.

And then should I just skip Justice League and only watch the Snyder cut?

I didn't like the theatrical version (heavily impacting pacing, storytelling, and characterization IMO), but did like the Ultimate Edition. One of Snyder's better films, really (alongside Watchmen and 300, and I prefer it above Man of Steel because MoS's action is just bad to me). The final hour is a notch down in my book, though.

Probably? I'm not sure. I think the Snyder Cut is much better, but I also like how I knew the overall structure of the story bits going into it and kind of seeing what was different.

There are some things I don't like as much about the Snyder Cut (sadly I don't like the aspect ratio outside of 15/70mm IMAX screens though most people do, too much slow motion, I didn't prefer some of the soundtrack changes, redundant exposition scenes, etc.) and it's hard to rewatch since you have to kind of schedule your day around it, but I do think just going straight to the Snyder Cut is the better route, because although the theatrical cut has its fun it really is the inferior product and is a far different tone than what the action should've dictated.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Man of Steel had all the ingredients to be my favorite comic movie ever and fell on its face, and then they picked a Batman in his mid-40s and Jesse Zuckerberg as Lex Luthor so as far as hype, you could very quickly see these guys didn’t know what they were doing. In that sense, it was what it was.

I would say watch the Ultimate Edition of BvS and both the theatrical and SnyderCuts of JL just to compare them if you’re gonna watch them, but I also wouldn’t recommend any of them to anyone. I was just reading the other day that Matt Reeves was on the shortlist for Man of Steel directors before Snyder and it’s like what kind of bs is this? Superman fans can’t catch a break, now the guy who could’ve saved us is doing Batman.

Whenever we get new hardware we play the original Transformers. It's what my wife saw on HDDVD at a friend's house that got me permission to pull the trigger on a HDTV, and has been kind of a tradition whenever I get a new TV or do something with our living room stereo setup, lol.

Whenever my wife hears Blackout's chopper blades as loud as if it's landing in our front yard she comes down to see what I've bought...

I just googled about Superman cause I was curious and it sounds like they're AGAIN rebooting the franchise and JJ Abrams is doing it. Thoughts?

Lol you just brought up a repressed memory for me...the first sound bar I bought around 2010 I remember the first time I really tested it out was either the first or second Transformers movie...my ex and her mom yelled at me to turn it down...it was just a Samsung soundbar with a subwoofer but it really packed a punch.

JJ is just producing, we don’t know who’s supposed to be directing yet, and that Ta-Nehisi Coates is writing. I’m cautiously optimistic. I think Superman having his birthplace and history taken from him after birth and having to live up to the ideals of a foreign land almost makes it easy to just make him Black, but I’ll be interested to see how they play it. My fear is Coates is too pessimistic. MBJ apparently is trying to do a miniseries as well. If they aren’t going to do the connected universe approach, maybe we can just hope one of many projects turns out to be decent.

I do the same thing, only I go to the final fight section where Ironhide does that slow-mo flip over that screaming girl. That bass drop hits just right and always makes me smile.

That opening fight sounds so good though, especially the first few seconds after Blackout transforms.

Wife and I went to watch the new Suicide Squad movie last night.

My personal opinion, it was just ok. To me, it just didn't live up to the hype. I know many people love it and that's great, but I just came away from it not liking it as much as I thought I would.
