Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Started using this app/website called Trakt to keep track of all the movies I've downl...ummm own totally legally and what I've watched, what I rated it, etc.

Last night I watched "The First Purge"...I know this wasn't the first one that came out but I decided to watch it since it's the chronological first...gave it a 5/10. Not sure why it's classified as a horror, nothing at all was scary or jump scary, it wasn't super gory. Acting was bland, plot is absurd, but none the less I wasn't totally bored so yeah that's why I'd give it a 5/10.

        Spider-Man
It has been quite awhile since I watched any of the Raimi movies so I wanted to revisit with the potential of a live Spider-Verse going on. Biggest takeaways were how much it feels like 89 Batman especially up to Uncle Ben's demise. I guess that's largely due to Danny Elfman, but Raimi and Burton vibe the same way to me. DaFoe is great and carries the rest of the cast that has a tendency to be a little wooden outside of JK Simmons. There's still a good amount of comic book corniness that is somehow endearing, but certainly dates it as an early 00s comic book movie. Also, I feel like I was always hard on Dunst as MJ, but watching now I'm not sure what my hangup was. I really miss pushup bras and v cut AE shirts. Oh, to be in middle school again.

Anyway, this still stands as one of my favorites despite it's flaws. One of the Marvel movies with a fantastic villain.

        Back to formula!

        Suicide Squad
I barely remember the first movie outside of Harley and Deadshot. This to me is an obvious improvement on all levels, but most importantly a narrative that isn't entirely shallow. The whole cast is great and I was surprised by how dusty things got at the end with Rat-catcher 2 who is the unanticipated MVP. John Cena nails his role and Harley is still fun to watch. Always good to see my man Idris getting respect.

        Clerks
Still hilarious and still relatable. The situation at the end jumps the shark a little for me, but still a great movie.

I'm watching Raiders of the Lost Ark for the first time(I know, I know)...I've got about 55 minutes left, just got to the part where Harrison Ford discovered where the ark is.

Considering its age, it's holding up very well. Can definitely see myself watching this one again. Ain't no way this movie gets a PG rating in 2021 though, lol.

So I think I'd give Raiders of the Lost Ark an 8/10. It'd probably be a 9 or 10 if I saw it in the 80's or 90's. Action is good though the fight scenes feel dated. The chase scene with the car/truck near the end was great though, that had to be something stellar for its time. No complaints about the acting from what I recall.

Is it all downhill from here? I always recall Raiders being most people's favorite Indiana Jones movie.

Ok so it is not all downhill. Temple Of Doom is a fun 80’s romp. Not nearly as good as Raiders but it will entertain you and Short Round and the Thugi Priest in the Temple of Doom is the butt of many many movie line jokes throughout my life. Just watch it and you will see why. It takes place before time wise (1932 I believe) Raiders of the Lost Ark. It has a lot more gloss (typical of the time 1984) and even more gore. This was the movie that inspired the creation of PG13.

Then Watch Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade which is arguably the best movie of all of them. Sir Sean Connery as Indy’s dad is amazing. I loved this movie and rank it right there with Raiders.

Crystal Skull - Lot’s and lot's of haters. I am not one of them. It is easily the least of all 4 films.....but it is Indiana Jones man. I love Harrison Ford and yeah the story was kinda weak....and it was disjointed....but it is ok. Worth a watch at least one time.

                My rankings

                1. Raiders of The Lost Ark
                1A. The Last Crusade
                2. Temple of Doom
                3. Crystal Skull

Enjoy them man. Timeless flicks for me. And they all hold up well.

Took a break from horror to start binging animated films. Started with the Ice Age movies and will probably end up with Disney before ending up back at horror in time for Halloween.

                    The Green Knight

I'm glad I went to the theater for this because it was superb. The tone and atmosphere is masterfully crafted keeping a tense foreboding throughout. Visually awe inspiring throughout with the wonderful landscapes, repeated symbolism, and use of color. The story is fairly straightforward, but there's a lot of side pieces to add tons of depth for those wanting to analyze endlessly. Dev Patel was amazing.

This was a fantastic follow up to The Lighthouse and for most people probably a more entertaining movie experience overall.

This is absolutely spot on to how I rank them. The Last Crusade is just an amazing movie. Probably my favorite if I had a gun to my head. Raiders is just a classic. Temple of Doom was always my guilty pleasure. Whenever it was on cable as a kid I would always stop to watch it whatever part I happened to catch it at. I agree about Crystal Skull too. Not great by any means but it was still fun for a shut your brain off and enjoy two hours sort of way. Enjoy the ride Cima.

I first saw Raiders at an LA drive-in while on a family vacation, maybe a month after it opened. I was 9.
I gave it 15/10 then, and see no reason to change my rating now!

                              I saw Jungle Cruise.

Not as good as Pirates of the Caribbean 1 (as much as I like The Rock, Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow was too good, and probably his best character he ever played), but these franchises do share some similarities.

The main review I saw for the movie is justified. The story and everything isn't overly great, but the chemistry with Dwayne Johnson/Emily Blunt as the two leads was great. Not the greatest of movies, but above average I'd rate it. Some great plot twists in it.

No Country for Old Men (4/5): I really liked this movie, Anton Chigurh is an all time villain for sure. Love the shot of him rolling around on the ground while strangling the cop, especially because it took so long. It always bothers me in movies when someone gets choked out in 7 seconds. And the coin scene. I had never seen Thanos outside of the MCU before and between this and Sicario I'm understanding why they gave him the role. I haven't read the book, but watching this made me wonder why it's made to sound so impossible to get a Blood Meridian movie done. This movie was a lot of cutting between different points of view, had a force of nature as the antagonist, feels pretty similar. Obviously the way Blood Meridian is written is a part of the experience but just as far as a plot, it doesn't seem impossible.

Annihilation (3/5): I felt like I was missing something here. Reading about it more after I was done and seeing that it should be taken as an allegory for self destruction/cancer makes sense, but just seems contrived. Not the meaning pulled out, one of the characters pretty much explicitly states the self destruction theme, just if that was the way to go I felt like the actual story they wanted to tell had very little to do with it.

Dr. No (2.5/5): 8 weeks to No Time to Die (assuming it doesn't get delayed again, fingers crossed) so basically need to watch 3 Bond movies a week to be ready. Seen them all before but never this close in succession so should be fun to have a definitive ranking. Anyway, give it a lot of props for kicking everything off and having pretty much everything you'd need in a Bond movie, but this is not a top tier Bond movie to me. Connery brings so much charm to the role and Sylvia Trench and Honey Ryder are cool, but it almost feels like a miniseries the way Dr. No doesn't even show up until almost the end. Still not a bad watch, should be fun to get into the rest.
