Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I just showed my mom The Departed. For the first half hour, she thought Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio were the same person (as in, she thought they were playing the same character). She was confused about the its development during that time, rightfully so.
I've heard this "issue" with the film before, and I don't see it. Outside of knowing who the actors are in general, they have different hair color, different accents, one has some facial hair stubble, and I mean I think they just look like different people. So they are both white and have the same haircut... should that be enough? I know they ain't gonna be confused with Anthony Anderson or something, but I was half-surprised she didn't through Mark Wahlberg into the mix of thinking that Matt Damon was basically talking to himself in the same scene, heh.
Then she made jokes to herself about it later, but I think she finally started to separate both the two characters and the two actors. She literally sees Matt Damon in movies all the time. She doesn't see Leo as much, but she's seen Titanic and that should be enough darn it.
As for me, I personally still have to see Infernal Affairs. For about ten years now, I sometimes try and search it up to see what streaming services have it where I don't have to pay extra, and it's never available. I'll track it down someday, using whatever means necessary.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Infernal Affairs is 100% worth a watch, I like it more than the Departed. They made two other movies in the series.
The Leo bits in the Departed, especially when hes with Jack and crew make me rewatch it now and then imho.Comment

Blzer, all the Infernal Affairs movies are on Netflix Asia. Just vpn to Philippines or Hong Kong and you’ll get them all and it’s worth it for sure.
IMO it’s better than the US version last I remembered. Since it’s been brought up I’m gonna rewatch it now.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
No Sudden Move. 4/5.
Great acting, as it should be with that cast. Story was interesting, but never really felt much tension. Maybe it wasn't going for that, but it was a fun watch overall, the ending was solid, and I would recommend it.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Rough week in the Bond rewatch, Connery's return and then the start of the Roger Moore era.
Diamonds Are Forever (1.5/5), Live and Let Die (1.5/5), The Man with the Golden Gun (2.5/5), The Spy Who Loved Me (4/5)
Spoiler
DAF: Connery came back overweight and extra Scottish, the sheer absurdity of this movie should mean it's more entertaining than it is but its just baffling. Bond takes off a woman's swimsuit top and chokes her with it for information lol, a guy reaches into his pocket and there's a mousetrap-esque device, Blofeld clones dying in vats of poop, and this is all before the song starts, legendary song btw. The song and the fact that there's a Bond girl in this named Plenty O'Toole may be the only things saving this from a 1/5. The henchmen in this are just god awful.
LALD: I probably mentally blocked out that they made a blaxploitation inspired Bond movie because I felt like this was my first time seeing it even though I know it isn't. You feel the switch from Scottish Connery to English Moore as soon as he gets in a taxi and keeps saying "Cholly" lol. There's some funny stuff here ("My name is..." "Names are for tombstones, y'all take this honky out and waste him") and Yaphet Kotto is great but feels like he's in a different movie. He slapped the hell out of Solitaire though, at this point I noticed I'm pretty sure a woman gets slapped in every movie of the series so far. Yapphet Kotto fighting at the end was a disgrace and the way he went out was just...you can't make the **** up. I remembered this song being better too, it should've just been a ballad, I don't love the upbeat parts.
TMWTGG: Fights getting better here, we've got Nick Nack the original Mini-Me, a whole Enter the Dragon feeling part where a guy bows to Bond and gets kicked in the face before the fight starts lol, they let the Japanese girls do what they should've done and kick ***. Count Dooku, the real James Bond, of course is awesome in this. I will say the villains to this point are outshining Moore in a way that never happened to Connery. There's also a sumo wrestling fight where Bond wins by grabbing 2 handfuls of *** and then giving the guy a wedgie lol. One of the things that should feel absurd but ends up working is Bond stuffing Nick Nack in a suitcase and hoisting him like a pirate, hysterical.
TSWLM: Roger Moore finally gets a movie to match his Bond. I think the other 2 movies were very goofy but Moore is playing Bond almost straight so he seems like a fish out of water but this one fits. First you get the super dope 70's Bond disco remix, Nobody Does It Better which is a legendary song but never felt right for Bond for me until this watch when I was listening to the lyrics. Stromberg going for my heart by having a chick get eaten by a shark with classical music playing and then raising his lair to it, just awesome. Anya is a great Bond girl, you've got the classic Lotus going underwater and emerging on the beach, and then Jaws getting beaten by temporarily taken out by a magnet and biting a shark to death. The music overall in this is the best in the series so far.
Rankings through 10 movies:
Goldfinger
On Her Majesty > From Russia
The Spy Who Loved Me
Dr. No = You Only Live Twice
The Man with the Golden Gun
Thunderball
Live and Let Die
Diamonds are Forever
Infernal Affairs (4.5/5): I've seen the Departed years ago, but never this until you guys mentioned it. The movie is good, but I'm more interesting in this Berenstein bears scenario I have going on here, I looked at the title of this movie a dozen times and I swear every time it was Internal Affairs. It's a police movie so the change didn't even register for me, it wasn't until I was done with the movie and reading about it that I realized there was an f lol. Dope movie though, I think it would've hit harder if I hadn't already seen the Departed, but it was cool regardless. The shot on the roof where Leung has the gun to Lau's head was dope. My first reaction was The Departed is better but it's hard to say. I want to lean toward Infernal Affairs just for the simple fact that they got all of this done in 100 minutes, Scorcese bloated the hell out of The Departed. The relationships are better in this, both of them going for the same girl in The Departed was unnecessary. And no disrespect to him but Jack Nicholson in The Departed is so sleazy he just doesn't seem like a dude you owe any loyalty to so the idea that both guys are tortured in their undercover roles works better here too.Last edited by DieHardYankee26; 09-07-2021, 08:58 AM.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Internal Affairs is also a solid movie.
Connery is too old for Diamonds, the same way Roger Moore is for A View to a Kill. Diamonds has kitsch value for me, especially Jimmy Dean.
Can't wait to see your opinion of Moonraker once you get to itComment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
25 days til Bond 25 and I've finally escaped the Moore era and can start Dalton. Definitely going to watch Becoming Bond with Lazenby before but will probably save Being Bond with Daniel Craig for after for the end of the era.
Moonraker (2.5/5), For Your Eyes Only (1.5/5), Octo***** (2/5), A View to A Kill (2.5/5)
Spoiler
Moonraker: Great opening, song is alright, Holly Goodhead what more needs to be said, Jaws being turned into a comedy character is not ideal but also somehow not as bad as it could've been, "Have you broken something?" "Oh you mean my tailor's heart" after falling, Bond going full Indiana Jones with some of these stunts I appreciate. Drax is a lame villain but him telling Holly "your desire to be the first woman in space will be fulfilled shortly" while threatening to throw her out of the airlock is hilarious, the game of interstellar laser tag was awful but eh. "Desolated Mr. Bond?" "Heartbroken Mr. Drax" after shooting him in the heart with a dart. The last half hour in space feels like an hour and a half by itself, but then Q branch and the guys check in on Bond with Holly at the end and it gives us arguably the best closing lines in movie history: "What is Bond doing?" "I think he's attempting re-entry sir".
For Your Eyes Only: I do not understand what people see in this movie. Looking at rankings people tend to put this one fairly high but it just does nothing for me. First you've got the unnamed bald maniac in a wheelchair that's definitely not Blofeld. Bond picks him up by his wheelchair with a helicopter and Fauxfeld offers him a delicatessen lol. Apparently they wanted to show that they could do a successful movie without Blofeld but this was not the way. I do not like the song here at all. There's a weird sound effect when Bond looks at a car that felt worse than the slide whistle in TMWTGG. This is the first movie I noticed Roger Moore being old, probably because the girls look so young. Hockey assassins, kicking a car off a cliff "he had no head for heights". The best part of this movie is reading the wiki page about how it all came together and seeing the underwater stuff was not filmed underwater, I had no idea. The villain also tied Bond to the girl and tried to drag them through the ocean to be eaten by sharks which...Scott Evil would never have stood for, it just made me immediately go "ok just shoot him in the head, we're doing a lot here", for a second I forgot what happened and thought they were setting him up to do to him what happened to Blackbeard in Black Sails but that was way too brutal. End feels like a spy sequence, Bibi gets slapped twice, Bond takes the machine the bad guy was looking for, throws it off a cliff, and the dude just walks away. Then fake Margaret Thatcher on the phone with a parrot, it feels out of place in what is supposed to be a more serious movie, it was as bad to me as the Moonraker end was good.
Octo*****: Moore's age was noticeable here but I think they offset it with an age appropriate Bond girl so it didn't seem as noticeable. The opening is so weird, Bond ends up in a truck carrying horses and escapes in an unfoldable plane lol, then there's an air battle but the way its edited it rough. Another bad song, I wonder how much these songs affect my view on the Moore era, he didn't have any help hardly. Bond sees tattoo "What is that" "That's my little octo*****" Connery would've killed that moment, the villain plopping an eye out of a sheep's head and eating it like a boiled egg was nuts, swimming up to the lair in a crocodile suit, one of Octo*****'s minions is dressed like Thing 1. There's one sequence in this movie that I was just like wut...a guy throws 4 throwing knives and pins Bond to a door by his shirt and instead of just throwing another knife between his eyes he tries to stab him and Bond opens the door and stabs him instead. I feel like Will Ferrell in Wedding Crashers all the time watching these movies in the best way, "what an idiot!" It's just so entertaining. Then there's the other hand. If Moore's time as Bond could be summed up in one scene for me it's him defusing a bomb at a circus in a clown suit. I like all of the Union Jack stuff they do, this time they put it on a hot air balloon, pretty cool.
View to a Kill: "MORE! MORE POWER!" Max Zorin the OG Kylo Ren. This is to me what FYEO seems to be for most people, I really like this movie. Christopher Walken's Zorin is one of my favorite Bond villains, he's just cold as ice. And May Day is a legit beast of a henchman. The song sounds more like a Rocky montage song than a Bond theme, but people seem to love it so I'll let them have it. Bond's age is mostly noticeable in this because of the plastic surgery Moore had has his eyes as open as possible for damn near the entire movie and the terrible fights, but I actually thought he looked better in this than Octo*****. There's a fight I literally took a picture of, the cut to the stunt double was so sloppy you could clearly see it wasn't Moore then they cut back just as obviously. But the villains carry this for me and they do it well. Zorin lifting the map of Silicon Valley, May Day dumping the guy out of the blimp, Zorin "intuitive improvisation is the secret of genius"...then at the end "GIVE ME SOME SPARE CLIPS" before he just goes nuts on the guys in his lair, even his death was good. There's a set piece where Bond is hanging from a fire truck ladder driving through the streets and that's dope too. My girl Midge from That 70's Show is just awful in this, she looks great but she's always screaming and there's one point where she says she studied geology and it's as believable as Christmas Jones being a nuclear physicist.
