It's more hilarious for people to say Illmatic is overrated. That album is classic material from beginning to end.

Illmatic is the definition of a perfect hip hop/rap album. It's the Holy Grail. It's Flawless (shoutouts to Flawless).. not one wack beat, no wack bars, flow, or content and deserves all the praises it gets.http://www.myspace.com/phillthegenesis

Re: Jay-Z "D.O.A (Death of Autotune)"
I know it's hip hop blasphemy, but I'd rather listen to the Marshall Mathers LP a thousand times straight than listen to Illmatic one more time. I put on Illmatic yesterday, via my roommate's iTunes since I deleted it from mine last year, and that album damn near put me to sleep. I was so bored, lol. It was amazing, not only did I come away from it liking Illmatic less, but I couldn't even listen to any other rap for several hours. I think there is one beat on that album that I didn't hate.
Lyrically, Nas shows some great skill on that album, but I couldn't be more bored than when people start rapping about wearing backwards hats and getting their guns jammed.Comment

Using The Source's(of all people lol)5 Mic Rating System, which known as the most flawed system out, is not a good way to make your point.
LOL @ Born feeling Illmatic-less.#RespectTheCultureComment

That's just one line, lol. And that's not even what the line is about. He quickly turns that around to a riff on how people respond to controversy. Regardless, Eminem doesn't try to be deep. He just rants about his feelings, opinions and things he'd done in the past when he's not making jokes.Comment

As far as "trying to be deep"....I could see if you said that about any other NAS album, but this was his first, thats what made Illmatic so special...it was different from any of the stuff that was out at the time...what would be his advantage of "trying" to be deep at that point of the game? lol
Now I think you can say that about him on some records...but NAs is NAs...that was just him back thenComment

And on the other side, I didn't say that it was a great thing for Em to say. Just that I find it entertaining within the context that he places it.Comment

I didn't make excuses for one, nor did I criticize the other. I said it bores me. Maybe it's awesome for other people, but it's boring to me. Dressing in Guess clothes, living in the projects... yaaaawwwwwwwwwnnnnn. Just bores the hell out of me.

Re: Jay-Z "D.O.A (Death of Autotune)"
Yeah, you call this song the death of autotune but give those that you're cool with a pass for using it, seems like a mixed message to me. Fact is, T-pain bought it back to the mainstream public, and just like many others, Lil Wayne and Kanye jumped on that bandwagon, and made some hit or miss music with it, but yet its okay for them to use it. This is my problem with this song, and its so called message. If you're going to start this anti-autotune campaign, make sure that your message is concise and consistent. I have my doubts as to why he made this song anyway. Let's be honest with ourselves, Jay-Z is a businessman, and he saw a perfect opportunity to try to dead something that is already long in the tooth anyway. Do you really think Jay-Z made this song because its causing rap music to decline in quality? If that was the case, he should have made a song called D.O.P (Death Of Payola), because that's what's really hurting rap music right now, but he took the safe route and if all goes according to plan, he's going to get credit for killing off autotune, even though as I said before, people were growing weary of it.
All in all, I don't find the song to be that good, and I felt it could have been executed much better.

Re: Jay-Z "D.O.A (Death of Autotune)"
Lemme clarify a little bit. 24th misinterpreted and I didn't correct it, and now you're reading it the same way. I wasn't implying that Nas was trying to be deep on Illmatic. I wasn't referring to him at all when addressing Em's content. Just saying that I read most of Em's stuff as a humorous, psychotic, personal or critical rant. People sing/rap about their feelings or their thoughts in different degrees, and I think Em leans much more towards his feelings, or at least that's the context that he places things in.
Because we were discussing both artists, that read as: Nas is trying to be deep on Illmatic, so I'm judging his content. Em is not trying to be deep on MMLP, so he gets a pass.
I'm not "judging" Nas's content on Illmatic in this discussion. It just bores me.
As far as relating to it....I grew up in Brooklyn and Queens in the projects surrounded by people who walked and talked just like Nas, so I'm more than a little familiar with all of his references. It's just that to me, he doesn't provide a perspective that I can't see with my own eyes, nor does his context bring me closer to walking in his shoes. So I find it boring.Comment
