Re: Skyfall
Not questioning your review because I haven't seen it yet. I wouldn't question it even if I end up loving it. I just thought your post offered a good contrast between some select reviews off the RT site.I'm not a hard marker. It's just the style of the movie has changed. If you are expecting a better movie than Casino Royale or even its equal you will be very disappointed.
Its not a bad movie just not a great one. It has a lot of sarcastic comical moments and aspects from the original Bond movies but it falls short in a lot of areas when it comes to the story writing.
It has a great idea but misused it in my opinion.
I've scratched my head at some movies that have received great reviews so I know where you're coming from. That's why we all have an opinions, and your opinion mirrors a lot of the positive (fresh) RT reviews.Comment

Re: Skyfall
Huge Bond fan (dating back to the Connery days) and I got to see this last week. Man I looooved it!
That whole scene with theSpoilerDB9 and the classic Bond theme just gave me goose bumps!
And Sean Connery will always be my number 1 Bond actor but Daniel Craig is a very close No.2, I love the guy (mind you I am not a Pierce Brosnan nor Rooger Moore fan because those movies were a little out there, I like my Bond movies a little more grounded).
So here's my top Bond movies of all time:
1) From Russia With Love (honorary position)
2 Casino Royale
3) Skyfall
2 out of my top 3 are Daniel Craigs and I walked away very happily surprised.
Go watch it guys!Comment

Wow, couldn't agree more with your top 3. Those are absolutely my favorites, in that order.Huge Bond fan (dating back to the Connery days) and I got to see this last week. Man I looooved it!

Re: Skyfall
I'll try and limit spoilers, just saw it last night. For a quick synopsis, this was my favorite of Craig's films (yes, better than Casino Royale) and it is certainly up there with my favorite Bond movies, period. This movie had a lot more depth than the Bond films I think many are used to, so it comes off as much more than that. Perhaps that is why some would not like it.
Spoiler
Bardem was great, but if you've seen NCFOM, you know he plays a psychotic villain pretty convincingly.
There were some great throwback moments to celebrate the 50-year anniversary. Plus the movie really set itself up well for the next train of Bond films. Unfortunately, the bar has been set fairly high, as well, for what we could expect.
The movies uses suspense very well to build up its key moments. Even if you're not necessarily a Bond fan but you like action movies or some similar genres, this is definitely worth a watch. 9/10.Comment

Re: Skyfall
I saw it last night and I actually agree with catch22 as far as the feel of this. To me, it felt like it was in a completely different universe than Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. Sure, there was a little bit of emotional depth, but the threat really never felt compelling to me even though Javier Bardem was really fascinating to watch. Like Catch, I wish they would have expanded his role into an over-arching Blofield type character, but I still really enjoyed what was given to us.
The story itself felt fast paced despite not much depth, but I thought it was contrasted well with Bond and M's slow-paced and dramatically heavy scenes. Dench and Craig have such a great connection in these films. "Made you feel it did he?"
Spoiler
I liked the nods to the classic Bond and I loved the way it ended by "setting up" the universe. A little part of me feels like those moments took a little away from the movie. Casino Royale and QoS were hammy, but they were personal and not really being subjected to the history/tradition of the franchise whereas Skyfall felt decidedly traditional. The classic Bond flourishes and splashes such as the soundtrack bits and "accessories" and characters were great to see and hear again, but it creates a big disconnect from Craig's first two films. I'm not complaining as Skyfall is a very good, amazingly stylistic film, but its a big shift from CR and QoS.
Specifics:
SpoilerThe fight scene in Shanghai was beautiful. I could watch that all day long. Also, Javier's hair and that first scene with Bond was amazing.
I kind of figured out who everyone was by the time the shootout happened at the end of the second act.
Q was great, but I really hate how movies will say how difficult something is and thats it. I felt like half his scenes were, "this is nearly impossible to do, but **** it lets keep trucking."
Bond going over the waterfall. That is going to bug me for a long time.
The opening credits were AWESOME.
