    Re: Skyfall

I don't disagree with anything you said. In fact, I'm willing to bet the 40-60 year old crowd will love this film (not saying that because of you man haha ). Everything in this film just felt so "traditional," and it was an interesting style and take. Traditional effects, action, and gadgets (no more "exploding pens" haha). I just wish the story itself had more drive to it. If you look back and think about it, you'll ask yourself what story elements actually drove the film, and you'll find yourself realizing there were only one or two in the whole film.

I wish Silva was explained/explored a bit more, too. CR had plenty of Le Chiffre and QoS might have had too much Greene (making him appear very "diabolical" when he's just a lame wimp), and there was room here to explore the space with Bardem. What a loony villain, though. He reminded me a bit of The Joker and that guy from Hanna who whistles all the time.

I haven't seen the film yet, but if this movie moves the series back towards its roots, then I will be pleased.

I wasn't a huge fan of CR and especially QoS (though, don't get me wrong, they were still good), but I'd love to see Bond moving back towards the more traditional movies.

      That's just me, though.

I'd say "traditional espionage" is the best way to put it, even down to the way the score is played/when it's played. You'll love it, but as I said, I think there is something to be desired with the lacking story itself (more so: what is resolved and why the movie flows the way it does).

          Re: Skyfall

There's a lot going on with the story as there's several different branches going on at the same time, but ultimately everything revolves around M. The movie really isn't centrally about Bond and the movie really feels like a major character in a small role of a larger narrative. Bond himself is really a foil to Silva so expanding upon Silva wouldn't really be necessary other than to give Bardem more time to chew scene in a complete sociopath manner.

I really think how the story is constructed and how each character is used is really fascinating. The whole setup within the setup was amazing to watch unfold.

Saw it last night in IMAX. Thought it was slightly better than Casino Royale. Just my opinion though.

Do you have to watch the first 2 to follow this movie? I've seen the first 2 but my gf hasn't.

Definitely not. As I said, I'm going to start thinking of CR and QoS as a "two-part prologue" to an oncoming Craig trilogy. Whether stories from this point out will intertwine or we will see/hear about characters like Felix, Vesper, Mr. White, and Mathis remains to be seen, but I would still say that his run hasn't officially "started" as the agent that we've grown up with until Skyfall.

I think the next two films will be more like Skyfall than they'll be like CR or QoS, for better or for worse. I'd really love to see Christopher Nolan get a shot for the next sequel.

Anyway, to extend my answer for your question, you should still see Casino Royale. Quantum of Solace is neither here nor there, both regarding story and the actual watching value.

Barbara Broccoli (sp?) has been on record stating that they'll eventually go back to the Quantum storyline before Craig's tenure is up so that it'll be a bit of a trilogy. That doesn't mean that'll be the thrust of the next film but it's something to look out for.

Oh, I didn't say that they won't borrow story elements for those films (actually I kind of did, saying that would remain to be seen). I just meant as far as the style these sequels will go, or liking them...

It's a damn shame that SPECTRE and Blofeld's rights are owned by someone else as I think Blofeld is the perfect villain to fill the role that Silva was meant to be on a psychological level.
Did not know that the SPECTRE and Blofeld rights are held elsewhere, which is too bad. Even though the SPECTRE Blofeld story lines from previous original Bond films were hammy, they left an indomitable characterization of a villain for years to come even though mocked in many films and shows since.

SPECTRE in this movie and maybe in future iterations could have been the antecedent to MI6 while Blofeld the opposite of Bond. Thus opening up the possibility of a remake of On Her Majesty's Secret Service or many other original (SPECTRE/Blofeld) Bond films with this "reboot" film.

I mean he looked the role, all he needed was a white cat and he's Blofeld. In fact in one scene when she tells Bond what was his name, I honestly thought she was gonna say "his name is Ernst Stavo Blofeld." Awe the disappointment when it wasn't.

Just saw this. ****ing awesome. Blew Quantum away, but not quite Casino Royale for me. Opening credits were really, really bad ***. I don't know if I cared too much for the plot, but it was good enough. Great idea, not sure about the execution. Bardem was fantastic. I feel like I wanted to know MORE.

Visually, it was outstanding. The Shanghai scene with the different colors and the fight, just wow. Fireworks were great. Absolutely gorgeous. Same with the casino in Macau. Pretty much everything was gorgeous. Mendes did a great job directing this one.

I finally saw this earlier. It was really good. I loved when they jumped in the classic DB5 and the throwback Bond music returned!

The plot was decent, but nothing breath-taking. The scenes were awesome, though, and the directing was great. Definitely the best movie I've seen this year.

I don't think I would say it's the best Bond movie ever, but it's the best in the last decade at least.
