Re: Michael Jackson has passed away
I was under the assumption that the city also handles those parades? Do private companies pay the police for those events? A legit question because I don't know. I just assumed it was always a city expense.
If it's in fact privately funded then I get the argument now and wouldn't disagree at all.
If the city was getting some help for the memorial I'd be fine with it...I know it's a public safety thing and whatnot, just seems wasteful when so many city workers are getting let go.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Re: Michael Jackson has passed away
City and team split the cost according to this article, but I think there were more corporate sponsors and whatnot added later. Either way, the city wasn't on the hook like they normally have been in the past (and honestly, the city shouldn't ever have to pay for these IMO).

I'm still interested in knowing who is getting this money for the tickets. MJ has a pretty nice debt. If the family is collecting money over there, it should only go to one place."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Michael Jackson has passed away
"L.A. City Councilwoman Jan Perry said this morning that the city will dip into a special fund set aside for extraordinary events to pay for the security costs associated with Michael Jackson's memorial service Tuesday at Staples Center."
This seems like an "extraordinary event" to me so I have no problem with the city chipping in. I think those who have the money, such as Jackson's rich Hollywood friends, should assist with donations as well. Having collection boxes at the event would not be a bad idea either. Combine the donations with the coporate sponsors (I'm not sure where that money goes, be it the city or the company that owns the Staples Center) and I would think this will turn out like the Lakers parade and impact the city's funds in a small manner. And if more money is brought in than what was expensed I'd like to think that would be turned over to a charity or something as it seems odd to profit off of a memorial service.Comment

Re: Michael Jackson has passed away
Easily I would think. I read somewhere today that plane tickets from Europe are being sold out right and left to Los Angeles as well as anywhere close they can get. Im sure not 100% are for the memorial tomorrow but I would bet a huge percentage of them are.Comment

Re: Michael Jackson has passed away
Watching Fox News today I heard it was more like a $4M ticket and that the city of L.A. had set up a website for people to make donations. There's something very perverse about all of that. An entertainer who made millions upon millions of dollars and financially crippled city is being asked to flip the bill.Comment
