Boone also has a funny line to Locke. "Are you pulling my leg?" Heh. Think about it.

So, here's another theory that I've been running through my head.

b]We have been led to believe that whatever happened happened. What if this alternate reality is supposed to happen as well?[/b]

The entire Island is underwater and the statue is also broken in this alternate reality. Wouldn't water erosion help make a large statue begin to deteriorate?

edit: Wow, what a poorly worded sentence. Let's try that again.

Couldn't a statue begin to deteriorate as a result of being submerged in water?
I think that's going to be the underlying theme or answer to this whole show.
Alternate realities would explain why all of them knew each other in some manor.
They were all destined to join at some point in their lives. But it took the million choices and decisions in millions of alternate universes before they all lined up perfectly.

I'm intrigued as to what will happen in this new alternate universe. Will they eventually all get back to the island signifying that you can't fight fate?
But what is fate? Jacob makes a point over and over that we're all of free will.
But at the same time, people are slaves to their personalities. They'll eventually make the same choices over and over again, which in turn might be mistaken as fate.

Probably because there is a difference in being severely wounded (Sayid) and dead (Juliette) Pete.

As for the alternate realities, I've read a lot about them and I think they are very interesting. The idea though that there is a whole universe for each choice we make seems too mind boggling to grasp. You mean that the fact I choose ham @ Subway over turkey @ Subway means a new universe is created and everything is different in the turkey universe vs. the ham universe? Seriously?? It makes more sense to me for alternate realities to be created on decisions of only the highest importance (ie my wife and son are drowning, I can only save one, which do I pick?)...but then maybe that's just because my human brain can't fathom that many separate and distinct universes.

Awesome premiere last night. I don't know what else to call him, so I'll just keep calling him the Smoke Monster, but I wonder what he meant when he said that he wanted to go home. Where exactly is home for him?

I love any episode with Richard in it. Seeing the fear in his eyes when he realized who he was looking at was a really powerful scene. I can't wait until we get more history behind the whole "in chains" comment. Eventually they're going to have to bring us back to that point in the storyline.

I try not to question things too much as I watch Lost. I just wait for the pieces to be unlocked as we move along. One thing is for sure though, it's going to be a long week of waiting for me. Glad this is finally back on.

I've heard some quantum physisicts talk about all of this stuff and it's pretty confusing.
But according to some eggheads, that's precisely what they believe.
That there are millions, maybe billions of altnernate universes where each decision is different.

I've heard some people say this is why we have de ja vu. We think we've seen it before only because one of our past lives, or alternate personalities, has already been there, done that.

Pappy Knuckles - since I have always viewed this show as good vs. evil IMO the Smoke Monster equates to Lucifer...and "home" would be heaven. I'm not sure if "home" means the rest of the world, some other place in the world, or an actual heaven in the sky though. However I am pretty confident that the island is representative of Hell/purgatory and basically that is why the Smoke Monster is confined to that area. That would also explain why others can come and go freely but the Smoke Monster is stuck, if that place is a purgatory of some sort. Of course I think the whole point of the show is to show that good vs. evil is a balance and one that isn't so black & white as we would like to think so it's more subtle than simply good vs. evil but more like ying and yang.

Money99 - if there are parallel universes for each decision each person makes then there would be beyond trillions of universes, there'd be "whatever-the-word-is-for-trillions-times-trillions"...but yeah just because a number is high doesn't mean it's impossible, it's just harder for us to comprehend.

Can the smoke monster be in two places at one time? This may be a dumb thought but is there any chance that the smoke monster has taken on the appearance of Sayid and John Locke at the same time?

Doubtful, even the most powerful of demons can only possess one person at a time so they would really be bending the "rules" if they did that.

To back up ODogg, you can pull a lot of crazy stuff on us in LOST, but I think if the Smoke Monster was also Sayid, I'd agree that the show went way overboard.

One at a time makes sense. John Locke is the appearance he wants to take. Someone or something else has chosen Sayid. It could be Jacob, it could be someone else Jacob was hoping to revive. Whoever it is, Jacob knew it would happen.

One thing that happened last night, which I couldn't help but laugh out loud over, was how everyone reacted when Sayid came back to life.
                      Really? You were surprised?

You've seen a living smoke monster, dead people walking around, an entire island disappear, transported back in time; but you're shocked by this?
                      Too funny.

Ok, so lets go deeper with this. I feel like this is the right direction. Cuse is officially calling these things flash-sideways. Cool. So, it's an alternate reality that's occurring at the same time on another dimensional plane of time or whatever. I won't try to get too technical. We get it.

Let's go back to Jacob and the Man in Black speaking in the teaser of the S5 Finale.

JACOB: I take it you're here because of the ship.
ENEMY: I am. How did they find the Island?
JACOB: You'll have to ask them when they get here.
ENEMY: I don't have to ask. You brought them here. Still trying to prove me wrong, aren't you?
                        JACOB: You are wrong.
ENEMY: Am I? They come. They fight. They destroy. They corrupt. It always ends the same.
JACOB: It only ends once. Anything that happens before that is just progress.

It's possible that Jacob and his Nemesis have gone through this countless times.

The Nemesis seems to know that the ship is on its way. How does he know that? Maybe he just knows that the ship always comes at this point.

Maybe the way they get there is always different so he asks: How did they find it [this time]? Jacob says you'll have to ask them to which his Nemesis pretty much scoffs at knowing that Jacob brought them there by his own power.

Perhaps they have to choose how they arrive, but Jacob always orchestrates their arrival. And he's doing it to prove his Nemesis wrong. What exactly is he trying to prove? Apparently, he's trying to prove that it doesn't always end the same way.

The only thing we know that has carried this same theme is time. Miles says that all of this was supposed to happen. Whatever happened happened. That's the theory the Nemesis is standing by as well.

But, Faraday "proved" there are variables. People. This is what Jacob seems to believe.

Anything that happened prior is just progress. So, because this is a show that has an end point, we can safely assume that the series will choose the pay-off pitch. We're not seeing ball three here. This is a 3-2 count. This alternate reality is the reality that eventually either proves Jacob right or ultimately proves the Nemesis right. There's no after. There's no other experiment. This is the end game.

Because I doubt that a series will have a figure like Jacob, a man trying to prove something wrong, end up being wrong, I'm also going to assume that Jacob will eventually be right. Things do change or can change because of progress, variables, people, whatever helps explain it.

That's where my thoughts end because I can't fathom how an alternate reality helps resolve that. It does, somehow, but I'd have to be Lindelof or Cuse to know the answer.

                        Man, I love this show.

I like the thought of Jack fixing Locke in the alternte reality. I think i will do more watching and enjoying instead of wrecking my brain trying to figure things out this season.

That was an incredible season opener.

I love how the show is seemingly headed towards two parallel lines of time... one where the Lost crew landed, and the other where it didn't work.

Question - How many years has Jin (and the rest of them) been on the island? His English is pretty incredible... just trying to figure out the time frame. They were trapped on the island for around 100 days before being sent back to the 70's... then they were there for another group of years... and somehow are back in present day. Wondering what the amount of time passed would be.

                              Really? You were surprised?

You've seen a living smoke monster, dead people walking around, an entire island disappear, transported back in time; but you're shocked by this?
                              Too funny.
It's always funny when those things happen on shows. The characters are still living in a world of doubt.

It's at the point where the audience knows more than the characters. I guess that's by design as part of the fun is seeing them get there, but we all knew that Sayid would rise from the grave.

The only person who knew something was up was Miles, but like everything else on this show, no one ever says a damn thing to one another. That's probably my biggest frustration at times. Miles was confused and he didn't stop to say: hey, guys, something is not right here. He just keeps it to himself.

Nightline, Dateline (whichever it was) had a report on Lost after the premiere event and ran a clip about everyone lying to each other. It was cut-after-cut-after-cut of people saying: "Why are you lying to me?" "You're lying?" "I know you're lying?" "Why do you need to lie?"

It's hilarious because it's true. I have never seen such a large group keep so much from each other. It's like they each don't believe in gossip.

I mean I get it from a writing stand point. If everyone talks, there's no mystery. But, it's truly the one thing on this show that I have to push aside for the purpose of telling the story. I can accept smoke monsters, the living dead, time travel, alternate realities, but I have no choice but to accept the lack of gossip.

                                Crash landed in September 2004.
                                Oceanic Six saved January 2005.

                                Flash back to 1974.
                                Oceanic Six return 1977.

He pretty much learned his English over that three year span in Dharmaville.
