I almost got the Sammy plasma but have read online that the 2008 line had a buzzing problem with the major of them. Would have been happy with a Panny but the LG was $70 cheaper, a 2009 version, had an extra HDMI port, and a swivel stand.

So this is what I did this morning:
    1) logged into my live.com email account
    2) went to bing.com search engine & started shopping
    3) did a search for the "LG 50PQ30"
    4) clicked on the link with the highest cash back being Sears.com (13%)
    5) used by Sears card at checkout (10% off electronics over $699 using a Sears card)
    6) entered the coupon SEARS5OFF50 for extra $5 (works on any purchase over $50--may have to call the customer service to get them to add this after the fact)
    7) checked out
I'm still going to purchase a new set within the next 2 weeks and I also have been looking at the LG's, but when it comes to Plasmas' they say Panny is the brand to get. They are suppose to be better then the rest. I myself donlt care, I like LG and will most likely get another LG.

True. However, for black friday the only 50 inch tvs in my price range (max $750) its between 2008 Sammy and Panny and a 2009 LG. The buzzing issue with last year's Sammy made it come down to a Panny or the LG. My parents have a 720p plasma and it's very very good. To my eyes, the LG looked as good and had an extra HDMI port and was $70 cheaper. It also has an automatic audio leveler when watching live tv...which online reports say works well.

The LG also has a cool swivel stand.

I apologize for asking so many questions, but I really am clueless when it comes to TVs and want to get the best deal possible. I think I've narrowed it down to one of these two, but I was wondering which one would be the better deal. Or is there a better value out there for a 37" TV that I should look into?

The main thing you want to look at is refresh rate (the lower the better). The sammy is 6ms which is above average....the refresh rate for the Vizio is 8ms which is average

If money was no object I'd get the Sammy--hands down.

With www.bing.com/cashback the sammy and vizio are virtually the same price
LCD response times will not have much effect on your gaming performance. An LCD TV with a 60 Hz refresh rate needs an LCD response time of at least 8 ms. A 120 Hz refresh rate typically requires an LCD response rate of 5 ms or better. Faster response time LCDs (under 8 ms) without 120 Hz refresh rates have little to NO impact on motion blur and only a marginal impact on motion jitter. A 120 Hz refresh rate and the faster response time LCDs will eliminate most motion jitter, but will have only a marginal impact on motion blur. More important than LCD response time when gaming is video lag. Look for an HDTV with a gaming mode to reduce video lag.

Thanks. My sister just bought a house so I figured that'd be a nice present.

The problem is now I want one for myself.

                      Congrats.

Couldn't resist, so I went ahead and hooked up the LG. So far, so good. Nice picture, hooked up to Directv HD box. It's black levels aren't as good as my parent's Panny plasma.

                      Loving the usb connection.

About to try out Sin City on blu ray.

Game, you seem to be the resident expert and I'd love to hear more of your impressions on the Plasma LG you just bought (link - I know you bought the 720P...I like the 1080P more and I wouldn't need the extra HDMI port) - I'm looking real hard at it myself.

I've heard that if you watch a lot of sports then Plasma is the way to go b/c the refresh rate nearly eliminates the motion blur but I also play a lot on my PS3 so I'm not sure if there are any effects that could arise. What are some of the drawbacks compared to the LCD?

It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.

LOL, I'm far from an expert. Just happened to like tvs and pass on any info i stumble accross. Football Forever is the man to go to when it comes to LCDs.
Anywhoo...For these newer plasmas, no real concerns if you use common sense. Burn in (which is permanent image retention) used to be the thing to worry about. You'd have to deliberately try and make that happen nowadays. More likely to see some image retention that is temporary if you leave a static image on your plasma for a long time. Can take anywhere from a couple minutes to an hour to go away completely. Today's plasma have pixel orbiters to cut down the chances of IR drastically. You should be fine gaming on a plasma. (Note: this is referring to the brand name plasmas--LG, Panny, Sammy--can't vouch for the others)

There is some debate on whether or not you should "break-in" a new plasma. And if so, for how long. I'm doing just to be on the safe side by making sure I lower the contrast, take it off vivid mode and making sure all the viewing fills the entire screen.

I'm going for 100 hours (approx. a month) then it should be good to go.

The PQ on the Sin City blu ray is impressing me. Blacks and contrasts are holding up well despite the lowered settings.

When I was at Walmart today during my lunch break at 2pm, I seen 13 people returning plasma tvs that they bought at 5am because the picture went out on them and they couldnt see anything at all. They were the Emerson, Samsung, and Sanyo plasmas they had on sale from $350 to $598. I was thinking damnnnnnnn that is a lot of plasmas being returning already.

I seen 8 people returning the 32 inch Vizio tv too they had for $398. Needless to say it was a lot of cursing going on in the electronic department at Walmart from angry customers.

Was that Sammy at walmart a derivative? I know somebody was selling one that had a 400 in the model number instead of 430 or 450. Could have been Sears or Kmart...

There was only a $100 difference between the Sanyo and most of the brand name plasmas. Works out to less than 30 cents a day for one year.

I believe it was 400 model number, I just know it was something Walmart dont normally carry in store. The only plasma they carry year round in store is the Sanyo 50 inch plasma for $698
