Re: Looking for a new TV, suggestions?

Hey Gamecock, thanks for all the help man. It looks like there is a lower price on Amazon now for the LG ($570 instead of $585).

The only differences b/w the two that I that you didn't mention was the contrast ratio. The LG is 50000:1 and the Samsung is 60000:1. Of course I have no idea what that means, so I'm hoping your genius will fill me in.

For that price I had to jump on it, I'm selling my RPTV to my freind, I switched the bulb in it last night and it looks new again, I can;t fit the RPTV in my room. Plus with two OB already replaced, it's ok. Not getting much for my set as these sets lose so much value.

That sucks to have replaced 2 bulbs already. Knock on wood, I'm still on bulb #1........I hope this lasts a few years.

not bulbs, the engine. It's called the Optical Block and it's the TV engine, A Sony tech had to come twice and to replace it do to a tint of Green.

Also I just put the new bulb in I had for over a year now, since my freind it taking it. Also first bulb never died just got very dull over time, with the new bulb, it's like night and day.

You'd have to see them in person. Contrast ratios are impossible to go by, b/c every company calculates it differently. There is no standard way of doing it that everybody has to go by. And most inflate the contrast numbers as a marketing ploy anyway.

This is best way of describing contrast ratios (better than I could have worded it)
                      -----------------
There are actually two types of contrast ratios and the difference lies in the definitions. Unfortunately not all salespeople and marketers of HDTV's bother to point out which type of contrast ratio is being reported. The first type of contrast ratio, the static contrast ratio, is the ratio of the brightest part of an LCD screen to the darkest part that can be simultaneously displayed on screen. The second type of contrast ratio, the dynamic contrast ratio, is measured by comparing the blackest black of one image to the whitest white of another image at a different time.

Didn't you have a warranty for those repairs?

Yeah Sony's extended warranty, it's known problem with this set and they had to extend the warranty, it's a manufacture issue.
