Re: Looking for a new TV, suggestions?
By the time of the Superbowl, new tv models will be rolling out. Manufacturers/retailers will be trying to get all of their 09 models sold to make room for the 2010 stuff.
So the price on the 09 models is going to go down. And they know that people who didn't get an HDTV on black friday will still be looking for a HDTV for the Superbowl.
I could be wrong, but I'm willing to bet the S1 (and most 09 models) will go down $100 for pre-Superbowl sales.Comment

Re: Looking for a new TV, suggestions?
I went to Sears ready to purchase the LG 50" Plasma but they had 3 LG Plasmas that were broken in-store on display so that seemed like an omen. I started looking at the Panasonic Plasmas which was $1099 but the warranty was outrageous ($400+ for 3 years)
I went to Best Buy and bought the same Panasonic 50" 1080P Plasma (link) - full warranty ($199 for 4 years) and came out a little over $1000...I'm pretty ecstatic.N.Y Mets

Re: Looking for a new TV, suggestions?
Samsung (and Sony) has a longer track record for making top quality LCDs. For most, Sony or Samsung are the only 2 options.
Out the box, the Samsung will probably have a better picture. Cnet's comparison between the 2 says that the LG has slightly better black levels.
The LG has a LOT more features and picture adjustments so if you want to do tweaks or look up picture settings you will get a picture just as good as the Samsung.
Reports say that the Sammy has better off-angle viewing but IMHO, that's a non-issue considering both are on a swivel stand and who doesn't sit in front of their tv?
In terms of inputs, they are the same except the Sammy has a S-video and the LG does not. Since you have a VGA input, there's no reason to ever use a S-video input anyway.
The LG has 2 other additional features worth noting. Clear voice allows the tv to make sure the voices are heard over background noise. I thought this was a gimmick but it actually works pretty good. Another is it has energy saving setting to instantly change the power consumption.
I'd check out both of them in a retail store before pulling the trigger. Keeping in mind you can do a lot more fine adjustments to the LG.
So it comes down to do you think the Sammy is $40 better than the LG?
Whichever way you go, be sure to check and see if you would save any money buy ordering online using the www.bing.com/cashback search engine
Good luck.Last edited by GAMEC0CK2002; 11-29-2009, 11:33 AM.Comment

Yes, considering I've had the same TV for the past 4 years while you've gone through a few (I believe?), I think the last thing you need is a new HDTV! Save some dough FF! You don't want to be working until you're 80 years old! Hell I don't plan on working a day after I'm 50!Comment

Re: Looking for a new TV, suggestions?
Buy a new bulb. I've replaced the bulb in my DLP before...very easy to do and only costs about $200 for a new bulb. I'll have this set for a long time...although I'll likely move it to the basement when my new house is finished being built and then will purchase something else for the family room.

Optical Block, The engine of the set. It was replaced twice already, it's a known problem with my Sony set.

Luckily haven't had any issues with my CRT-based RPTV. It's well over 300 lbs and has survived 2 moves. That was the one thing I wasn't worried about somebody stealing when my apt. was broken into.Comment

You got a great deal considering you snagged a 4 year extended warranty for $199
The guy at Sears was talking some nonsense about $270 for 2 years on my LG plasma.Comment
