Even though they're rebooting the franchise and going younger, I don't really see Sony letting anyone mess with the same formula.
Yeah, it was actually the highest grossing of the three (SM3-$890 million, SM2-$783 million, SM1-$821 million).

                Talk about a cash cow.

True, and great point-I started reading them in the early 60's and his wisecracking separated Spidey from Peter Parker as much as his powers. It was a dimension of him that was hugely entertaining.

At least that's the way I remember it. 90% of Spidey/Peter's witty banter occurred when Spidey was fighting the bad guys.

Yeah, hopefully the new movie(s) increases Spiderman's smartassery. One of the best thing about the comics/cartoon.

Sure, he may have been the villain in Spawn, but that's not stopping Martin Sheen from trying his hand again at a comic book movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Emmy-winning West Wing actor, 70, has been cast as Peter Parker's doomed Uncle Ben in the Spider-Man reboot. And if there's anyone besides Cliff Robertson we'd believe lecturing Peter about great power and great responsibility, it's the sanctimonious President Jed Bartlet.

Sony's Spidey reboot starts filming in December under the direction of Marc Webb. Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Rhys Ifans lead the cast.

UPDATED: The Hollywood Reporter has followed up their earlier scoop with another one, this time with the news that Oscar winner Sally Field (Forrest Gump, Brothers & Sisters) has been cast as Peter's beloved Aunt May. With the casting of Sheen and Field, it seems clear that the Spidey reboot is going the way of the Ultimate's younger, hipper Aunt May and Uncle Ben.

Sheen and Field as his Aunt and Uncle definitely, at least, give some credability to the roles.

I'm just curious how they do a prequel (it is a prequel isn't it?) to the first Spider-man when they showed him getting bitten by the spider and becoming Spider-man in that movie. Are we just supposed to forget the other 3 and this is a totally separate movie?

Yes you are, these movies have nothing to do with the other one's.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

                                More news...

Hot on the sticky heels of yesterday's Uncle Ben and Aunt May casting news comes word that Mary Jane Watson -- longtime love interest of Peter Parker – will not be in the Spider-Man reboot at all.

According to The Wrap "an individual familiar with the project has told The Wrap that Mary Jane Watson will not appear in the film after all, as the character is not currently featured in James Vanderbilt's screenplay, and apparently never was."

We'd previously heard that both MJ (played, of course, by Kirsten Dunst in the Sam Raimi trilogy of Spidey films) and Peter's other famous girlfriend, Gwen Stacy, would be in the new movie. Emma Stone has since been cast as Stacy.

"Evidently, there had been some discussions about Emma Stone playing red-haired MJ, but once she was cast as Gwen Stacy, the filmmakers decided to trust their instincts and stick with one love interest," adds the site.

So they're going with their original script and not rewriting on the fly? What a novel idea.

Production begins on the film in December.
I guess it'll be a little strange to have a Spider-Man movie without Mary Jane, but if they plan on making this a trilogy (or more) then this makes sense.
