Does anyone remember Marc Forster, director of movies such as Finding Neverland, was signed on to do the Quantum of Solace sequel? IMO he was not the right choice, especially after seeing how Paul Greengrass can do that style much better and after seeing how good Martin Campbell was for Casino Royale.

I just hope that Webb, a guy with no history in blockbuster action movies, can do better than Forster did with the Bond franchise.

Enough speculation already. Andrew Garfield has been officially cast as the new Spider-Man in Sony's upcoming 3D reboot, due to hit screens on July 3, 2012. The studio released the news via a press release.

The new film will begin production in early December, directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt. Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad will produce.

Garfield (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus) is one of a few names that have been thrown around to take over the role. The list previously included Josh Hutcherson, Jamie Bell (Jumper), Anton Yelchin (Star Trek), Aaron Johnson (Kick-***), Alden Ehrenreich (Tetro) and Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson). But they can stop practicing their web slinging, as Garfield has beaten them all out.

Webb explained his reasoning for choosing Garfield in a statement: "Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor's work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker."

Arad added, "I'm incredibly excited about Andrew Garfield. In the Spider-Man tradition, we were looking for a smart, sensitive and cool new Peter Parker who can inspire us and make us laugh, cry and cheer. We believe we have found the perfect choice to take on this role and lead us into the future."

Ziskin also chimed in, "We are thrilled to have Andrew Garfield for this new incarnation of Spider-Man under Marc Webb's direction. We were fortunate enough to meet with a group of fantastically talented young men. In the end, we all agreed that in addition to being an extraordinary actor, Andrew had the right mix of humor, youth and pathos, along with an underlying sense of strength and power necessary to bring Peter Parker and Spider-Man to life on screen."

If you haven't seen Garfield in anything, that's likely to change by the end of this year. He most recently worked with director David Fincher on The Social Network and starred for Spike Jonze in his robot love story I'm Here, which premiered at Sundance. He also plays the lead male opposite Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan in Mark Romanek's Never Let Me Go, due for release later this year.

The selection of Garfield was revealed at a press event in Cancun, Mexico for international journalists attending a media tour promoting upcoming Sony films.

That's a bad time for them to release the movie. Only two weeks before Batman 3? Tsk tsk.

That guy looks like Bug Hall. A decent choice, I suppose. At least it's not some heartthrob that the tweens are all over right now.

The look is there in that he kind of looks like Peter Parker, and I like how they said they were looking for someone with wit and humor because that was really missing in the last 3 movies.

I'm interested to see the first pics of him with the suit on (pause) and also what kind of tweaks they make to the suit since I'm guessing they're not just going to keep the same one from the original movies.

BTW, this is seriously coming out 2 weeks before Batman 3? Nerdgasm alert, nerdgasm alert!!

I don't know much about Garfield. He should prove to be a good choice. Logan Lerman would have been interesting.

I'm sure people can afford to see both.

I, like most people, don't know anything about the actor chosen but I'm happy they're taking the franchise back to high school. It's really the only way to go.

I'm looking forward to this. I was a fan of 500 Days of Summer, so I expect great things from Marc Webb. I don't know who this Garfield guy is but I already like him as Peter Parker more than Tobey Maguire. Never liked the Raimi movies. Never liked the casting for any of the actors (except for Bryce Dallas Howard... yum).

I have high hopes for this one.

The thing I never understood about these movies is since they're all based on comic books, why not go with stylized settings, cinematic quality, etc as if they were ripped from the comics, especially since they all rely far too heavily on CGI. I really can't explain how I see it in my mind but think of the art direction found in movies like SinCity, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, etc. They should think art & story first with the CGI and technology as the means to make it work.

I think a big part of the approach to most superhero movies is taking the fantastic and making it seem plausible. Instead of giving us a comic book onscreen the directors choose to show us what these heroes would be like if they existed in our world. Though I do agree to an extent with you that it would be fun to see a more "stylized" approach at times, depending on the source material. Sin City is obviously the perfect example of that approach being applied and working extremely well.

Ang Lee tried to make a comic book as film with his Incredible Hulk movie. It was a total failure on all levels.

Because they don't have to do any of that. Spiderman is a huge and successful mainstream franchise, and even though seemingly everyone says they hated the last one, it still made like 900 million dollars worldwide.

Even though they're rebooting the franchise and going younger, I don't really see Sony letting anyone mess with the same formula.
