Hi folks. I just got one of these yesterday and I have a question. I'm an academic, so the lion's share of my work is in word processing. I need a program that will let me type, add footnotes and citations, and be compatible with Word if at all possible.

Can you guys make a recommendation or two on the better iPad word processing apps? Thanks in advance!

Thank you sir. I've been reading reviews and some say that Pages doesn't offer the footnoting and sourcing functions that the full laptop/desktop version does, but it's hard to tell who's correct when writing reviews.

I've heard good things about the other two, and they're all relatively inexpensive, but I'm hesitant to buy three word processing apps if it's not absolutely necessary.

Would you recommend one over the others, given my needs to write a dissertation and scholarly articles/books on the go? Word and PDFs are really the major things I use, and I know Pages and Word are compatible, but beyond that my knowledge is extremely limited.

That's tough - I don't have to write such things so I wouldn't be able to tell ya bro - sorry! Personally I do most of my writing either in the Notes app or using Penultimate (by hand) and transcribe everything later.

With the new iPad, I keep forgetting about dictation. It's pretty damn phenomenal when I use it though.

You can get them refurbished from Apple for $350. Just Google "refurb iPad."

I have another word processing question: I've found a really good review on Quick Office that says it supports Word 2003 and 2007. I run 2008 on my Macbook, and I want to make sure that if I create a document in Quick Office's Word feature that I can use it on my Macbook.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Troj, I'll ask my wife about this when she gets back from her run, as she uses her iPad2 quite a bit for creating lesson plans.

Did you buy a keyboard? I picked her up one that's bluetooth activated and it works like a charm. The typing on the screen doesn't work that well if you are trying to put together a sizeable document ... at least from my experience.

I have Office 2011 on my Macbook and Quickoffice works well for it.

The other place you may want to look at is OnCloud. Haven't played much with it, but supposedly runs a full version of Office through the clouds. I checked it with some conditionally formatted Excel files I had, and the formatting stuck...which didn't happen with Quickoffice.

This was actually my next question. I want a cover with a keyboard and was wondering if anyone could make recommendations. I picked up a Kensington one yesterday, but it's a bit flimsy, the pitch isn't as deep as I'd like, and it's generally a little chintzy for the price.

Any thoughts on that?

To my surprise, my wife said she wanted her own iPad. I just ordered a pair of refurb iPad 2s from Apple.com. Looking forward to finally joining the tablet world.
