Man, lemme tell you, I was a HUGE skeptic before I had one because it looked like a stupidly large iPhone. Once I got mine up and running I was blown away. It's a truly ingenious piece of technology. For my purposes, it's basically a really intuitive, highly portable, touch-screen computer with the capacity for FaceTime and other iPhone apps.

Just for the purposes of my work this thing can do the following list of tasks that I can't do as easily on my Macbook:
-take hand written notes and integrate images, voice, and text seamlessly, while ordering notes by subject.
-read and annotate PDF files downloaded to my iPad
-scan anything, annotate and save it
-read all my books from Kindle, iBooks, and other electronic-based book providers
-reduce the size of my workstation from an encyclopedia-sized machine to that of a large notecard (some of the keyboards for it are pretty good).

Plus I get a bunch of touch-screen functionality which is more intuitive by default, and a bunch of games.

Perhaps my favorite thing of all is the battery life. I can do business or leisure on the iPad over the course of several days of consistent use before my battery runs out, whereas my Macbook is dead in 4 hours or less.

Let us know how you like it man! I pulled one of my students who is an evangelist for this thing over after class and had him walk me through the academically oriented stuff you can do with it. I'd suggest having a friend give you the run down if you're anything like me, 'cause I had no idea about the raw power the iPad has and the scope of things you can do with it.

I feel old just saying that--I didn't use email 'till my 20s

I thought the same when it first came on the scene. Seemed like a cool device, but was a luxury item that I didn't need. Fast forward to today, and I am giddy with anticipation. I've been all over iPad forums. I've been looking up apps on the itunes site. I've got two iPad cases sitting in my Amazon cart, ready to be ordered. I'm glad that my wife wanted one for herself so I won't have to share.

ZAGG keyboard case is super duper awesome. I foresee my production on this thing going up emenecly.
I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

              Re: The Apple iPad

I just picked up the Adonit case with keyboard and I really like its functionality. It's got an easy snap-in/out interface with the iPad itself, and the keyboard is set up exactly like the ones on the MacBook's with individual, springy keys. Some other keyboards are covered by a uniform plastic overlay that's awkward to use and is a bit cramped.

The magnetic underside of the Adonit case also makes the setup for typing really firm. One you slide the iPad onto the outer edge of the bottom lip of the case the magnetic function locks it in pretty tight. I don't worry about the pad slipping out of place at all.

For those of you who work on the go and want to have real-time synching of files between your laptop, desktop, and iPad, check out Sugarsynch. I use it to get real-time synching between my iPad and MacBook. It's pretty amazing and much less clunky than Apple's current iCloud service. You don't have to do anything to make it work except open a document from one of your linked devices and make whatever changes you want. As you're doing that, those changes are automatically being made to the documents on your other devices, and once you're done and close out, everything's uniform. Pretty sweet, at least for what I do with the device.

I posted this in the iPhone thread, but figured I'd post it here as well. I think it looks amazing on the new iPad.

If anyone with an iOS device has $0.99 and is looking for a fun puzzle/memory game, my game was just released yesterday.

The name of the game is "Pathway Game" and it works on iOS 4.2 and above. So anyone with an iPhone here should check it out and let me know what they think. Support an OS, iOS developer's work. Lol

Btw, I did run this by Steve to make sure it was ok and he was cool with it.

Picked up our ipad 2s from apple store today. My wife and I are really enjoying them. There's so much you can do on these things, I don't know where to begin. I'm so glad I saw that post about the refurbished models. Great value!

Any idea when iPad 3's will be readily available?

I figured being a couple months past release date they'd be in stock most places, was looking to buy one tonight (been thinking about it for a while but finally decided to pull the trigger) and they don't seem to really be in stock anywhere.

Would prefer to get it at Best Buy (have around $250 in gift cards there) but every model appears to be sold out at every Best Buy that is even remotely close to me.

Best Buy gets them every week. Best to check Sunday Morning and Thursday Morning. They usually get large stock shipments on Saturday night and Wednesday night, although, they do get smaller shipments throughout the week.

Actually, I'd call the stores and find out when their truck nights are. Just because they're in the same area, it doesn't mean they come on the same night. Between my old store, and the two stores 15 minutes to our east and west, we all had different truck nights. Stores usually get two trucks a week, although I know some of the smaller stores have been slimmed down to one. Things like iPads though aren't always shipped through truck because of how long it can take. High demand items are dropped shipped, meaning they're sent through UPS or Fedex occasionally instead of the truck. Most stores get shipments from major carriers twice a day. Things like iPads and iPhones are hard to guess because they may get all of theirs through drop shipments, or they could all come on the truck. It's often a crapshoot.

That's really odd, because my best buys have always had plenty of them. Guessing maybe there's a regional shortage?

You could always just buy from best buy and have them ship it to you.
