It's hard for the first episode of any show to be incredible. Just because they have to introduce characters, build story-lines, etc. Some that you get sucked in and develop a feel for what's going on. I'd definitely give it 4-5 episodes before making any decisions. Although, I'm already sold.

Yeah, the only pilots I remember being particularly great first time views were Lost and The Shield (maybe 24 too).

I see Boardwalk as more of a The Wire type show where the Pilot is a standard episode and the events of the Pilot will be used throughout the rest of the show and less of a "meet Jimmy and Nucky and watch their antics" that most Pilots are. The Wire's first episode is almost unintelligible the first time you watch it.

yeah, if I remember correctly, The Wire didn't really pick up until the 3rd episode or so just because it just took that long for all the pieces to really fall into place, and for everything to fully make sense. I assume this will be similar.

Great scene with Nucky telling Eddie not to underestimate him, and that he could have him killed. Eddie acknowledges that he has the power, but wouldn't do it. Then the half gangster remark.

The boat beat down was pretty violent stuff. The wife beater/baby killer deserved the brass knuckles.

Loved the first episode. It set some things up and delivered a lot of great scenes.
Pitt's the more writable role. You can do more with his character than Nucky. He's the guy who gets to go on heists with Al Capone, not Nucky. There's only so much you can do with the lead character, because the lead character has to fit a certain prototype. The role Pitt has, he's the wild card. He can go a ton of different ways, and be perceived a ton of different ways.

Although this is coming from certain Sopranos talents, and they pretty much reinvented the lead of a show with Tony Soprano, as that was one of the deepest characters in history.

I really enjoyed the first episode even though a few times it felt like it was dragging along. My DVR is going to blow-up on Sunday nights with several shows airing around the 7-9 pm time frame.

It did feel a bit like it was dragging on. That's the blessing/curse of HBO shows. No commercials means no breaks to take it all in and re-settle.

After a total of 1 episode and 4.8 million viewers, HBO picks up Boardwalk Empire for a second season.

Awesome news. IMO, that is one of the great things about a show on a premium cable network. They don't have to worry about rushing the action. They can develop characters, build story lines, etc (similar to what The Sopranos did) without worrying about getting the ax.

Saw ep#1 last night on On-Demand.

My wife was sitting next to me while I was watching it, but doing work on her laptop...

                  Her: What is that.
                  Me: Boardwalk Empire.
                  Her: Boardwalk what....?
Me: A new HBO show about Prohibition and gangsters.
Her: No response....(No interest at this point).

However as soon as that scene appeared where that chick was riding Buscemi her attention went through the roof

We watched that scene with my fiancee's father, since we were visiting him for the weekend. The fact that the chick's name was Lucy and my fiancee's name was Lucy, made things super awkward for some reason LOL.

Throwing Jimmy's money down right in front of him was so badass. As was that phone conversation with Rothstein. Nucky is turning into quite the awesome character.

That phone conversation with Rothstein was the only real interesting part of the episode. Otherwise, it kinda lost me.

Liked the episode, particularly the phone call and Capone's antics (head breaking and pretending not to hear Jimmy over the phone), but don't know where they are going with the wife of the now dead wife-beater.

The prohibition agent is pretty boring.

I enjoyed last night's episode as well, although not as much as the pilot. The subtle humor in this show is awesome and the wardrobe and sets are still amazing.

I fully expect slow episodes like this second one so it doesn't bother me much when nothing huge or exciting really happens, because the writing was still top notch last night and the actors continue to play their roles and grow into their characters.

I figure once Michael K. William's character gets introduced and things really start happening, this show will skyrocket.

I figured that the 2nd episode and the next couple of episodes will probably be a little slow. They try and throw a lot of stuff at you in the first episode to peak your interest, and then from there they'll slowly build the story arch.

I still enjoyed the episode, but it was obviously a lot slower than the first.
