That's the first I've heard of Star Trek fans hating it, everyone I've seen loved it. And yes, Star Trek was dying. The newest show was canceled pretty quick and the most recent movie wasn't that good.

In Star Trek's case it was more about "reconnecting" with a younger audience. Purists had to have an open-mind b/c nothing other than a reboot would bring Star Trek back to the silver screen.

I consider myself a purist, but also a realist. Wasn't a huge fan of the Spock-Uhura storyline but it wasn't a deal breaker for me. Thoroughly enjoyed the movie.

Notice I said Star Trek purists, people who identify themselves as "Trekkies." Most of them didn't like the movie. The film itself was even primarily marketed to people who weren't fans of the series to begin with.

Those are the people I'm talking about. I'm sure there's a Star Trek forum some where with people who hated it but those people are the minority.

I wouldn't call Star Trek a dying franchise either.

            It was a dead franchise.

            Trekkies are absolutely irrelevant.

The chances that they won't see a new Star Trek movie is roughly somewhere between 0% and 0%.

Here are the millions of dollars made by the last 5 Star Trek movies:

            Generations: 118
            First Contact: 146
            Insurrection: 112
            Nemesis: 67
            Star Trek: 385

For the first time in decades people who live outside of their mother's basement care about Star Trek. For maybe the first time ever, attractive people care about Star Trek.

A couple of losers on the internet are just mad that their little secret is now liked by normal human beings.

From time to time I thoroughly read the UGO Star Trek forum and trust me there are a TON of trekkies there. Some hated the new movie, some were realistic with it and others came up with rationalizations for the stuff they didn't like (Basically saying this is an alternate reality to the Original Trek which actually makes a lot of sense if you really look at it)

I happen to be somewhere in the middle in the fandom. I love a lot of things Trek but The Powers That Be made horrible missteps with VOY (though I loved that show) and ENT (which was just an abomination) while the movies at the time was getting dumber and so far away from the original premise of Star Trek that of COURSE people were gonna turn away from it. I mean c'mon, Captain Picard, action hero?!

              Give me a break.

I seen the Karate Kid remake commercial last night with Will Smith son. Same story line and everything. I never did watch the Halloween remakes, the 90210 reboot, Melrose Place reboot or any of the other reboots. They all seemed lame to me.

I kinda liked the Rob Zombie Halloween movies, personally. I seem to be in the minority on that one. Also, I think the Hulk reboot worked out because the first movie was awful, and the second one was mediocre (which is better than awful.)

I agree with you on this one.

Chevy Chase made those movies, I don't see how they could be re-done successfully without him...

As for people arguing about rebooting Spider-Man and Fantastic Four, remember that they are making a "Marvel universe" with all of these new movies, which is probably the biggest reason they're getting new movies in there.

Well officially, Star Trek did split off into a new time line. The original time line that we all know from the previous series and movies is still around after the split. Romulus is even acknowledged as being destroyed as told in the new movie.

Official stuff like Star Trek Online will continue the story of the original time line, while movies will obviously take place in the new one. It's a convenient way of freshening up the franchise for a new audience, without completely ignoring the fans that were around for everything prior to it.
