Makes it that much easier to pass up on some of the crap Hollywood puts out. I used to go to the movies almost every other weekend. My wife and I loved catching opening night. Now, unless it's something we are dying to see, we just skip it, wait for it to hit DVD/Blu-Ray and get it shipped our way via NetFlix. Why spend upwards of $30 bucks on a 2 hour movie that may or may not suck?

Makes little differnce to me. I'd rather wait a few months and watch in the comfort of my own home on my 52' TV on Bluray. Better picture, better sound and I always get the best possible seating on my couch. Unless I get the perfect seating location in a movie theater, which is rare for any popular movie the 1st couple of weeks (unless you show up 30 minutes early), then I don't find it any advantage of a theater over my home. I also have the disadvantage of always seem to be going with people to movies that always want to sit in the last few rows because they don't like it too close. What's the point of watching on the big screen if you're in the 2nd last row. The screen looks kinda small from there.

I find 3D quite annoying and lose nothing there and can't wait for this latest 3D craze to pass.(and yes it is a fad just like it was every other time, never understood how the latest 3D movies are any different from past 3D movies except the glasses are better constructed and slightly more comfortable)

The prices are already ridiculous to begin with, looks like I won't be in a theatre for years to come.

Exactly, the prices for seeing a movie at the theater are generally out of whack.
This only opens door for 'alternative access' to current movies a little wider.

I bet studios would get more money if they could work out a way to make the movies available via a Pay Per View type system at home. I'd gladly shell out 10-15 bucks to sit at home and watch a new release on my TV and sound system as opposed to fighting crowds.

Edit: That being said, some movies are fun to see with crowds or in theaters, but I would prefer that choice.

In this economy, people arent just spending willy nilly anymore. Folks are picking and choosing what they want to spend their money on, and doing this is just a disaster on top of an industry that has just run out of ideas in the first place.

Guess that consession food will go to waste as well.

It stuns me so many people are willing to pay the prices now, even before any hike.

I've seen 2 movies in theatre over the past year. One being Avatar, which I didn't really care if I saw or not but I figured I might as well get the full 3-D movie experience with it.

That really hasn't been true at all.

2009 saw the most money being at the box office ever.

Also keep in mind that article was written before Avatar came out and only a week or two after New Moon came out.

I guess the studios want to see more piracy eh?

I have a feeling that in a few years we'll have even LESS choice of what to see in the theatres as making movies will become a bad business decision for independent or midsized movie studios/production companeis because you won't be able to break even.

**** 'em all. I can buy the movie on Blu-ray for only a few dollars more and have a better experience, and I'd be able to watch it multiple times, and I don't have to pay out of the nose for a water and some popcorn or whatever. I don't care about the 3D "experience" that much.

Was the world in B&W back then too?

J/K but it just shows how much inflation over the years has made that seem like a million years ago.

You might as well just skip the movie and buy it on Bluray for the same price and get to watch it over again.

Anybody that thinks this will slow people down from spending their money on a movie is crazy... People will still go to the movies and they will pay the bloated prices for the movie and the snacks / food. They just opened a Cinebistro in our neighborhood...the food is ridiculously expensive - but guess what? People shell out the dough for it.

General rule of thumb: NOTHING gets cheaper in this world...
