I'm not sure what part of The Karate Kid falls into the "Great" category, exactly, nor am I sure how such a movie fits along side truly great movies as posted above.

It's an average movie when it boils down to it. There isn't really anything about it that makes it great. Like I've said before - it's average all the way around. It does not have great acting. It does not have a great story. It does not have great writing. It does not have great cinematography.

It had good casting, it had a relatable/fun (albiet entirely generic and transparent) story and it just had some good chemistry. It was a fun movie to watch - and it sits in with a bazillion other movies. Great movies do great things. They have great acting, great stories, great characters, great directing, great cinematography, etc. They may not have all of those things, very few do, but they have a few of them at the least. The Karate Kid doesn't sit in the Great category for ANY of those things. Thus, I fail to see how it's great.
no no no,...this is the first post where you're actually bringing up ANYTHING and posting some of your own thoughts on the matter. yeah I'm bringing opinions to the table, but who isn't? ...and on top of that my opinions are influenced by being a film nut, a university film student and a film maker - so when I'm backing up my thoughts with points, these are things I've spent quite a while thinking about and have been recognized by my peers and teachers on the subject.

What we 'like' is subjective - absolutely. But I'm talking about great films as leaving a mark on film-making.

you're saying it doesn't have a great story? you're saying it doesn't have great writing? ... what do you know about screenwriting? It is absolutely a great story, and was original (at least for the time) with unique relationships etc. if it's "not good" what is good? It was great the way the characters were introduced and the story progressed, it was heart-warming story and all the other things I mentioned in my original post which you said something like
"I'm not even responding to the rest of your post because it's silly"
I've written scripts - have you? have you read kk's script? have you done any acting or directing or editing or lighting? do you know what a cinematographer does?

when you tell someone their whole post on a subject they study and work in is silly and leave it at that, you lose the ability to be taken seriously. This si a discussion forum, I've seen you make intelligent points in mma, but what you did in this thread was garbage. If you're not willing to engage someone who is making points and taking the time to make thoughtful posts - keep your mouth shut.

If KK was like a "bazillion" other movies, it wouldn't be a classic - would it?

    you:

"Like I've said before - it's average all the way around. It does not have great acting. It does not have a great story. It does not have great writing. It does not have great cinematography"

it does have very good to great all of those and I have the knowledge to point out why - The cinematography is great. The way they shoot night-time scenes is really impressive imo, the use of shadow and light. They lenses they chose in key scenes was smart. There are great uses of focus in the movie as well.
the shot selection was great as was the editing too.
Ralph M's acting was very good too. His emotional range throughout was compelling and "real" as in he was "present" in all his important scenes as an actor - Myiagi was quite a memorable character too, very well done.

there are lost of other things too. The story itself is hardly "weak" I pointed out all the elements it has it it earlier (but those apparently were silly)

    KK was an important film.

      Re: Independence Day Sequels

AllBThere, I'm with you about the KK films. Of course I'm old enough to remember them in the context of when they came out. I personally felt that KK2 was better than KK. But the original, with it's exploration of the displaced kid who overcomes the bullies by learning from the tortured Mr Miyagi, is classic. And then the cultural lessons and the whole intercultural/interracial themes in the second movie, made them both better than most of the 80's fare. Ralph M. was a huge star then, and I remember people lined up around the block when KK2 opened. I agree about them being important.

Back to the hate on my Roland E. movies! Ya'll are lame! LOL! He isn't trying to write plausible scripts that delve too deep. The action is the star! And forces like the weather or the sun win! People are just riders in the action. Now, in ID4, we get to fight back. But not until a whole lotta folks get toasted. Day After Tomorrow and 2012, not so much. I find it amusing, people who review these movies on Netflix seem to have a problem with this. Not the poorly written scripts, or lack of character development, but how he kills so many people in such spectacular fashion without regard for them. And? That's what the movies all say, man is small and nature is larger then him. He's just along for the ride. And he'd better be careful or he'll be snuffed out. I don't have a problem with his vision. And really like how he has us get snuffed out. LA in 2012 was the best yet. Yellowstone was pretty darn good, too! But, I have to admit that "Knowing" was the best I've seen yet. Whole Earth gets fried!

My point is, enjoy it. Every movie doesn't have to be a "Million Dollar Baby," "Shawshank" or "Boyz in the Hood." Sometimes it's just fun to blow stuff up! Anyone who can't just enjoy the movies as special-effects heavy spectacles with man as the secondary party, really needs to "lighten up, Francis." The use of loose science to serve to drive the scenario is done on purpose. The characters are meant to be shallow, the disaster is the star...
