As far as the idiot on the roof I think...

He wont be there when they go back. He finds some way of reaching the hacksaw when the tool belt/box was knocked over. I also believe he either kills one of the group ambush style or at least does some major damage.

I agree with you Sky, they focused on the toolbox dropping for a reason. You are likely right, when they go back to get him (because the door was chained shut) he is going to be waiting and something bad is going to happen.
